*See web page for athletic schedules and dates National Honor Society The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to recognize those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921.Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in NHS activities. NHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. territories, and Canada. The Carl T. Feelhaver chapter of NHS carries out several projects and events throughout the school year, such as a meet & greet with foreign exchange students, selling cross country programs, the Pennies for Patients fundraiser, the Giving Tree, and assists LifeServe blood donation center with winter and spring blood drives. Even during this pandemic year, our chapter was still able to assist with the Virtual Giving Tree and Angel Tags, ring bells for the Salvation Army, and assisted with the FDSH winter blood drive. Requirements for selection to NHS: Be at least a junior, meet minimum standards regarding GPA (3.5), have a low number of attendance infractions, have taken or will be taking academically challenging courses, have preferably been involved in a variety of activities and had or attempted to take on leadership positions or lead by example roles, and are recommended and approved by the faculty of FDSH. FDSH Holds Academic Award Night: Recognizes 106 Students for Academic Achievement Fort Dodge Senior High held an Academic Award Night on Monday, Jan- uary 18, to recognize students for outstanding academic achievement. The Academic Letter program recognizes students who have earned a 3.5 or higher grade point average for two consecutive terms. The first time students achieve this accomplishment they receive the Academic Letter and each additional time they achieve a 3.5 grade point average for two consecutive terms they receive a bar to put on their letters. FDSH honored 44 students with their Academic Letter at this event. FDSH Large Group Speech Team Successful at District Competition Fort Dodge Senior High students prepared 15 entries for the High School Speech Association District Large Group Speech Contest. Fourteen Fort Dodge Senior High speech groups received Division I ratings and will move on to the State Large Group Speech Contest on February 6.
