Hypatia (Hy-pay-sha) was a , mathematician, and astronomer who lived in Alexandria from her birth in about 370 A.D. until her death by assassination in 415. She was the leader of the Neoplatonic School in Alexandria and was famous as an eloquent and inspiring teacher. The journal is named in her honor, as a reminder of the long history of women in . The journal was the brainchild of women who participated in meetings of the Society for , in the United States, in the 1970s. Many of these women were the very fi rst women in their departments. It arose in response to a situation of blatant discrimination against women and their philosophical works in the discipline, in publishing, employment, citational practices and public recognition. It became an independent journal in 1986. In the time since then, Hypatia has been a home for feminist , a resource for those teaching and writing , and a source of professional legitimation and recognition for feminist thinkers. In a trajectory that is on-going, and central to the journal’s commitments, its reach has broadened to an international and more diverse constituency, and it has become more interdisciplinary, stretching the rigid boundaries that have too often limited philosophical thought. Hypatia aspires to encourage and communicate many different kinds of feminist philosophy, and to challenge feminist thinkers to reckon with and resist historical and structural injustice in the discipline, in the academy more broadly, and in the world.
