RE: Approval of 2021 Budget for Minneapolis Downtown Improvement District (DID)

Dear Council President Bender:

Catholic Charities, as a large social service agency and civic impact organization, is a significant downtown Minneapolis property owner, employer and social service provider. Our employees, clients, guests and other stakeholders rely on the vitality and vibrancy of the downtown neighborhood. Catholic Charities is a proud member of the Minneapolis Downtown Council and I am honored to serve on its Board of Directors and the DID Board as well. In addition, my spouse and I are downtown residents and homeowners. I am writing to express my support for DID, and specifically the proposed 2021 Operating Plan and Budget.

As a downtown housing and service provider, headquarters employer, and resident, I believe the work of the DID has never been more important than now. The COVID-19 pandemic, the critical need to pursue racial justice, and the current economic challenges are creating uncertainty about the future of all downtowns. We have the opportunity and the obligation to make our downtown come back better—more just, more vital and vibrant, and more welcoming to all. A strong DID with unequivocal support from the City is a critical element of bringing downtown back better. I urge your support for the 2021 DID budget.

Thank you for your consideration and your public service in this challenging time.

Sincerely,

Tim Marx President and CEO Catholic Charities of St. Paul and Minneapolis c: Mayor Council Member Andrea Jenkins, vice chair Council Member Steve Fletcher Council Member Lisa Goodman Laura Day, Board Chair, DID Steve Cramer, President & CEO, DID

Good morning,

I am writing today in support of the DID and specifically the 2021 Operating Plan and Budget under consideration. As the chair of the Budget and Operations committee, I believe the work plan and the associated budget presented is a comprehensive response to the mission of the DID, which is clean, green and safe. Especially with the challenging environment we find ourselves in today with the pandemic and the social unrest, the DID’s ability to adapt to the changing needs of downtown and serve as a resource to properties and businesses, is something we can all feel proud.

The plan includes partnership initiatives with various organizations to help respond to the challenges of livability and safety, along with creating an welcoming environment ready for the business community when they return after the pandemic restrictions are eased.

I urge you to support the DID 2021 plan as presented. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call me to discuss.

Council President Bender,

I would like to lend my support for the passage of the 2021 budget for the DID. These dollars provided by the downtown business community support a myriad of services, which in actuality benefit all those who work, live, and visit downtown. Professionally managed, and overseen by the Downtown Council, the quality of the DID’s work product has been outstanding. This has been the case since it’s inception.

As a long time downtown property owner with our business headquartered downtown (the Young Quinlan Building) and former Chairman of the Nicollet Mall Advisory Board (now a part of the DID’s responsibilities) as well as being a participant in numerous boards and committees over the years, I have experienced first hand the growth and accompanying vitality that has occurred in our downtown community. Given the unfortunate circumstances that exist today, it’s even more important that the functions performed by the DID be continued on uninterrupted.

Respectfully,

Bob Greenberg
