At the time plumbing contractors and service companies were consolidating and we were concerned the big box stores were going to put the wholesalers out of Abusiness or at least make it difficult for them to operate. The contractors didn’t only share this feeling, but the wholesalers also felt this way. As you may recall the big boxes were being very aggressive in building new locations. We are now seeing the wholesalers getting stronger and bigger and actually digging in to compete with the Big Boxes. The Big Boxes tried selling wholesale only, opened a Wholesale Outlet and it didn’t work very well. They are also trying to corner the parts and repair supply side, but there also appears to be resistance to that. The Big Boxes are now buying up suppliers of different types and trying to get into every corner of the market. We didn’t see consolidating become all it was made out to be. I believe the dot-com crash had something to do with this. I think our concern now is the Big Boxes are threatening to do installations. At this point you can get most anything you purchase at the Big Boxes installed by them, or actually a contractor REID PACIFIC COMPANY they sub out to. They advertise this alongside the in Business 40+ Years product price with a typical installation cost. This can be very disconcerting to us as they are setting a Representing these quality lines benchmark for a particular installation, whether and more... accurate or not. VERIZON POLITICAL CONTRIBUTIONS JANUARY – DECEMBER 2008 Verizon Political Contributions January – December 2008 1 A Message from Tom Tauke Verizon is affected by a wide variety of government policies — from telecommunications regulation to taxation to health care and more — that have an enormous impact on the business climate in which we operate. We owe it to our shareowners, employees and customers to advocate public policies that will enable us to compete fairly and freely in the marketplace. Political contributions are one way we support the democratic electoral process and participate in the policy dialogue. Our employees have established political action committees at the federal level and in 25 states. These political action committees (PACs) allow employees to pool their resources to support candidates for office who generally support the public policies our employees advocate. This report lists all PAC contributions and corporate political contributions made by Verizon in 2008. The contribution process is overseen by the Corporate Governance and Policy Committee of our Board of Directors, which receives a comprehensive report and briefing on these activities at least annually. We intend to update this voluntary disclosure twice a year and publish it on our corporate website. We believe this transparency with respect to our political spending is in keeping with our commitment to good corporate governance and a further sign of our responsiveness to the interests of our shareowners.
