outlines how to move forward with hope and confidence. Things Above from Fr. Bilot The book will be available in July, and we have ordered many copies for the parish. When it arrives, I strongly urge you to read the book and pass it on. This past month, the Archbishop Please continue to pray for myself, Fr. Bob McCabe, announced, in response to the Synod and and for our parishes, as we all make the transition in the Unleash the Gospel, that there will be no next week. My final bulletin article will be next weekend, more Sunday sporting events in Catholic June 30. I begin at St. Paul, Grosse Pointe Farms, on schools. In 2016, when bishops, priests, July 1. religious and laypeople of the Archdiocese came together for an intensive time of In Peace, discernment and planning, one of the action steps was eliminating athletic Fr. Jim Bilot games/practices on Sunday. This information was put forth in the Pastoral Letter, Unleash the Gospel, with a timetable of implementation. This time has come. I know that the news is met both with happiness and disappointment. Even I have mixed feelings about the decision, because there are pros and cons to any decision made. However, I believe we need to defer to the movement of the Holy Spirit. Our parish, at every weekend Mass from May until November of 2016, prayed for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Synod assembly (as did most of the parishes in the Archdiocese). The Holy Spirit is going to guide us into unchartered waters, and it is very uncomfortable for many of us sports enthusiast or not. May God continue to shine through you and I met with our Athletic Directors, Mike Opiela and Mark Ellul bless you abundantly in your priestly for CYO (grade school level), and Garrett Simpson and Ben ministry. Cronin for the high school. (It is interesting to note that the Thank you for your loving service to the Catholic high schools typically do not have games on Sunday.) In meeting with the ADs, a game plan has been established so Catholic Church and to your Divine Child all sports, in all seasons, have equitable playing time on the field Family. We love you! or in the gyms. There are many sports at many grade levels that need to be accommodated. The ADs have done a wonderful job coordinating schedules for the next academic year. I am confident, despite the weather related issues and Fr. Jim’s new residence potential schedule changes, that everyone will have ample beginning July 1, 2019 practice and playing time. In the end, I hope and pray that the now available time on St. Paul on the Lake Sunday is used to help build up the family unit. It would be a Catholic Church dark moment if the time that was previously carved out for sporting events was replaced with shopping and working around 157 Lake Shore Road the home. The point of a no sports Sunday is to help families Grosse Pointe Farms, MI 48236 reconnect on the home front and attend Mass as a family. I also ask that those who are affected by these changes see 313.885.8855 parish office the no sports Sunday as an opportunity to grow in holiness and www.stpaulonthelake.org not an opportunity to begin travel sports. Many travel sports occur on the weekend and these organizations do not care about Sunday Mass and family bonds. We need to be vigilant, trusting in the Holy Spirit and not the cultural norms. Corpus Christi Eucharistic Procession On another note, so much is still continuing to unfold with TODAY! the clergy sexual abuse scandal. It has been a trying, frustrating, and very sad time for all of us. It is so difficult to Sunday, June 23, 2019 comprehend this horrendous evil. The month of June marks the month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which became popular through the visions of St. Margaret Mary Alocoque, is one of the most powerful and intimate devotions in the church. While I could write about many different aspects of this devotion, the essence of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus does not need further explanation. He gives His heart to us so that we receive the full gift of His love and that we might love with His heart. The image below of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was All high school students and 2019 introduced to me when I was in college at Central Michigan graduates are invited! University. “Our trials are very often the way he chooses to teach us to practice the virtues we have been praying for.” Fr. Bonaventure Perequin, O.P.
The Lord has put on my heart this week to share the importance of trials in the life of a Christian. Everyone goes through trials in life, whether those trials are sickness, failure, loss SUMMER ADULT FAITH of employment, misunderstanding, etc. We all face disappointments or setbacks. It may seem easy to point the FORMATION finger at those who live lives that are comfortable, but people often mask their trials by turning to worldly things to fill the JULY 17, 2019 7PM 8:15 PM void and pain in their lives. The Israelites were tempted to Divine Child Demmer Field House think that God the Father no longer cared about what happened to them. It is often through our trials that we end up paradoxically growing closer to God. A trial is a way that God molds us and forms us to depend on Him for everything. Televangelist, Bishop T.D Jakes, says that “if we don’t honor God in the rehearsal, we won’t honor him during the reception.” The Christian life is centered on a cross, which means suffering. A Christian can’t be immune from suffering. God did not promise us comfort, but He promised us that He would be with us during difficult times. It is often when we are in the most difficult times of life, that God ends up showing us His power from on high. One of my favorite verses from the Psalm which I pray often is the prayer of King David in the Psalms.
“ I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in Him. Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, who does not look to the proud, to those who turn to false gods.” Psalm 40:1 5
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of any kind, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” – James 1:2 4
