Some Thoughts from Your Pastor !

Today’s readings attest to the fact that God’s call list is littered with seemingly unworthy !people. And God’s call has come and still comes in countless ways, including lofty visions, among crowds of people, and in the midst of unabashedly simple work. Peter confessed that he was a sinful man unworthy of following the Lord. But Jesus let him know that he was capable of more than he had ever dreamed of which should give us pause to recall the reasons for our faith. Like Isaiah, we need to take time to remember and cherish our moments at marveling at God’s grandeur and love and like Peter we need to renew our awe at the power and love that has brought us to this moment in our lives where we still recognize our littleness and our need and desire to become all !God intends us to be. We naturally should then be prepared for the fact that opening ourselves to a renewed encounter with Jesus will change us. We must, however, be careful and sensible enough not to overplay the fact that we are unworthy sinners. Thinking “I am not worthy” didn’t work for Peter and others, and it won’t work for us. We need to be purged of our false humility and reluctance and the Worker of Miracles is the one who can do it, because if you were impressed by the fishing miracle in today’s Gospel, just press your finger to your wrist or you neck. There you can feel your pulse. Your heart, another miracle, beats 50 100 times a minute! What a reminder that God performs this miracle again and again. As you sleep, God is awake, triggering your next heartbeat, keeping you alive as your heart pumps oxygenated blood throughout your body. Think of it: Our own heartbeat and our fragile hold on life should inspire us to join the fishermen as well. ! ! The blessing of throats last Sunday was an extraordinary sacramental event simply because February 3rd, the feast day of St. Blasé, coincided with the Fourth Sunday of Ordinary Time. The next sacramental “event” is the imposition of ashes on Ash Wednesday which begins the privileged season of Lent not that far off. This year take extra care to prepare for the Lenten journey. Spend some time leading up to Ash Wednesday praying about and thinking of ways you will honor the Lenten disciplines of almsgiving, prayer and fasting so that sin may be rooted out of your heart and out of your spirit, and so that you may grow stronger in resisting the temptations of Satan. I along with others are spending time leading up to Lent preparing a Lenten Mission experience that hopefully will assist us in deepening our spiritual bond with Christ and with one another so that we may rejoice in living fuller, grace filled lives when Easter comes upon us. But for the time being, may many blessings sustain you. ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Father Bernie ! From the Respect Life Office of the Archdiocese: ! Hundreds have contacted our office to decry New York's Reproductive Health Act. We receive, acknowledge, and compassionately share your sadness and frustration that a law such as this could be passed, and that something so horrific could be !celebrated. !! ! We would like to offer you a very simple way to let your legislator know how you feel. As there are many more life issues expected to be on the floor this term the next being physician assisted suicide your voice is important .! !
