“In my first year, I like others signed up for many societies and clubs. I gave a number of them a go for the first few weeks until I had to narrow them down to one. I decided to choose rugby, as I felt, in comparison to football, there was more banter and a better social aspect. Being part of a team is more than just turning up to play. I had three options as to which team to play for: AU, engineers, or Monte. I knew when I picked Monte that they weren’t necessarily the best team, but I was proud to play for my halls. I was sucked in by the Exiles’ traditions, banter and family-style team spirit. As well as qualifying for the cup finals, my favourite moment as captain was when I turned up to my first training session, to find 60 players, a mixture of seniors and freshers, waiting for me. Although it has to be said that was a stressful day!

I find one of the most challenging aspects of my role is balancing the fact that I am captain and need to command and control a large team, alongside still being one of the lads. I try to let my actions show my authority in every decision I make. Every bit of effort I put into the club is for the club’s best interests; I put more time into the team than I do my degree. I hope that next year my team continues to be successful. My advice to the next captain would be to make sure that there is a good recruiting system in place; otherwise you are stuck with limited players or no team at all. Unfortunately this is starting to happen to other teams in the intra mural league which we want to prevent, as it is in many people’s interest for the I.M league to expand next year and not collapse.”

SalouFest 2010: As you may know, there have been a number of negative reports on the behaviour of University students on tour in the Spanish town of Salou. A full report of Southamp- ton’s participation in the tour can be found on p. 21. On the negative press reports, AU President elect, Teddy Wilkes made this comment: Wessex “Upon returning to the UK we found that there had been some very negative press about Saloufest, both in Spain and at home. At first, these reports seemed over-exaggerated and light hearted. However, as the reports continued to trickle in, the image of us as hooligans began to taint the tour experience. It seemed that, although our behaviour was no different to that of many tourists on a city break, the fact that we were British students generated far greater media speculation than was deserved. Every player behaved well on tour which is part of what made it such a successful trip.”
