AUSTRALIAN 2oc. FOOTBALL WORLD No. 1 (New Series) Sydney, Saturday-Sunday, 29-30 March, 1980 2 - AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL WORLD, March 29-30, 1980

Welcome to the first modest edition of "AFW". We promise you that in the weeks to come you will see a big improvement in our size and content. In the meantime, we hope you'll be satisfied with our attempts to keep you abreast of what's happening in Sydney and from right around the nation. "AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL WORLD" takes over from the long-standing "NSW Football Record" which has been part of the Sydney scene for 52 years. As we enter a new football era with the formation of the SYDNEY FOOTBALL LEAGUE, we trust you will be part of the big plans we have for "AFW" as the early weeks of the 1980 season develop. m A.F.C. ESCORT CUP Richmond Home by 21-Points

It's already been said many times during the week, but let's repeat it - "CONGRATULATIONS, NEW SOUTH WALES" The 21-point defeat of N.s.w. last Sunday at the in match 18 of the Escort Australian Football Championship series for 1980 is a loss in the record book, but it was a victory for the Australian game in this State, In the words of the Richmond captain Bruce Monteath - "All concerned should be proud of N.s.w., they played very well." That N.S.W. were beaten by a better side is an open question. N.S.W. were beaten by the vast difference and advantage that sets VFL teams apart from the rest. Their range of talent, experience, ruthless determination and necessity of victory from the boot studder up, through the committee, the coach and the players is a fact of life for a VFL club playing in the highest standard of competition that our Game offers. The successful blending of a non-professional group of players hundreds of miles apart was a vast accomplishment for the NSW selectors, Don Durnan, Doug Priest, Ian Harry and Reg Myers. But the greatest task facing any man was confronted by Allan Jeans who came through for NSW with flying colors. It was his dedication as State Coach in the weeks of preparation that mentally stimulated the NSW squad into a Team. The critics of representative football will have to seriously re-think their position after last Sunday's effort. They will easily buy into an ar.gument if anything is said against the necessity of forming, training and playing-to-win for New South Wales. N.S.W. won many hearts by their gutsy display at the S.C.G. last Sunday. It was yet another step on the "long road back" from the football wilderness. After 50 years, NSW is now slowly regaining their right to stand high in the Australian football community. RICHMOND: 4,3 5.7 14.12 17.19-121 defeated .!!§li: 2.3 6.7 8,12 14.16-100. Bob Clowes of NEUTRAL BAY PHOTOGP.APHICS, one of our 1980 "AFW" photographers captured the high-flying Richmond OUR COVER full forward MICHAEL ROACH at the Sydney Cricket Ground last Sunday. Roach with 9-goals was the chief destroyer of NSW in the 18th match of the Escort Australian Football Championships series. FIRST SEASON UNDER WAY Centenary for East Sydney & Newtown This weekend sees the first competitive season begin for the newly formed - SYDNEY FOOTBALL LEAGUE. The first meeting of SFL Directors was held last Monday to ratify the new Constitution that will usher a new era of football control. To explain, the NSW Australian Football League under its general manager Russell Hopper continues to exist as the paramount body for the Game in this State. Two other autonomous bodies have been formed - the NSW Country Australian Football League which describes itself; alongside the NSWCAFL is the SYDNEY FOOTBALL LEAGUE which will regulate control of all senior football in the metropolitan area. The SFL comprises one Director from each of the eight senior Sydney clubs. The SFL has also formed the Sydney Association which embraces those clubs that formerly played in Second Division. The Association as a body appoints two Directors to sit at the table of the SFL, and who have full voting rights. Heading the SFL as President is Bern Heafey, with Reg Myers as vice-president and Kevin Taylor as Secretary-Trasurer. These office-bearers were elected by the SFL Board of Directors last Monday and will retain their positions for a period of 24 months. m On the playing field·, 1980 is the Centenary Year for Newtown and East Sydney. It's a big occasion, marking the 100th year of organised football in Sydney; 100 years ago the first competition was formed by five clubs - East Sydney, Newtown, South Sydney, Sydney and Sydney University. Sydney disappeared sadly at the end of the 1971 season following years of struggle; South merged with Newtown after the season of 1976; while University by its formation in 1864 is NSW's oldest club and still flourishing now enters the new Association. Australian Football was big here in the 1880's and early 1890's when there were regular visits by clubs playing matches in the Newcastle and Sydney area. Yet the game died in 1898 and five years passed until ex-Collingwood captain Bill Strickland, together with Jim Phelan (a former South Melbourne player) and brothers Les and Oscar Balhausen met to form the NSW Australian Football League, playing their first season in 1903. It is interesting on the 100th anniversary of the Game in NSW, that the formation of the SYDNEY FOOTBALL LEAGUE should occur, As a new century of football begins, hopes are raised that determined progress will be maintained than in the time now passed. Prospects Only one SFL coach from 1979 has retained his position, and that is Premier coach JOHN PITURA at North Shore. Pitura is currently under suspension at the pleasure of the NSW Board of Management. The new players to the AVCO Bears will only just fill the gaps left by departures - JOHN TUCKWELL (Box Hill & Prahran), ROB DOCHERTY (Frankston), BOB WARRAN (ACT), BOB HICKS (SA Amateurs), COLIN PERKINS (Fitzroy) and PETER THATCHER (Frankston). Pitura has a great record on the track, two outings for two premierships. Close attention to their early 1980 matches will reveal if the Bears can maintain the pressure. (cont. page4) 4 - AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL WORLD, Ma~ch 29-30, 1980 from page 3 - Prospects --- The other seven coaches are all new to this season's clubs. ALEX RUSCUKLIC is the new man at Western Suburbs. After an 'i!'l!MATC amazing. season with the East Bulldogs in 1979, it was expected that Alex would return to Melbourne. Saturday at In the meantime, East Sydney determined that the former WA and South Melbourne champion forward AUSTIN ROBERTSON would again be NORTH SHORE the coach of the Tricolors. Austin had already led East to their BlACK AND RED 1976 flag. 1-PITURA, John (c+c) With the retirement of IAN HARRY announce4, Western Suburbs 2-MORGAN, Richard (vc) snapped up Ruscuklic, who will be going all out to better his 3-FITGERALD, Alan finals record of last season. The SFL Angels have recruited strongly to support their Keko vich hopes - JOHN PILKINGTON, the top Tasmanian ruckman from Team ± time ~· ti .
