HELMS HALL. B 760 VENICE BOULEVARD . 34. DON SWARTZ, LOYOLA TACKLE, VOTED PLAYER OF YEAR IN SO. CAL. '*AAAA*1 FOOTBALL FOR 1963 POR RELEASE: MONDAY, A.M., DECEMBER 30 and after ______DO NOT RELEASE PRIOR TO DEC. 30 a.m.______L pyola High School, champion in "AAAA" Division Southern Section ¡CIF football for the second straight year and supplier of the "Player of the Year" for 1961 and 1962, added another star to a long list representing the school when the Helms Board of Football named Lovola's fine lineman and tackle Don Swartz "Player of the Year" in "AAAA" Southern Section football for 1963. Coach Mario DiMuro was most concise when he credited Don Swartz with making the Cubs' single wing offense go over the past two years. "A good blocker on offense and strong on defense", is the way coach DiMuro put it. Last year, "Player of the Year" honors went to Loyola's Steve Grady. The year before it was Paul Horgan. Both were strong tailbacks. Some 18 years ago another fine Loyola back, A1 Pollard, was named the top player in the Southland in consecutive seasons... 191+5—¿1-6 » It is most unusual to have a lineman win "top" player honors. In 1960, Santa Barbara center-linebacker Jim Murphy won the Helms Board selection narrowly. You have to go back to 1950 and Charlie Powell of San Diego High to find another lineman named for the honor. Charlie was an end and went directly to the San Francisco l+9ers, where he per formed for many years. As indicated above, Loyola wound up champions of the "AAAA" Division of the Southern Section of the CIF for the second consecutive year. In marching to their second straight crown, Loyola defeated the likes of Santa Monica (21-12), Pasadena (27-11+) , Long Beach Wilson (10-7), and El Rancho in the finals, 21-0. Don Swartz will be recipient of the Helms medal award, recog nizing him for having been named "Player of the Year" for 1963, at the 27th annual All-Southern California Board of Football Awards Program to be held at Helms Hall on Saturday morning, January 18, at 10:30 a.m. Don will also have his name engraved upon the Paul H. Helms Trophy which is permanently housed at Helms Hall, Los Angeles. All players named for All-Southern Section, CIF honors will be presented with framed scrolls, while coach Mario DiMuro will receive the traditional silver tumbler award for having coached his Loyola Cubs to the title. Twenty-two schools are represented on the three-team selection with title-winning Loyola placing four players. Runner-up El Rancho landed three, as did Long Beach's Poly and Wilson. Two players were named from Santa Monica, Muir, Redlands, Santa Barbara and Anaheim. The only repeater off last year's team is Santa Monica center- linebacker Rich Bassler. Mike Bergdahl, fine Loyola tailback who brok- all records previously set by Cub tailbacks Horgan and Grady, was the only lower classman (junior) named to the first team. Big Whittier end George Buehler was the Ione junior on the second team, while backs Gene Washington (Poly, LB) and Eddie Saenz (Santa Monica) are the third team juniors. H elms Athletic Foundation’s All-Southern California Board of ‘Football expanded Its selections In 1963, naming teams In both "AAA-AA" and "A-Small School" Divisions. Prior to 1963* the Board had selected teams in only "Large" and "Small" Schools divisions. In announcing its decision to name not only the major or "AAAA" teams, but also two separate teams from lower divisions, the Board felt a more even distribution of players could be made. Plus the fact, of course, that more boys would have the opportunity of being honored. It was a co-Player of the Yean selection in the "AAA-AA" Divis ion, as Alemany's Art Golden, superlative QB-HB combination, and Paul Marguglio, "AAA" Champion St. Francis tackle, received recognition. Art Golden was named to the 2nd "Small Schools" team in 1962. Golden led his Indian teammates to victory over "AAA" champion St. Francis during the regular season and was an offensive ball of fire the entire season. Marguglio was coach Jack Friedman's top player on the St. Francis team, which marched through West Covina (18-0), Claremont (27-19), Santa Ana Valley (6-0) and La Mirada in the finale, 7-0. The Board cast a near-unanimous ballot for Santa Clara QB ace Andy Herrera as "A-SC" Player ofYear. 156 points for the season in lead ing the Saints to the "A" Division title. Santa Clara whipped Glenn [¡.6-0, Mission, SLO, 19-6, and Coachella, 19-11)., the latter in the play off finale. Herrera accounted for nine TDs in the three playoff games. Brea-Olinda, which placed 2 players on the "AAA-AA" Teams along with St. Francis, won the "AA" Division championship. Brea defeated Thousand Oaks (13-12), Buena (27-0), and Santa Paula (21-7) in the title game. Lutheran High, which led all schools in placing players on the "A-Small Schools" Division teams with three, defeated Desert (I¡.3-0)> Bishop (12-6) and Rim of the World (i;0-12) in the finals. All three players of the year — Art Golden, Paul Marguglio, and Andy Herrera will be recipients of the Helms "Player of the Year" medal awards at the 27th annual All-Southern California Board of Foot ball Awards Program to be held at Helms Hall on Saturday morning, Jan. 18, at 10:30 a.m. All players named for honors, plus coaches and special guests from the world of football will be on hand to pay trib ute to this year's crop of fine players. Along with scrolls and medals for the honored players, silver tumbler awards will be presented to the four championship coaches of each division. Jack Friedman of St. Francis (AAA Champs), Glen Hastings of Brea-Olinda (AA Champs), Lou Cvijanovich of Santa Clara (A Champs) and Eugene Oetting (Small Schools) of Lutheran will be receiving the traditional silver tumbler awards Repeaters on the "AAA-AA" Division team are Alemany's Art Golden and St. Monica's Richard Havel. Beth boys were second team selections in 1962. On the "A-Small Schools" Division teams just one boy is back fra: last year's selections. End Jim Young of Lutheran is the Ione repeater. All players named to the "AAA-AA" Division teams are seniors, while three boys on the "A-Small Schools" teams will have another year to gain honors. Dennis Steenbergen, Nogales tackle, Brian Kirkpatrick, Rim of the World quarterback, and fullback Marv Paolini of Mission, SLO, should all be top candidates for all-star team honors in 196i+. Some thirty-nine Southland high schools are represented on the two "division" teams this year. Not only will players receive beautiful framed scroll awards in recognition of their achievements, but their high schools will be recipients of duplicate awards for their trophy room or trophy case. " S . . ' — ■■■" • 1 arv Adamo, two-time All-Los Angeles City first team end and M leader of 's championship line, was a unanimous choice a3 "Player of the Year" when members of Helms Athletic Foundation's All-Los Angeles City Board of Football met to name their annual All-City Teams. It is interesting to note that Marv Adamo is the first lineman to be named for "Player of the Year" honors since another pair of fine ends shared this distinction back in 1957. On this occasion it was Jim Bates of Manual Arts and Bob Levingston of L.A. High who shared honors. As expected, City Champion Birmingham led all other teams in placing players on this year's All-City eleven. Six representatives from coach George Goff's Braves were named, three of them on the first team. Runner-up Los Angeles, Polytechnic, Van Nuys, Gardena and Fre mont each placed three players on the honor teams. City Champion Birmingham compiled an awesome record during the 1963 campaign and Marv Adamo led the Braves* line, one of the most fierce aggregations to come along in years. The Braves averaged 1+2|- points in six league encounters, blanking five teams in the process. Coach George Goff made it quite clear he considered his star end the finest football player in the valley this season. The Helms Board con sidered him the best in all of Los Angeles for 1963. For having been selected the top player in Los Angeles City football for 1963, Marv Adamo will be honored, along with all other all-star team members, at the 27th annual All-Southern California Board of Football Awards Program. Awards will be presented to the honored players at Helms Hall on Saturday morning, January 18, at 10:30 a.m. Framed scroll awards will be presented to each city player and special medal awards will be given those players named for league "Player of the Year" honors. Never failing to score less than 21+ points per game — and on five occasions tallying twice that many or more — Birmingham had only slightly more difficult a time in the City playoffs. East-Valley ohamp Van Nuys, second highest scoring city team which had averaged 32 points per contest, was blanked by the Braves in the first playoff round, I4.8-G,. Marine League champion Gardena fell to the Braves' tomahawk in the semi finals, 38-27, and Southern League champ Los Angeles put up a stiff battle before falling 21-11+. In the three playoff games, Birmingham averaged 36 points to the opposition's IÍ4.. Seventeen Los Angeles City high schools are represented on the 1963 All-Los Angeles City honor teams. Four players were named for honors for a second year. As previously indicated, Marv Adamo is on the first team for the second straight year. Tackle Jack O'Malley from Banning was a second team choice in 1962. Tony Kochinas of Lincoln and Hollywood's Dann Boyd, second team members this year, were on the third eleven in 1962. It appears that backfield strength will be apparent next fall. Four junior backs were named to the all-star teams, while two linemen were picked. Three quarterbacks — Steve Sogge, Rick Purdy and Craig Schusterick -- will be around in 196I+, as will Gardena fullback Jim Lewis. Fremont center, A1 Proctor, and Garfield end Tom Georgine will also have another shot at All-City honors. Coach Stan Smith's fine junior QB, Steve Sogge, was selected as the top performer in the league for 1963. Sogge completed 61 of 90 passes for a 68$ completion mark during the league season. Following two playoff games — Gardena defeated Lincoln 39-12 and lost to Birm ingham, 38-27 -- Steve brought his completion total to 87 out of 137 for a 61].$ mark. He threw for 20 touchdowns during the year. With Gardena and Jordan on top in league play with ip—1 efforts, Narbonne and Banning came next with 3-2 records and Carson, 1 —ip, and San Pedro, 0-5, drew up the rear. Versatile quarterback-halfback Dann Boyd of Hollywood High, an All-City choice in 1962, was a unanimous choice as "Player of the Year" ■n Western League football for 1963, it was announced today by the Helms Athletic Foundation's All-Los Angeles City Board of Football. It remained for Westchester High to walk off with most of the positions on the first all-league team, however, as five of coach Bill Young's stalwarts were selected for honors. Hollywood, finishing in a dead heat with Palisades for second, placed three players on the first team. Dann Boyd, who performed at two positions for coach Lou Birnbaura at Hollywood, scored 78 points during the season, among the league's best records. Boyd received overwhelming support from league coaches as the league's top back. Other repeaters on this year's All-Western eleven are Carl Wins low, Dan Levy and Mike Tozzi. Westchester ran off with the title for 1963 with a perfect 6-0 record, averaging 32 points per game in the process. Tightly bunched behind the winner came Hollywood and Palisades, Í+-2; Venice, 3—35 Uni versity, 2-1;.; Hamilton, 2—ip; and Fairfax, 0-6, Not only did West chester do a remarkable job on offense in '63, the team's defensive record showed them allowing a mere 3 points per game. In the first round of the playoff, Westchester was beaten by Los Angeles, Ipl—13- All-Los Angeles City Football Team selections have been made by L.A. City Board of Football for the past 26 years. Board members in clude Ralph Alexander (LA Herald-Examiner), Jeff Prugh (LA Times), jprry Weiner (The Citizen News), Gayle Palmer (San Pedro News-Pilot), Wayne Wilson (Van Nuys News) Braven Dyer, Jr. (Secretary) and Bill Schroeder (Chairman). It remained, however, for crafty Art Arzate, coach A1 Padilla's quarterback, to walk off with "Player of the Year" honors for runner-up Garfield High. Arzate completed 85 of 158 passes for a 5U$ completion mark and scored on 12 TD flips. His total yardage was 1,302 and he boasted a 38.7-yard punting average. Coach Padilla makes no bone3 about rating Arzate a better QB all-around than last year's first team All-City choice from Garfield, Alex Sotomayor. Both Ed Blanton andDennis Carpenter are repeaters off last year's first team. Tom Woodson, Bill Collier and Steve Bustillos were named to the second team in 1962. Both ends, Glenn Carr of Bell, and Tom Georgino of Garfield, are juniors. There were also two lower classmen named to the second team. Following Bell in the Eastern League parade to the wire, were Garfield, 3-1-1; Huntington Park, 3-2; Roosevelt, 2-2-1; South Gate. 1-1+; and Wilson, 0-5. Bell bettered Jordan in the first playoff round, although the score was 0-0, and then was defeated by L.A. 26-7. Coach Bob Enger's Bell troops boasted one of the top defensive records in city play for 1963, allowing the opposition less than a touchdown av erage in five league encounters. As has been done over the past 26 years, league players will re ceive special scroll awards for having been selected on the all-loop elevens. Tony Kochinas, outstanding both offensively and defensively for coach Skip Giancanelli's Northern Loop title winners, was unanimous "Player of the Year" choice, when Helms Athletic Foundation's All-Los Angeles City Board of Football met at Helms Hall last week to make the annual gridiron selections. The diminutive halfback — 5'9" and 170 pounds -- was co-player of the year with teammate Tony Rosas in 1962. This year he won th? honor alone. Tony scored 73 points during the year and led his mates into the playoff against Gardena in the first round, where they were defeated 39-12. Lincoln landed atop the standings at season's close with e. [(.-1 record followed by Eagle Rock and Verdugo Hillr at 3-2; Marshall, 2-'-2; Belmont, 0-3-lj and Franklin, 0-3-1. The Belmont-Franklin game was not played, which accounts for their i|.-game record. Outstanding flanker, Jesse Parral, only a junior this season, repeated on the first team from last year. He stands an excellent chance of being among the very few city players who have gained all league first-team recognition three years....if he remains in good health in ' 61+ that is. All players named for 1963 all-league honors will be recipients of Helms Foundation scroll awards from All-Los Angeles City Board of Football. This board has made similar selections dating back to 1937. Tony Kochinas, named "Player of the Year" on this year's All Northern team, will receive a special Helms medal award at the 27th annual All-Southern California Board of Football Awards Program to be held at Helms Hall on Saturday, January 18, at 10 : 3 0 a.m. All-Los Angeles City, as well as those players named for All Southern Section honors in the CIF will be on hand to receive their scrolls on the l8th,

Coach George Goff's Birmingham Braves walked off with the Los Angeles City football title in 1963 and with it the majority role in the All-League lineup released today by Helms Athletic Foundation's All-Los Angeles City Board of Football. No less than eight players received recognition on the first team with two additional players, named to the second squad. Taft placed two of its players on the first eleven, while Reseda and Granada Hills landed one each. The braves made a shamblej of the West-Valley League in 1963, amassing 265 points in league play for an aver-ge of 1;2ír points per encounter. Over the last five games, Birmingham blanked its opposition and allowed only 13 points to Cleveland during the league exercises. In the playoff, Birmingham beat Van Nuys, I4.8 -O, Gardena, 38-27 and Los Angeles in the finale, 21-11;» "Player of the Year" honors went to the Braves' 6-foot, 200-pound end, Marv Adamo. Coach Goff calls last year's All-City first team end, "The best football player In the valley.. ..if not the city!." Adamo was picked, along with fire of his teammates to fill six of the seven line positions on the all-'league roster. After Birmingham in the West-Valley League race came Taft and Reseda at 1;— 2J Granada Hills, 3-3? Canoga Park, 2-1;; Cleveland, 2-1;; and Chatsworth, 0-6. Marv Adamo, Bill Hayhoe, Don McSwain and Mike Helwig are all re peaters from last season's all-league first team. Kent Wetzel, Gary Berthelson and Mike McConahey were second team picks in '62. A pair of fine Southern League backs — Carlton Kelly of Manual Arts u'd Willie Crawford of Fremont — were named co-Players of the Year for 1963 when members of the All-Los Angeles City Board of Foot ball gathered at Helms Hall last week to make their annual football team selections. Positions on the all-league eleven were very evenly distributed and justly so, considering the fact the race for the title was so close. Both Los Angeles (Ij.-0-l) and Fremont (3-1-1) placed four players on the first team, while Manual Arts (3-1-1) filled three positions. Manual Arts’ Kelly, a.t 6 ' 5 :! and 1 9 5 pounds did a remarkable job at QB for Jim Blewett1s Toilers, Coach Blewett was high in his praise. Kelly scored L8 points and his passing and defensivo ability had much to do with Manual's fine record. Willie Crawford, among the city's speediest backs, was coach Frank Nobbe's ace, He scored 95 points during the year and was acclaimed by those coaches both in and out of the league as a top competitor. Los Angeles High, winner of the Southern Loop title, went all the way to the finals in 1963, only to loose to Birmingham, 21-ll|., after a highly spirited ball game. L.A. had defeated Westchester, Í4.I-I3 , and Bell, 26-7, prior to running into the Braves, Three players are back -from iast year's second team. Norman McBride, Randy Key and Kelly are the repeaters. Only one junior was named to the first team, but he is an outstanding condidate. Center Alvin Proctor, who anchored the center of the Fremont line, will be back for another year under coach Nobbe. _ All-league players, as they have done over the past 26 years, will be recipients of scroll awards recognizing them for their fine play during 1 9 6 3 . These scrolls will be forwarded to the coaches for presentation at the high schools.
