5. FROM THE ROBERT R. COLES HISTORY ROOM

Glen Cove History Scavenger Hunt

Glen Cove Public Library invites you to participate in a summer scavenger hunt... a fun way to learn about your local history.

This family-friendly scavenger hunt will highlight the East Island (aka Morgan’s Island) and Morgan Park neighborhoods of the City of Glen Cove. The answer to each clue can be found in a public area. Please follow city parking rules and regulations.

Submit responses to the information desk or email to [email protected] and you will be given the answer key. An electronic format can be found here. All entries will be entered in our monthly drawing of the book, The Splendid Steamer Glen Cove, by Edward Magnani. The hunt begins and ends at the Glen Cove Public Library.

1. Whether you’re on your way in or out of the Library’s front entrance, you’ll need to look up. This clock is permanently set at ______. No one is quite sure of the significance of this time. Could it be the hour when the ghost of Melvil Dewey roamed the stacks?

2. The Matinecock _____and _____Club is a sportsman’s organization with an outpost along Dana’s Island Highway. The club maintains a skeet range in nearby Welwyn Preserve as well as a hunting lodge upstate. There is a small parking lot at the end of this road. It’s a good place to park the car and set off by foot to explore the adjacent East Island. (Hint: look for plaques, historical markers, and public postings for clues)

3. Originally built by J.P. Morgan Jr. as an entryway to his private residence, the East Island Bridge has since undergone several major upgrades before its rededication in the year_____. While the Morgan Mansion was demolished in 1980, the gardener’s and captain’s houses remain. Sections of the original brick walls surrounding the old dairy can also be seen on the aptly named Dairy Drive. The stone guardhouse was built after an assassination attempt was made on Morgan’s life in 1915 by Eric Muenter, a political dissident and German sympathizer.

4. When European settlers arrived in the mid 1600s, there were 13 tribes of Native Americans inhabiting Long Island. The North Shore tribes were Corchaug, Matinecock, Nesaquake, and Setalcott. Who purchased East Island from the Native Americans on June 22, 1667? ______

5. The coasts and coves of Long Island provided abundant food sources for Native Americans. Today, East Island has become a favorite local fishing spot for striped bass, bluefish, and porgy. However, authorities have warned against harvesting shellfish in the uncertified waters surrounding Dosoris Pond. The shells of hard clams served as wampum or money in the early settlements. In addition to the hard clam, what six other types of mollusk can be found here? 1. ______2. ______3. ______4. ______5. ______6. ______

6. East Island (aka Morgan’s Island) was also home to the Dodger, Roy Campanella whose career as a catcher spanned 1948-1957. The eastern part of the island is now maintained as a beach for Glen Cove residents only. This clue will require you to head to Pryibil Beach. By foot, you can enter through the gate at the end of Eastland Dr. By car, it is accessible by East Beach Dr. as you head east towards Lattingtown Road. Locate the “gatekeeper” booth at the entrance. What two things would the gatekeeper prohibit you from bringing? ______and ______

7. The next seven clues will take you to scenic Morgan Park. This 30-acre waterfront park is located at the junction of Germaine Street and Landing Road. J.P. Morgan Jr. created this park along the waterfront of Hempstead Harbor in memory of his beloved wife, Jane Norton Morgan. In 1932, he leased Morgan Memorial Park to the City of Glen Cove for 999 years at no charge. Locate the bronze plaque affixed to a large rock at the park entrance. What two words are used to describe the inhabitants of Glen Cove and Locust Valley for whose benefit the park is provided? ______and ______(Continued on next page…)

8. The semicircular theater framed by white neoclassical columns is a lovely stage with the serene in the background. Today, the site hosts the popular Morgan Park Summer Music Festival that continues the spirit of generosity by providing free professional concerts to the Glen Cove community. Music from many genres are presented every weekend in July and August. On what date was this stage presented to the City of Glen Cove? ______

9. To the left of the amphitheater is a building that houses one of several restrooms inside the park. The front facade holds 11 charming mosaic-tile artworks painted by 5th graders of Landing and Connolly Schools and donated to the park in 2018. Each work of art depicts a well-known Glen Cove institution. Name five of these: 1. ______2. ______3. ______4. ______5. ______

10. This structure is perhaps the most photographed backdrop of the park. The iconic gazebo was the original bandstand and has become an enduring symbol of the city’s fortitude. It was destroyed by an intense microburst during a summer storm in 2012 and restored the following year. Step inside for a panoramic view of the park. Stand in the center of the gazebo and look up at the decorative ceiling. How many triangles can you count? ______

11. White granite from Maine was used to line the promenade at the eastern end of the park. Follow this path to a scenic lookout composed of stone pillars and wooden trellis. Locate the bench to the right of the entrance to this outdoor structure. To whom is the bench dedicated? ______

12. The upper portion of Morgan Park can be reached by the set of stairs from this lookout. Benches along the upper level offer a beautiful vista of the surrounding harbors. In wintertime, neighborhood children are especially fond of sledding down the steep hills in this section of the park. Many picnic tables and barbecue pits are provided for family gatherings. How many barbecue pits are here? ______

13. Many specimen trees can be found throughout the park. The majestic Sugar Maple and Gingko trees are among the many varieties. Can you find at least three others? Hint: many trees bear a placard with their English and Latin names. 1. ______2. ______3. ______

14. Back at the Library, this outdoor artwork titled ______is by renowned American sculpturist, ______. The artist was born in 1902 in Austrian, Poland to a Jewish family. He studied art in Vienna before emigrating to the U.S. in 1921. His works have been exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Jewish Museum in New York. Today, his former home and studio in NYC’s Greenwich Village is open for tours and visits.
