Shortly after the beginning of World War II, the pocket battleship Graf Spee - the most modern and fastest of the German navy - took refuge in after fighting against three English ships in the Río de la Plata. He is a director and director of photography with an extensive international career, with more than 700 commercials for major brands and music videos. He is member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, nominated for an Oscar in 2003 for Best Direction of Photography for Ciudad de Dios. In 1975 he graduated from the Film School (São Paulo) and moved to Europe where he developed as a director of photography in Sweden (Sandal Film). In 1980 he started making documentaries and commercials in Brazil. In the same year he founded and worked as director of the Independent Film Production Company and Social Exhibitor of political films Monte-Video Produçoes. From 1986 and for three and a half years he taught cinematography at the International Film School in Cuba.

Hugo Burel was born in 1951 in Montevideo. A writer, journalist, graphic designer and holder of a Bachelor’s Degree in Humanities, he has won several national and international awards, among which the Juan Rulfo Award granted by Radio Francia Internacional (Paris,1995), the Lengua de Trapo Narrative Award (Madrid, 2001), the Unpublished Book Award granted by the Ministry of Culture and Education (1995) and the Bartolomé Hidalgo Award (2004) stand out.

The top prize for narrative awarded by the aforementioned Ministry was given to him twice for El corredor nocturno (2007) and El desfile sal- vaje (2009). In 2008, he took home the Florencio award for best stage play by a national playwright for La memoria de Borges. In 2009, Buenos Aires, Madrid and Montevideo saw the premiere of the film adaptation of his novel El corredor nocturno, directed by Spain’s Gerardo Herrero and starring Miguel Angel Solá and Leonardo Sbaraglia.

At the University of Salamanca, Italian PHD student Guiseppe Gatti did his thesis on Burel’s work. It was lauded by said University with the Extraordinary PHD Award in December 2011.

In 2014, Burel received the Golden Book from the Uruguayan Book Chamber as the author of the best-selling fiction of the year in Uruguay, for his novel El caso Bonapelch (Alfaguara, 2014)

He has a column on the newspaper El País de Montevideo. Since December 2015, he has been a member of the National Academy of Humanities of Uruguay. He is part of the Spanish Royal Academy as the academic corresponding to Uruguay.
