THORNTON Bilkent University, Ankara E-mail: [email protected] This article evaluates ordination lists preserved in bishops’ registers from late medieval England as evidence for the monastic orders, with special reference to religious houses in the diocese of Worcester, from to . By comparing almost , ordination records collected from registers from Worcester and neighbouring dioceses with ‘conven- tual’ lists, it is concluded that over per cent of monks and canons are not named in the extant ordination lists. Over half of these omissions are arguably due to structural gaps in the surviving ordination lists, but other, non-structural factors may also have contributed. ith the dispersal and destruction of the archives of religious houses following their dissolution in the late s, many docu- W ments that would otherwise facilitate the prosopographical study of the monastic orders in late medieval England and Wales have been irre- trievably lost. The Act for the Civil Registration of Births, Marriages, and Deaths came into operation on ist of July, 1837, which superseded for civil purposes the Old Parochial and Non-Parochial Registers. It has been repeatedly urged that the Registers before that date should, for the purposes of preservation, be transcribed and printed. Many old Parish Registers have been printed by private persons and by the Parish Register Societies, and such work is steadily progressing throughout the country, but very few of the old Non-Parochial Registers, which supply much supplementary matter, have as yet been published. The Parochial Registers of Dudley, which commence in the year 1540, comprise 22 volumes to the year 181 2. There is every likelihood of the transcription and publication of those Registers being undertaken by the Parish Register Society. The Old Non-Parochial Registers of Dudley, here produced, contain over Three Thousand entries of Births, Baptisms, Marriages, Deaths, and Burials of Nonconformists from 1656 to 1837.

All Rights Reserved www.longpull.co.uk INTRODUCTION Well over 40 years ago, I began to notice that the English public house was more than just a building in which people drank. The customers talked and played, held trips and meetings, the licensees had their own stories, and the buildings had experienced many changes. These thoughts spurred me on to find out more. Obviously I had to restrict my field; Black Country pubs became my theme, because that is where I lived and worked. Many of the pubs I remembered from the late 1960’s, when I was legally allowed to drink in them, had disappeared or were in the process of doing so. My plan was to collect any information I could from any sources available. Around that time the Black Country Bugle first appeared; I have never missed an issue, and have found the contents and letters invaluable. I then started to visit the archives of the Black Country boroughs. Directories were another invaluable source for licensees’ names, enabling me to build up lists. The censuses, church registers and licensing minutes for some areas, also were consulted. Newspaper articles provided many items of human interest (eg. inquests, crimes, civic matters, industrial relations), which would be of value not only to a pub historian, but to local and social historians and genealogists alike. With the advances in technology in mind, I decided the opportunity of releasing my entire archive digitally, rather than mere selections as magazine articles or as a book, was too good to miss.

    7.9 Impacts on Water Resources 22/10/2014 Midland Metro 7.9 Impacts on Water Resources 7.9.1 Introduction This section of the ES describes the potential for impacts on water resources to occur during the construction of the scheme. This includes impacts associated with both surface and ground water. Where appropriate, mitigation measures have been developed in order to minimise the potential impact of the scheme. 7.9.2 Assessment Methodology The assessment of impacts on surface and groundwaters has been undertaken based upon existing sources of information. The following sources of information were utilised: water quality data available on the Environment Agency’s website ([16]); Groundwater Vulnerability Map, Sheet 22 (South Staffordshire & East Shropshire); relevant European Community (EC) legislation; Local Environment Agency Plan (LEAP) West Midlands – Tame ([17]) ; Sandwell UDP ([18]); Dudley UDP ([19]); planning policies and Environment Agency (EA) objectives with regard to groundwater; and designated sites of nature conservation importance (local, national and international designations). 7.9.3 Assessment Criteria Local Planning Context The Sandwell UDP states in Policy PC12 that: “in conjunction with the Environment Agency, the Council will oppose development which is likely to lead to a significantly adverse impact on groundwater resources, both in terms of protecting their quality and/or ability to use the resource”. Further, the Plan states that the Council will resist development that poses an unacceptable threat to the quality of surface and groundwaters (Policy PC9), and will ensure that adequate pollution control measures are incorporated into new developments, to reduce the risk of water pollution. Policy EP2 of the First Deposit Dudley UDP that: “proposals will not be permitted where development would harm the water quality or quantity in underground aquifers.
