May 12, 2020 Welcome back to Teaching Tuesday! Great work to everyone who completed last week’s activities!

These activities are designed for students in Grades 1-7. We recognize that not every child will be able to complete all of the activities and that’s okay.

We worked hard to include creative ways you can help your child develop their language arts, math, science, and art skills. We hope you and your child enjoy going through these workbooks over the next few months.

We are not educational professionals, these activities should not replace course materials you may receive from your child’s teacher(s) but are meant to provide additional material and entertainment for your child.

Once you complete an activity, please email it to [email protected] to be entered to win various prizes!

Can you imagine being an goalie and playing without a mask to protect your face? That’s how the goalies used to play, until came along. On November 1, 1959, Plante’s nose was broken when he was hit with a puck. He returned from the dressing room with stiches wearing a home-made . He refused to play without it after that, and because of a winning streak, the head coach allowed him to since teams did not have alternate goalies at the time and he didn’t want to lose.

Plante had previously worn the mask during practice, but until this point no goaltender wore a mask full-time. When questioned about wearing the mask, Plante made an analogy to a person skydiving without a parachute. Although Plante faced some laughter, the face-hugging fiberglass mask soon became the standard, and by the end of 1969 only a few in the NHL played without one. The last goaltender to play without a mask was Andy Brown, who retired from the NHL in 1974. Jacques Plante retired from the NHL in 1975 and is largely credited with the popularization of the goaltender mask.

True or False?

1. A goaltender should wear a mask to protect his face 2. In 1965, you did not have to wear a mask if you did not want to 3. Plante put on his mask after he was hit in the face with a stick 4. The first standard mask was made out of plastic 5. Andy Brown was the first NHL player to wear a mask full-time
