Septuagesima

This week we begin the pre-Lenten season of Septuagesima. It isn’t yet, but the Church, in her wisdom, wants us to prepare for the Holy Season ahead. It is already focusing our minds by excluding the word ‘’ from the liturgy. Originally it was only said at Easter. Although this Hebrew word means ‘Praise God’ literally, people used it as a word to express their joy in the Lord, even in the time of the Old Testament. The Church sings its last on the Saturday evening before this Sunday, then the word disappears until the Easter Vigil. So our joy is muted, and the wears the penitential colour of violet. Let us use the next few weeks to prepares ourselves for Lent, a time of renewal and retreat for us, a time for ‘spring cleaning’, as far as our souls are concerned. So, what are you going to read, to pray, to give up, to give to others, when Lent comes ?

The Right Rev. Mark Davies Bishop of Shrewsbury J formally welcomed the ICKSP into the heart of the diocese under the patronage of Our Lady Help of Christians, during the Pontifical High Mass last Sunday at the Cathedral, in the presence of Very Rev, Msgr Wach. During his the Bishop urged us all to keep our gaze firmly fixed on Jesus Christ, the Eternal High Priest who is the same yesterday, today and forever.

We thank God for the grace of this blessing and humbly pray that many people will come to understand and love the so that “in the midst of all the possibilities open to us we may be servants of the Grace that draws all men to Christ” (St. Leo the Great. In Nativiate Domini 3)
