BACKGROUND OF SWMA
Selangor Waters Management Authority or its acronym, SWMA/LUAS is a one-stop agency for the management of water resources, river basin, water bodies, ground water and coastal waters in the State of SelangorSelangor..
It was es tblihdtablished under the SlSelangor WtWaters Management Authority Enactment 1999 pursuant to the approval of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly on 99AprilApril 19991999..
2 SWMA OBJECTIVES
¾ To ensure the water resources and environmental surrounding is in a manageable and sustainable condition
¾ To undertake the function of planning, research, facilitator, coordinator, operation, enforcement, supervision in the development of an the integrated management of water resources and environment
¾ To provide an environment that is conducive for public and private sector participation in the development, utilization and management of water resources
¾ To create the public awareness and the participation of the public on the importance of water resources

WATER ABSTRACTION CHARGING AND LICENSING
• started on 1 July 2005 for water supply and commercial users. • Parallel to Section 44 (1)a & 59(1)a, LUAS Enactment 1999. The charge rates are RM 0.01/ m3 for water supply and RM 0.05 /m3 for commercial users. • The charge will be used to conserve the water resources and environments.

IMPLEMENTATION FRAMEWORK • ‘Sungai Langat Pollution Control Task Force’ to control and monitor the activity in the river basin that contribute to the pollution, since 2004. Meeting will be held every 2 months. • ‘Sungai Langat Basin Management Committee’- To manage Langat River Basin in integrated and holistic approach with the cooperation from the government agencies, private sector, stakeholders and community. Meeting will be held every 3 months. • SWMA’s Pollution Emission and Discharge Regulation 2010 - pending fee study & vetting by State Legal Advisor’s

13 ALTERNATIVE WATER RESOURCES • ‘Task Force of Alternative Water Resources for Water Supply’ –to identify the suitable lakes, ponds, ex- mining ponds and groundwater to be dldevelop as alternati ve water resources during water crisis /drought.

14 EMERGENCY COMMITTEE FOR WATER RESOURCES POLLUTION
Establishment of ‘Emergency Committee for Water Resources Pollution’ on 8 Oct. 2005. Chaired by YB. EXCO of Infrastructure & Public Utilities and LUAS as secretariat.
The function is to prompt action in case of any pollution occurrence to water sources based on ERP ((gypEmergency Response Plan ).
For example the palm oil spillage from to the nearby river due to an accident at Karak Highway.
