Advice Column

I don't remember the last time I hung out with my mom without fighting with her. I really hate fighting with her all the time, but I don't know how to make it stop. Help!

That’s really frustrating, and also really normal to go through. It can be hard when you have school, health, extracurriculars, family, etc. to juggle, and she has work, family, adulting things, etc. to juggle as well. Sometimes, when any of those things collide, it can create a really easy start to an argument. First of all, it’s really important that you’re looking to fix this; you seem to want a good relationship with your mom. What I’d suggest doing is talk to her about the pattern you're noticing, so she knows you’re actively try- ing to better the situation. From there, think about things that help your mom relax! Maybe that’s going shopping, maybe it’s gardening, painting nails, crossword puzzles, doodling, board games baking...think of things you could do together. And make time for those on the weekends; even 20 minutes on one day of scheduled time with your mom. It’ll be great for her to see the effort you’re making, and she’ll respond to that as well. Make sure that you enjoy these activities too! Another thing I’d suggest is sharing about yourself, as much as you possibly can while still feeling comfortable. Introduce her to your taste in music, to your favorite book, to your favorite subject in school, to a really frustrating subject in school...whatever’s on your mind! For me, I’ve realized that when my mom and I fight a lot, it’s because we’re only talking to each other about logistical things or to-dos (what I need to bring for a bake sale, what appointments I have this week, when I need to take care of my sibling). But your mom is your family and she could be so much more! It’s almost like getting a friendship back to normal after a bit of a rough patch: do things you enjoy together, open up on both sides, listen on both sides, and don’t overthink things. I really hope that helps! Know that it’s never a bad idea to Courtesy of Good Housekeeping communicate to your mom about things she’s do- Mom and Daughter Fighting ing great or things that aren’t helpful, and most of all to let her get to know you, her daughter. <3 <3

My sister and I always fight over clothes. I feel like she's always borrowing my clothes, even when she doesn't really need to. I don't know why it bothers me so much, but it just does. We wrote up a contract at the beginning of the school year about sharing clothes, but both of us deviate from it all the time, so it's kind of pointless. I really don't want to be that mean sister who doesn't ever share her clothes, but at what point can I say no? What should we do to stop fighting?

It makes a lot of sense that this is bothering you! It might be helpful to think about what ex- actly it is about your sister borrowing you clothes that feels irritating to you. Is it because it seems like an invasive thing for her to do? Or because you agreed on something which neither of you have been sticking with? I think it’d be a good idea to figure this out and tell her your thoughts, and maybe re-draw an agreement or establish some good old sibling boundaries. I know that both younger and older siblings often start to really want to get closer to other siblings, especially when said sibling (you) is most likely busy with school. Maybe your sister is feeling a little distant from you, and her way of trying to get closer is by borrowing close “even when she doesn’t really need to” as you said. It definitely isn’t the best method, but my guess is that it comes from a place of good intentions. A good heart-to- heart talk doesn’t seem like it’d hurt— after you address the clothes issue, why don’t you find a way to chat with her and reconnect? Maybe find Courtesy of Yahoo a way to bond that doesn’t involve taking each Sisters Fighting other’s clothes without permission? :)
