Paryavaran Mitra Uttar Pradesh Nomination for Best School Centre for Environment Education Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV), Malihabad, Lucknow Entire school took part in the action project. All enrolled 100 students were involved from class 6-8.
Converted barren land of school in green campus with the help of community.
School has preserved 40 varieties of vegetables and flowering plant seeds.
Bird count conducted in school through competition where 18 types of birds were documented; animals on the campus were also documented by students as science project
Documented total number of plants on the campus total 565 plants
Planted saplings 25 in the campus and 85 plants at students residents

Saving 500 litres by utilizing waste water by using it in irrigation.
Prepared a 10 fit deep pit to collect waste water coming from kitchen, and bathroom by putting polythene lining
Collected water is used for irrigation and sprinkling in the campus
Assessed quantity and type of waste for planning its management
Started with 3 compost pits, in one month 150 kg compost was prepared from 300 kg wet waste. During 3 months period 900 kgs waste was used for preparing 450 kg compost
Also preparing compost from tealeaves separately (prepared 10 kg compost in three months
Total 93 kg Non biodegradable waste generated which is collected and recycled for making various useful products and also selling it to recyclers

Kasturba Gandhi Schools act as bridge schools for dropout girls. It is a residential school which has considered local environmental problems of water, greening, waste management and culture.
School’s effort to involve everyone at school level and community presents a positive example.

Student teams were formed to work on three thematic areas from std 6, 7 & 8.
To begin with students were assembled for a general meeting to understand environmental problems and to find solutions for it.
Action project helped students to enhance their skills like leadership, problem solving, working in team etc.
First project was taken up on waste management focusing on reduce, reuse and recycle.
Students conducted assessment survey in and around campus covering shops, temples, residential area.
Waste was collected and categorized and then ways of reusing them was finalized

Students have adopted hand washing as habit.

Students have prepared a range of best out of waste products which has been displayed at various forums.

Vertical gardening concept introduced as no land was available for plantation
Forest week observed by school where saplings were contributed by students. Total 100 saplings of hibiscus, shatawar, ashwagandha etc. were in pots made from waste bottles, cans and other material.

Energy audit was conducted to find out the per capita consumption of electricity and to take measure to conserve it
