e all know Mark Elf and his phenomenal suc- cess at working his own music to jazz radio. In Wrecent years he’s picked up a few clients to help make ends meet, always working those projects with the same assiduousness as his own. JazzWeek caught up with the guitarist on a working vacation in Hawaii, where he did a few packed gigs with some local musi- cians and enjoyed a few days of R&R. As it rained out- side in New Jersey, Elf took a few minutes on a sunny day in paradise to chat before heading out to look at a pineapple plantation. – Tad Hendrickson

JazzWeek: What’s it like to play a gig in Hawaii? Mark Elf: I came to do two gigs that were actually set up by [DJ] Don Gordon at KIPO. I played at the Musician’s Union here and a place called the Honolulu Club. The shows were sold out and the people were absolutely delighted to have jazz artists here because there isn’t too many outside coming here. So when someone does come, it’s a really big deal. The room was quiet; they were receptive to the music; and people lined up to buy CDs after the show. I’ll tell you, it really made me feel good. It really doesn’t get any better than that. I want to come back. I’ll bet you do. Did you bring a band? No. There are some really good players on this island [Oahu]. I gave them my book and they just read it through. I can’t remember everyone’s name right now because I had different guys each night, but the quality of the musician- ship was very high. Any problems from your clients for taking this jaunt? continued ... jazzweek.com • Oct. 26, 2005 JazzWeek 9 Artist/Industry Q&A: Mark Elf (continued)

While I’m here, I’ve been making phone calls to as many music directors as I could and all the records moved up this week, so that was great. I have my cell phone and my laptop and that’s all I need. Because I don’t want to let the mu- sicians down. It’s not just that they are paying me to do a task; it’s the fact that I know the feeling of wanting to get airplay and knowing that my music is getting played nation- ally. I want to make sure they get the same feeling that I get. How do you balance out the art and commerce thing? Some musicians do a lot of teaching to balance it out; some musicians have a university gig or pri- vately, or even have other businesses to make the ends meet. I fell into this because of the success of my own records. We all do what we have to do to survive, and I’m able to take my laptop and cell on the road with me and conduct business. Four of my records went to number one when I was on the road and didn’t have a cell phone. I was making calls from phone booths and airports. And from gigs – one time, I called three stations during a break in the set. My record was at number two at that point and I actually think that those phone calls were important for getting it to number one. The truth of the matter is that I like everybody I talk to too. Some of these people I’ve known for 10 years, so it’s not like a real chore. Mark Elf’s most recent album, Glad To Be Back, celebrated his recovery from two serious illnesses. He’ll record his next album next month with the Is there a fear that you are sacrificing one for the same musicians, David Hazeltine, Peter Washington, and Lewis Nash. other? Let me put it this way: I have enough time to practice and write music. The radio promotion does not take all my time, as a matter of fact it’s about the same amount as I would have to devote to a class- room if I was teaching at a university. I have a really busy day on Wednesday where I may not have time to play, but the rest of the week I find an hour or two to practice. I’ve just learned to balance the two so that one doesn’t over- power the other. If I don’t write the tune today because I was on the phone, I just write it tomorrow. That’s a good attitude to have. Not only that, this extra money allows me to turn down gigs I don’t want to take because I’ll be disrespected by the club, or go play for money that’s shame- ful. When you are totally reliant on gigs to make money, sometimes you have continued ... jazzweek.com • Oct. 26, 2005 JazzWeek 10 Artist/Industry Q&A: Mark Elf (continued)

to eat a lot of crow and at this point in my life I don’t want to do that. I want to eat pheasant under glass. Where do you find your clients? Word has spread through the industry. I don’t advertise. I don’t call people up unless someone has recommend- ed me to them and given me a number to get in touch. Sometimes those people will call me before I call them. A recent example was Bobby Jackson telling Bill Ran- some about me and I worked that record. Mostly it’s mu- sicians telling other musicians about what I did with their record. Do you turn business away? I turn away more records than I take. When I do take a record I try and be honest. I did a David Berger record, and he’s a beautiful writer right out of Duke Ellington. And he did this record of three suites where the mu- sic flowed from one suite to the next. It was a great re- Ed Trefzger cord, but not a good one for radio. I told him that, but he wanted me to do it anyway and I did. It barely cracked the Top 50. But he recommended me to Joan Stiles who I took to the top 10. The bottom line is that it’s word of mouth. Do you limit yourself to the number of records you work at one? I usually won’t do more than five or six. I’m doing five right now. I also don’t do the same instrumentalists at the same time. For instance, I’ve got two vibraphone players – Joe Locke and Mark Sherman – but Mark Sherman is getting close to done and Joe Locke’s album is just start- ing. I try to avoid working with two artists that are com- Dr. Jazz/drjazz.com peting with each other. It’s just not fair.
