THE ANGLICAN CHURCH OF ST JOHN THE EVANGELIST, GORDON ST LUKE THE EVANGELIST 18 OCTOBER 2015

R E C T O R’ S M E S S A G E Dear Friends, Today we celebrate the Feast of St Luke. In the Gospel, we hear of the sending our of the seventy. Luke is a missionary Gospel, and in celebrating his feast day we are reminded of our need to share our faith with others. It is not about being someone we are not. It is about being God’s people. If we are nervous about sharing our faith, then that is not an excuse. We have plenty of resources at our disposal here at St John’s to help us. It is simply a matter of wanting to be faithful to God and His call on our lives. With every blessing, Fr Keith

AFTER THE FÊTE—

From Pat Gaudry: “THANK YOU to each and every person who worked so hard to ensure the success of our Fête and raffle.

Thank you also for the generous financial contributions of donated goods, activities, ingredients, prizes, advertising, time and effort. Without many people digging deep into their wallets, the Fête bottom-line would not be nearly so rosy! If and when you have recovered, I would be interested in any helpful comments, critiques or ideas for how the Fête might be changed or improved for next year.

The Fête next year is Saturday, 8 October, the first Saturday after the Labour Day long weekend. I hope everyone can do the same stalls / activities next year. Please tell me if this is not possible.

Well done, Fête team, a great effort by so many people.”

WOMEN’S EVENING GROUP President Rhonda Cramer says “Thank you to all the helpers and cooks who did such a wonderful job supporting our CRAFT, CAKE AND JAM STALL. It was a magnificent effort and worthy of much praise. We took in over $5,800—an outstanding result. Please pat yourselves on the back.”

From Robyn Kerr: “The WOMEN’S EVENING GROUP enjoyed a very happy visit on Monday to ST JUDE’S, BOWRAL. A full coach of twenty parishioners, including gentlemen, enjoyed a very happy day. A warm welcome from Glenys Howarth at St Jude’s was most welcome, with a tour of the 1850s church, new halls, meeting the children’s Cubby House playgroup and morning tea. After leaving St Jude’s, the coach drove over Mount Gibraltar with stunning views of the countryside, then to lunch at Mittagong RSL in a private dining room. President Rhonda Cramer and I, the organiser, appreciated warm encouragement on the group’s initiative to visit another parish. Thank you, Father Keith, for a friendly send off. As well, On Course Tours’ glamorous driver Katrina charmed us all.”

Father Rob has received a thank you letter and card from some of the recent WARRIOR WELCOME HOME participants. That letter and card have been posted on the notice board in the Upper Room.

NSW Governor To Visit Parish to launch the book “Moral Injury: Unseen Wounds In An Age of Barbarism” related to Warrior Welcome Home Ministry

The Governor of New South Wales, His Excellency David Hurley AC DSC (Retd), accompanied by Mrs Hurley, will attend the parish to launch this book, which has been produced following the first symposium of the “Unseen Wounds: The Personal Costs Of Modern Warfare” project, an initiative of the Australian Centre for the Studies of Armed Conflict and Society, UNSW, Canberra. Professor Tom Frame, who leads the project, has edited the book, whose content relates directly to Father Rob’s work on our Warrior Welcome Home retreats and ministry.

The event will be held in the War Memorial hall on Friday, 13 November, with refreshments being served to guests from 5:45pm. The Governor will arrive at 6:00pm.

The format for the evening will be a welcome from the parish by the Rector, the Governor will then speak and Professor Frame will respond. We anticipate that the Governor and Mrs Hurley will then spend time meeting attendees. At the same time, copies of the book, autographed by Professor Frame, will be available for purchase, with a percentage of the proceeds going to the parish.

This is a whole of parish event and the Rector and Churchwardens most cordially invite all parishioners to attend. It is also an opportunity to let the Governor know how much we value and support this important ministry.

If you wish to accept the invitation, for catering purposes would you please notify Rosemary Angus in the church office, either by e-mail ([email protected]) or by adding your name to the list in the narthex? Let’s give the Governor a warm St John’s welcome!

NEXT SUNDAY IS “TRY CHOIR SUNDAY”!

NOW FOR BOTH THE 8:00AM AND 9:30AM SERVICES

Members of the congregation are invited either (1) to robe and sing with the 8AM Singers for the 8:00AM service (meet at 7:30AM in the Tower Room) or

(2) to robe and sing with the Parish Choir for the 9:30AM service (meet at 9:00AM in the hall) or

(3) to join with the choir singing the motet (hymn 269 at 8:00AM or hymn 295 at 9:30AM) in the choir stalls before returning to your seat after receiving Communion.

All are very welcome. Why not give it a go, or invite friends to come to church who may enjoy it? You are not signed up for life! New members of the choir are always welcome. There is no midweek rehearsal and you are welcome even if your life precludes your coming every Sunday.

6 The KU-RING-GAI PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA extends an invitation to attend a REMEMBRANCE CONCERT on 14 November at 7:30PM– music of peace and war by Holst, Tchaikovsky, John Williams, Sibelius, Peter Sculthorpe and a locally inspired commission Odyssey for choir and orchestra by Brendan Collins and Justin Fleming, in tribute to Ku-ring-gai residents at Gallipoli. Choirs from Abbotsleigh, Barker and Brigidine will participate. The concert will be held at Brigidine College, 325 Mona Vale Road, St Ives. Tickets are $30 / $25 / $15, family $75. There is funding from Ku-ring-gai Council for veterans to attend for free or nearly free. Book tickets online at www.kop.org.au or by telephone, Music Makers, 9499 6633 Monday to Friday, noon to 8:00PM or in person at Ku-ring-gai Neighbourhood Centre, St Ives Shopping Village, Monday to Friday, 9:00AM to 4:00PM. Booking fees apply for arrangements made over the telephone or in person.

This year’s CAROLS IN THE PARK is Saturday, 12 December. The organisers have written advising that persons interested in being choristers, on stage helping to lead the carols, should attend preliminary rehearsals with the Golden Kangaroos held Monday, 30 November at St Matthew’s, Pymble and Tuesday, 8 December at Beecroft Community Centre. E-mail [email protected] or telephone 0419 483 328 to indicate your interest and obtain the music. There are other ways to be involved—packing “Carols bags” in advance, selling the bags on the night, welcoming families as they arrive, or cleaning up the park after the event.

Each year the KU-RING-GAI COUNCIL recognises the efforts of individuals and groups who have made a significant contribution to the Ku-ring-gai community. AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDS will be presented at the Australia Day celebrations on 26 January. The three award categories are: Young Citizen of the Year (under 25 years old) , Citizen of the Year (over 25 years old) and Outstanding Service to the Ku-ring-gai Community (individual or group).
