At first I applauded Mr. Hammered was a little disappointing, it just didn't hold my interest as strongly as the first two. The first two books of this series were interesting, but didn't make me enthusiastic to read more. Lots of life forms died and there was some serious fighting going on. Oberon has become such an important character in the series that his absence was like a gaping hole. But now I see what's really been going on all this time! He lives and owns a bookstore in Arizona, the kind likely to be filled with books on Wicca, as much as Buddhism, with a side business of an apocathary where he blends teas for his customers. In that case, we can't Maybe I need to take a druid break I came across this 3-in-1 novel and thought 'what the heck'. I can only wonder who, or what, we'll meet next in Book 4. NOOK Book. Or rather, it doesn't seem like it should've been able to sustain itself for the several thousand years it's been around. There were parts of the book that simply made me laugh. And gravy! Of course others are going to feel left out. If you have read the books, as I mentioned above I highly recommend listening to the audio book. Hammered - 5 stars If you want to read an urban fantasy with a witty protagonist, read this. Oct 26, Beth rated it liked it Shelves: kobo. How do you hold on to what makes you you — and conversely, is it possible to hold on too much, becoming consumed by a grudge that might not be worth all that you sacrifice to it? This time, we get a "break" in the middle, where in the form of male-bonding, each party share their tales on why they are determined to get their revenge over Thor. Does being one with Gaia somehow also connect one with Star Trek? I found myself laughing out loud at quite a This series is now at the my top favorite series. Giggling Uncontrollably. Aug 09, Ginam Vickers rated it it was amazing. I'm a big fan of having different cultural elements in a story, and in addition to the Irish elements, we get some Polish elements as well. I can't wait to continue reading this wonderful series. I really liked that we got to hear everyone's stories and find out why Gunnar and Leif hated Thor sop much. Please try again later. Jan 22, Belinda rated it really liked it Shelves: fantasy. It also leaves you on a bit of a cliffhanger, one that all but guarantees you'll be back for Tricked. Original review can be found at Booknest. Unfortunately, the list of problems that I have with this series is much more lengthy. It's so easy to get caught up in his storytelling I have a new favorite author! Hammered: The Iron Druid Chronicles Writer If you want to read a book with silly puns in order to have fun, read this. What I loved about this book, and about Atticus is how charming he is. Oberon has become such an important character in the series that his absence was like a gaping hole. I might have that not quite. Aug 21, Robin Bridge Four rated it liked it Shelves: adorable-alphas , witches-warlocks-and-magic , bro-mantic , uf-pnr , fantastic-fantasy. I don't want to read about "heroes" who offer up goddesses to monstrous thugs for eternal gang rape. But when an evil sorcerer - and amateur shoplifter - snatches an ancient Egyptian tome of black magic, The Grimoire of the Lamb, Atticus is not sheepish about pursuing him to the ends of the earth The short story, Clan Rathskeller, is a good glimpse at the main character's life before the big upheavals that come from this series of books. One survival strategy has worked for Atticus for more than two thousand years: stay away from the guy with the lightning bolts. I wish that Oberon would have been around for more of the fun but that is just because he is my favorite character. I loved books 1 and 2 and was looking forward to this one. Luke Daniels did a fantastic job with the narration making this a very easy book to listen to for long periods of time. The earlier books, Hounded and Hexed , though connected, also worked as stand alones, something that I was very excited about and that I lauded Hearne for creating. That's why I didn't care so much for the first two books, and that trend continues with the third. The Frost giants? We lost most of Oberon's humor this time, and that's a big laugh hit. I am extremely impressed with his comedic timing for it was spot on. Instead, he has been drawn into a revenge plot that he actually has no stake in besides keeping his word. They're full of action, comedy and more than a little bit of danger. To ask other readers questions about Hammered , please sign up. Review of the audiobook narrated by Luke Daniels. Random House Publishing Group. Cidney Nothing is finer than statues and stone tributes. Finally, these books have a gargantuan logic problem right in their heart. As with that series, maybe I'll come back to this one in a year or so when it may feel fresh again. Besieged: The Iron Druid Chronicles. Hammered: The Iron Druid Chronicles Reviews But something was missing in this book. These Iron Druid books provide the perfect blend of light-hearted fun, and some dark and serious moments. Unfollow podcast failed. Atticus is charming and funny and is always getting into trouble on a cosmic scale. I'll keep listening as long as Kevin Hearne keeps writing. Of course others are going to feel left out. Luke Daniels is a great fit for the series and it's no fault of his that I didn't enjoy this book. I might have OD'd on druids.. I don't quite know what to think of his inclusion in the pantheon. Mar 18, Rayven rated it it was amazing. I need more substance than just an endless parade of mythological characters and gods doing and saying mildly funny things. I may read the next book, but it will be in hopes of seeing justice for what was done in this book. Just in case you are wondering, this is a series that should be read in order. On the whole, though, Hammered is a much more serious story than either Hounded or Hexed. Jan 04, Wanda rated it it was ok Shelves: urban-fantasy , good-dog , fantasy , speculative-fiction , public-library , read-in This section should have been heavily character driven A story full of bad ass characters what more do you need, I recommend you pick the Luke Daniels versions narration. And from there you just climb it, right? What I loved about this book, and about Atticus is how charming he is. Add to Wish List failed. Apr 18, Jason Baris added it. The short story, Clan Rathskeller, is a good glimpse at the main character's life before the big upheavals that come from this series of books. It focuses mainly on the world and religion of the Druids and the Fae from where their magic comes from. The way I figure it, Ratatosk has to be an utter badass. However, it means breaking his tenuous social obligations to his apprentice, his employees and business, and to his friend, Mrs. As with all of Kevin's books, there is some great action scenes, Humor with our favorite hound, descriptive and imaginative locations and plenty of mythology thrown into the mix. Probably too many pop culture references to make these last long, but since they are fairly recent, it isn't a problem. And when something isn't an instant-buy, it rarely makes it up my To-Read queue. Members save with free shipping everyday! There are no discussion topics on this book yet. He manically scrambles back and forth between the eagle in the canopy and the great wyrm at the roots, ferrying messages of slander and vitriol between them, yadda yadda yadda. I really liked that we got to hear everyone's stories and find out why Gunnar and Leif hated Thor sop much. Now on to my quibbles These books make me happy. This point-of-view switch is both powerful and a bit nostalgic. Can't wait to start the next novel. View Product. Despite multiple warnings and portents of dire consequences, Atticus and Leif journey to the Norse plain of Asgard, where they team up with a werewolf, a sorcerer, and an army of frost giants for an epic showdown against vicious Valkyries, angry gods, and the hammer-wielding Thunder Thug himself. Hammered: The Iron Druid Chronicles Read Online Giggling Uncontrollably. It's Leif's revenge but he wants to keep his word. Kevin Hearne hugs trees, pets doggies, and rocks out to heavy metal. • Re-Avatarization and Assimilation of Divine Figures in Neil Gaiman’S American Gods and Kevin Hearne’S Iron Druid Chronicles
IMPACT: International Journal of Research in Humanities, Arts and Literature (IMPACT: IJRHAL) ISSN(P): 2347-4564; ISSN(E): 2321-8878 Vol. 4, Issue 4, Apr 2016, 39-54 © Impact Journals DRIBBLING WITH GODS: RE-AVATARIZATION AND ASSIMILATION OF DIVINE FIGURES IN NEIL GAIMAN’S AMERICAN GODS AND KEVIN HEARNE’S IRON DRUID CHRONICLES JYOTI MISHRA Department of English, RBVRR Women’s College, Hyderabad, Telangana, India ABSTRACT When people migrate from one land to another, they take with them their culture, their traditions and their religion, which demarcates them as the ‘other’ and at the same time is the marker of their identity. But what happens to the Gods in the foreign land? Do they transmute from spiritual and religious figures to cultural symbols and then finally merges into popular culture to their death and eventual ‘re-avatarization’? I use the term ‘re-avatarization’ to signify the re- imagination of ancient accepted views of certain ideas, in this case, the idea of Gods with all its associated power and omniscience to something created out of human imagination more connected to current times. Neil Gaiman’s American Gods talks about the migration of these Gods with their people into the ‘new land’ America where they either became lost as their followers dwindled and lost belief, or became transmuted into other avatars due to their re-imagination by the people. Kevin Hearne’s Iron Druid series introduces many such Gods, Gods lost from memory and ones still remembered, from all over the world. Terry Pratchett in his Discworld series talks about the power of belief which sustains and gives power to certain entities to be Gods.
