Hiking, gazing, staring in awe: Gorges and slot-canyons reveal fantastic perspectives that you won’t soon forget.

Idyllic Almbachklamm near Marktschellenberg with its impressive waterfalls is one of the most beautiful gorges in Bavaria. At the entrance of the Almbachklamm gorge you’ll find the oldestmarble ball mill in Germany. Ever since 1683 marble rocks have been ground down and polished into gleaming marble balls!

Almbachklamm Gorge, Marktschellenberg Everywhere in the Berchtesga- dener Land mills and dams can be seen, such as Röthelbach- klause near Bad Reichenhall – one of the very oldest dams – or the Theresienklause above Almbachklamm gorge. These historical monuments show us the industry and technology of earlier times. Garnering the power of water enabled settlers to mine salt, grind grain by means of millstones, as well as generating power or logging in areas too hard to reach without the trans- port of water. Many mills and dams are now being lovingly restored by various organiza- tions and honorary volunteers.
