Dogpile.com Unleashes Ten Top 10 Lists of Search Terms During the First Year of the "Tens"

"It's Me or the Dog" - users increase self-searches and fetches about dogs, diversions, and disasters in 2010

BELLEVUE, Wash., Dec 02, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) --

Dogpile (www.Dogpile.com), a owned by InfoSpace, Inc. (NASDAQ:INSP) that combines results from all leading search engines including Bing, , and Yahoo!, today revealed its annual list of favorite "fetches," or searches. With the start of the new decade, informally referred to as "the tens," Dogpile unleashed Ten Top 10 lists of its most popular search terms of the year for 2010.

Working Dogs Take 2010 Best in Show

From recalls to rescue efforts, the tens began with a large number of unfortunate natural disasters, such as the Haiti earthquake and an enormous, unforgivable man-made one with the BP oil spill. Dogs, which are favorites among Dogpile.com users, as the site's mascot Arfie can attest to, were a major part of both sorts of devastation. A record number of Gulf Coast dogs and other animals were in need of rescue due to the BP oil spill, while in Haiti, specially trained dogs did search and rescue for surviving earthquake victims. After what could've been another disaster with the Times Square bomb scare in New York last October, "vapor wake dogs" were introduced as a new type of working canine to help deter terrorist attacks. These dog "tricks" or canine capabilities catapulted disaster dogs of all breeds to win Best in Show as top dogs of the year.

The Big Dogs Learn New Tricks

Internet users continued to use Dogpile for quick starts to their favorite website services, like YouTube, MapQuest, and Facebook, which, for the second year in a row, took the number one spot as the most popular search term on the site. Surprisingly, Twitter didn't make it to the top 10 list this year. Searches for social networking services again increased dramatically for both business and personal use, and as a result, more Internet users are tuned in to their individual online activity.

"Dogpile.com users are more frequently searching their own name on our , supporting a Pew Internet Research Study released earlier this year indicating that Internet users are increasingly monitoring their personal information online," said Mike Glover, general manager of search at InfoSpace. "In addition to looking up resources and interests, individuals are using Dogpile.com to self-search their digital footprint to seek information others can find about them as well."

"It's Me or The Dog"

In rhythm with the self-interests that many Internet searchers had in mind this year, reality TV shows like Animal Planet's TV program, "It's Me or The Dog," continued to rank highly among searches in 2010. The popular and sometimes controversial reality show, "Dancing with the Stars," beat "American Idol" for the first time this year in a competition of entertainment searches.

Self-searches weren't the only names that Dogpile users sniffed out. Throughout 2010, Dogpile.com users often searched for celebrities of the moment, actors who passed away, and star athletes. Throughout the year, Internet users continued to search on Dogpile.com as a resource to get tips from Arfie and other characters on a variety of topics. The final top 10 list for 2010, however, may be kept away from Arfie's favorite dogfriend, Zoe, who might notice that fetches for Mother's Day gifts beat out searches for Valentine's Day gift ideas.

Following are the 10 top 10 lists of popular searches on Dogpile in 2010. For more information on Dogpile.com's favorite fetches, visit Arfie at www.Dogpile.com.
