This directory is designed to assist you in locating information pertaining to Missouri institutions of higher education with professional and pre-professional education programs. The institutions listed in this directory have met rigorous standards and are officially approved by the Missouri State Board of Education. The four-year institutions that are included offer complete professional programs from which candidates may be recommended for Missouri certification. The two-year institutions that are included offer approved pre-professional courses, which may be transferred to the four-year institutions and counted as partial fulfillment of the requirements for certification.
Missouri State Board of Education Rule 5CSR 80-805.015, Procedures and Standards for Approval of Professional Education Programs in Missouri, specifies that institutions and professional education programs must be evaluated every five years by an on-site review team composed of public school personnel and educators from other institutions of higher education with Board-approved professional education programs. Based on the report of the evaluation team, and the recommendation of the Commissioner of Education, the Board may approve, provisionally approve, or deny approval to each professional education program.
Missouri State Board of Education approval is granted for a term of five years. However, two-year provisional approval may be granted by the Board when a program does not comply with one or more of the Board's standards, but the institution provides sufficient evidence of plans and resources to comply with the standards within the two-year period. Institutions are prohibited from recommending students for certification from programa that have been denied approval.
