01303 278137 COLLECTIONS Jan 2015 Issue 7 COMPENDIUM COLC07 We are now through our stocktake and started the new year with all the collections we could not touch while we were counting. So in the rush to get a list to you this month’s is a mini special edition, if it went to our normal 12 pages it may have taken another month to get out and my desk is already surrounded with boxes. As a sneak preview I have also included some collections which will be in the next cover lover, this is a text only list, but it gives you a chance to buy three weeks before anyone else, if you think they might be of interest give me a call and I can go through them with you. COL1140A £350 £70 per month over 5 month 1972 Daily Express Trophy Air Race, set of 40 covers including Prince William of Gloucester and John Noakes, very rare signed. We believe there was only ever 12 signed sets, and this is only the second time we have had one to offer. These more modern flown covers are harder to find than many people realise. £25 per month COL1932 £175 over 7 month Traditional 7 volume thematic stamp collection, lovingly written up, themes include Flags, Drugs, Lister, The Zoo, Argentina, English Monarchs and Cathedrals. We bought this with a larger FDC collection and must have taken years to write up and illustrate, many hours enjoyment during the 1960s. The problem is it does not fit in with what we do, so can you give it a good home, you will not be disappointed. COL1935 £250 33 sets of maxi-cards (1966 - 1973), most with connected postmarks and seem to be in good condition, a great PHQ card forerunner collection. We are rarely able to offer complete lots of these, this lot has been with the same collector since they were collected as new issues, not to be missed. COL1934 £75 £50 per month Collection of 8 handwritten covers (only one illustrated) postmarked with the Little Rissington RAF CDS includes the 1965 over 5 month Battle of Britain, would fit into a postmark collector’s or RAF collection very well. Great lot from a specialist RAF collector and one of those tricky series to find, you see the odd ones here and there, but not normally a collection with so many in. COL1941 £175 RAF Flown First Day covers, 40 different from 1981 - 1986, we think mostly officials and all in good condition. We are big fans of the RFDC series, they should all be £10 plus covers and would retail at £15 - £20 each if they were being issued today. A York Cottage morning envelope from 1910 with an Official Paid cachet, A 1916 Letter COL1948 £200 from the Royal Estate Office paying an account, with envelope and extra 1903 envelope, plus 1921 SS Normandie collection, made up of three covers and four postcards, we think all from Pheasant Delivery label to the Sadler in nearby the 1930s. You normally just see the same cover, so this is an interesting little lot. Snettisham, was this his Christmas gift? We are no experts in Pheasant labels, but we do like this. COL1947 £195 King George V GB stamp study, written up on 18 album pages, includes Wembley issues, 1929 PUC and 1935 Jubilee. Includes cylinder blocks, overprints and notes on various stamps. This is a little out of our field so priced to sell. www.buckinghamcovers.com 3 COL1950 £195 Collection of 175 RAF covers housed in five official COL1949 £200 Operation Overlord collection of six covers and albums. The covers are from various series, mainly unsigned. Individually they one postcard, all signed, plus printouts, includes Piper Millen, Arlette, would take years to find and would cost you between £600 - £700, plus the Major Howard and Jim Wallwork. As you get older you lose more and more of your mates, which I suppose is natural. Talking to George Wood at the funeral, he told me he had two more funerals to go to that afternoon.

Preliminary Thoughts on Women’s Sport in Post- war Britain Joyce Kay University of Stirling On 6 May 1954, in a specially staged and filmed event, Roger Bannister became the first athlete to run a mile in less than four minutes, with the help of ‘pacemakers’. Three weeks later, in a genuine race at the Midland Women’s AAA championships, Diane Leather became the first woman to run the same distance in under five minutes, without pacemaking assistance and without any of the subsequent kudos, hyperbole and world-wide acclaim. Bannister, now Sir Roger, became a sporting legend and the subject of a 150-page special issue of Sport in History in which every conceivable aspect of his feat – its cultural and historical significance, the notion of the record, and issues of image, scientific training and the use of drugs – was dissected and discussed by eight men…and one woman. [1] Who recalls Leather? When current Olympic swimming champion Rebecca Adlington and her team mate Joanne Jackson both swam inside the world record time during the same race in March 2009, they were the first British women to achieve this double since 1956. Adlington had become an instant heroine of sport after her double gold medal triumph in 2008, was voted into third place behind triple Olympic gold medallist Chris Hoy in that year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year contest and was awarded an OBE in the New Year’s Honours list. To help establish that no item of information about legal activity would reveal secrets which would hinder the attempts of any British Athlete to win an international medal. Athletics Biography: Athlete As an athlete John specialised in the 3000 metres steeplechase. He represented Great Britain in two Olympic Games, Munich (1972) and Montreal (1976). He also competed for GB at the European Championships in Rome, and for England at the Commonwealth Games, Christchurch where He just missed out on a medal, placing 4th. In 1976, he was ranked no 1 in Britain with a time of 8:22.83 which still ranks him in the top ten on the all time list in 2010.

Learning about their experiences, trials and tribulations inspires others to strive to achieve greatness in their chosen sport. Politicians and governments also have a duty to encourage new talent to emerge. Between 2003 and 2010, under the last Labour government, the number of secondary school children playing sport for two or more hours a week rose from 20% to 85%. Labour also set up a network of school sports co-ordinators who were responsible for working on an inter-school basis to increase the range and quality of sports available for pupils. In an interview with the Guardian, school sports coordinator, Jo Marston has called these the ‘halcyon days’ on the basis of a previously unseen breadth and depth of competition in school sports. In 2010 Michael Gove abolished the networks of school sports co-ordinators set up by Labour in the face of much outrage from both teachers and athletes.
