The late Sir Paul Reeves referred to the state of alcohol in New Zealand as one of the most important social issues of our time. Perhaps our upcoming vote in the general election should take into account where the various parties stand on alcohol law reform. Simon Collins, senior reporter on social issues for the NZ Herald, has recently researched the nine main parties for their positions on adopting two fundamental policies to reduce harm from alcohol: a. Raise alcohol prices (excise tax and minimum price) b. Phase out alcohol advertising These are the two most important alcohol reform issues that AANZ is now focussing on with the Call for Action on Alcohol to the incoming government (see below). Here are the findings of Collins’ research, in order of Party support from least to most in three groupings: a. Pricing b. NEW ZEALAND MEDIA OWNERSHIP 2017 AUT’s research center for Journalism, Media and Democracy (JMAD) Merja Myllylahti 4/12/2017 4/12/2017 Summary This JMAD New Zealand media ownership report 2017 reveals a considerable shift in the pattern of New Zealand media ownership. For the first time in seven years, the number of privately/independently owned media outlets exceeded the number of publicly (shareholder) and Crown owned companies. In 2017, there were seven privately owned media companies: BusinessDesk, NBR, The Spinoff, Allied Press, Newsroom, Bauer Media and MediaWorks - five of these were locally owned. Additionally, Scoop was owned by a New Zealand based non-profit charitable trust. The media market maintained some competition as the Commerce Commission ruled against NZME & Fairfax and Sky TV & Vodafone mergers. However, at the time of writing it was not clear how the competitive landscape will evolve. In October, NZME & Fairfax took their fight to the High Court, and that decision was pending when the report was published. In June, Sky TV and Vodafone decided to abandon their merger. The report notes that the digital news market expanded during 2017. There was more available digital news and current affairs content for the public. Yet, at the same time the print newspaper market shrunk with regional and local newspapers reducing staff and publication dates. Commercial television broadcasting showed signs of distress. The Jobs Letter No. 223 4 February 2005 Essential Information on an Essential Issue • The government is investing $27 million in services it hopes will get KEY more people who are long-term unemployed into work. Through a raft of new measures targeting long-term unemployment, the Ministry of TARGETING LONG-TERM Social Development will introduce new wage subsidies, intensive UNEMPLOYMENT case management, home visits, an increased availability of training, PM SKETCHES MAJOR as well as a general expansion of other schemes designed to get WELFARE POLICY CHANGES sickness and invalid beneficiaries back to work. BRASH ON WELFARE People who have been unemployed for over three years make up about VOICES ON BRASH 14% of the total unemployment register of people under the age of 60. Social Development and Employment Minister Steve Maharey estimates 6,400 beneficiaries would be managed through these stepped-up services over the next three-and-a-half years. Maharey: “With unemployment at just 3.8% and employers calling out for workers, the government is stepping up its efforts to get as many beneficiaries DIARY as possible back into the workforce.” Included in the new measures: 12 January 2005 — services for people who have been on the unemployment benefit for over Germany introduces a sharp cut to three years who live in Wellington, Manukau and Northland, where its generous unemployment benefit payouts in an effort to force people nearly half of all the long-term unemployed live. About 1,700 beneficiaries to find work. Many more German will be getting intensive work-readiness training, increased contact beneficiaries are now classified as looking for work.
