The Cardinal squad beat UCLA, 8-5, December 2 in front of a home crowd to give its 25-year head coach a tie for the most NCAA titles by any coach. Dettamanti, who ends his collegiate coaching career with 666-208-6 record, tied California’s Pete Cutino with eight NCAA championships in a career. Stanford had won its most recent title in 1994 and had lost two title games since. Stanford defeated UCLA, 8-5, behind two goals by Tony Azevedo and eight saves by Nick Ellis. The Bruins finished the year at 21-4 while the Trojans dropped to 27-4. Seniors Alex Roelse and Matt Farmer led the Bruins with a game-high two goals each. Redshirt sophomore Alex Wolf played the entire game in the cage for UCLA, registering 10 saves while allowing just five goals, two on Trojan power plays. Matteo Morelli scored the first goal of the game for Southern California on a power play at the 6:42 mark. Marin Dasic made it 2-0 with a goal from the front court (1:51). Freshman Quinten Osborne got the Bruins on the board with a goal at two meters (1:33) to trim the Trojans’ lead to 2-1. Zach D’Sa scored on a cross-cage shot to open the scoring in the second period (4:37), giving the Trojans a 3-1 advantage. But Roelse scored from the front court with 21 seconds left to cut the lead to 3-2 at the break. Farmer tied things up at 3-3 (3:33) off a nice feed from Roelse into two meters. But James Walters answered immediately with a goal (3:05) to put Southern California up 4-3. Senior Max Irving then scored from the front court after an ordinary foul (1:56) to tie the game at 4-4.

    CALIFORNIA Golden Bears 2005 SEASON IN REVIEW John Mann was the Bears’ leading scorer in 2005, tallying 56 goals and earning first-team All-America, first- team All-MPSF and MPSF All- Tournament honors. Marshall was the winner of the Golden Bear Coaches Award, and Sharf and junior Brian Bacharach were the recipients of the Academic Achievement Award. Tyrrell and Monsees received the Peter J. Cutino Water Polo Trophy as the team’s most improved players. Monsees finished the 2005 campaign with 16 goals in 27 matches, and Tyrrell tallied 11 goals in 27 contests, including two goals in the Bears’ 9-7 victory over UC Irvine in the MPSF third- place match. Marshall is the third-ever recipient of the Golden Bear Coaches’ Award after competing in six matches last fall, notching goals against Santa Clara and UC Santa Cruz.
