PUGH Cheshire Rugby Football Union A MESSAGE FROM THE PRES IDENT On behalf of the Cheshire RFU 1w ould like to warmly welcome President John Reid, players, Committee and supporters of Northumberland to Winnington Park Rugby Club for our only home game in the first round of the 1999/2000 Tetley Bitter County Championship, in the Centenary Year of the County Championship. The Winnington Park Club have gone to great lengths to stage this game and we fully appreciate the efforts put in by their President and Committee. Our season has again got off to an excellent start wi th a winning and spirited performance against North Wales followed by a convincing win over a strong Warwickshire side at Coventry last Monday by 28 points to 5. Cheshire go into this game with great hopes of continuing our winning form, however, we have the upmost respect for Ihis Northumberland side, over whom we had a narrow victory at Chester last year, coming from behind in the last quarter. Their team is largely based on the Tynedale and Alnwick Clubs and proved successful in their match against Lancashire 22- 15 last Monday, who we meet at Va le of Lune next Saturday 6th May. Our match officiais today are Referee Ralph Francis, North Midlands Society and Touchjudges Colin McDonald and Steve Barr both from the Staffordshire Society, 1 hope you ail enjoy the day and the hospitality afterwards. Thanks also go to Denis Palin Sports for their continued kit sponsorship. Prior to the match, Cheshire are holding a lunch in memory of Walter Gott, who gave a lifetime of service to Cheshire, Birkenhead Park and the Northern Division and we particularly welcome Paddy and son David to todays events. Dave Wright, President, Cheshire Rugby Football Union Cheshire Rugby ~~otball Union

The Walter Gott Memorial Lunch A few acknowledgements and 'thank-yous' are in order:- (1) If you are reading this at the lunch table, th en thankyou very much indeed for supporting us; this support is greatly appreciated not only by the County but also by Walters family. (ii) To Mick McCafferty and ail his helpers at the Winnington Park Club, thank you for putting on what 1 know will be/is/has been a splendid affair. Our thanks also go to them for looking alter ail the other arrangements involved in staging this game. (iii) To those of you from Northumberland, welcome-again! We hope you enjoy most of your day!! (iv) To Paddy and David Gott, we are delighted to have you with us. We realize that you may have mixed feelings-but we do hope you enjoy yourselves. (v) To David and Jean Duckham, welcome and thank-you for giving up your time to be with us. We know that what you will say, or have said already, will be both entertaining and thought provoking.

Finally, as we ail know, this lunchis in honour to the memory of Walter Gott, the founder of these 'affairs'. He did so much for Rugby Football, "at ail levels, Birkenhead Park, Cheshire and North. He was one of those folk, whom Twickenham and the Professional game appear to have' forgotten: hopefully, only temporarily. Without the likes of Walter, there would be no game: it is as simple as that. We salute his memory. Graeme Marrs
