Faculty Recognition

Dr. Miriam Singer was awarded the University’s Distinguished Faculty Service Award in Fall 2016. She was also honored by Young Israel Passaic Clifton for service to the community.

Student Activities & Accomplishments

Gabriel Tavarez, an outstanding QUEST student, has been awarded a University College Dean’s Award for 2017.

The School of Education’s student chapter of the NJ Education Association (NJSEA) has been very active this past year. On the Metro campus, the chapter organized many different community service events.

External Grants & Contracts

The Alcoa Foundation and the Bayer Foundation awarded Vicki Cohen funds to support the second year of a two-year project incorporating problem-based units focused on sustainable topics into teachers’ curriculum. The SOE in collaboration with the Institute for Sustainable Enterprise held a very successful two-day workshop in July 2016 with 30 teachers from 10 different school districts attending. Many of the schools had very exciting sustainable projects that they implemented into their classes. The Summer 2017 Workshop is currently being planned.

New Initiatives & Partnerships

SOE has established over 15 new professional partnerships with local schools in the area. These include: Fairmount School in Hackensack, Normanday Park School in Morristown, St. Elizabeth Montessori School in Parsippany, Calabro School in Hoboken, Van Derveer School in Somerville, Jefferson and Washington School in Summit, Whittier School in Teaneck and schools in North Bergen.

Outreach

SOE offered the sixth Summer Teaching Academy (STA), which introduced 15 high school seniors to the world of teaching and its responsibilities. Students participated in hands-on activities in math and science, took a pontoon boat ride on the Hackensack River, and taught a lesson to Camp Discovery students. Approximately 10% of our STA students have applied and been accepted to FDU. The 2017 Summer Teaching Academy is planned for this July.

Ten QUEST students were sent to the Wroxton campus this year to do field placements in local English schools. SOE has partnerships with 7 schools in the area. The program has expanded to include Educational Leadership candidates.

Bryan Meadows and Dan Aronoff will be taking 9 students to Japan in June 2017 as part of the study abroad course, EDUC 3406 Field Experience Global: Japan, which they co-developed.

Bryan Meadows is serving on the Executive Board of NJTESOL/NJBE, the statewide professional organization of ESL and Bilingual K-12 educators. Additionally, he is serving as campus liaison for the NJTESOL/NJBE Bergen/Passaic county chapter, which holds monthly meetings on the FDU Metro campus.

Curriculum Development

The SOE has been busy implementing the edTPA, a performance-based assessment that starting Fall 2017 will be required of all teaching candidates applying for initial certification in the State of New Jersey. Teaching candidates must submit a portfolio to Pearson addressing 15 rubrics, which includes uploading a video of the candidate teaching a lesson to students in a classroom. Pearson scores the assessment and a passing score will be required starting Fall 2018 to obtain certification.

The Preschool-Grade 3 (P-3) Early Childhood initial certification and endorsement for certified teachers had its first cohort of students enrolled this year.

The Bilingual/Bicultural Teacher Education program was approved by the New Jersey Department of Education and had its first cohort class.

SOE is now running the third cohort of the Dual Certification in Elementary Education and Special Education with approximately 30 students in each cohort.

Milestones

The School of Nursing is 65 years old this year. This milestone will be highlighted during the School’s Undergraduate and Graduate Nursing Convocation on May 10 and 11, 2017, respectively.

Accreditations

The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) conducted an accreditation visit for the Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) and the Post-graduate Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner programs in October. The exit interview with the site visitors was positive and they indicated that the programs meet all standards. Additionally, the Joint Radiology Program with Valley Hospital received full accreditation from the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology for a period of 10 years.

External Grants & Contracts

Dr. Teresa Moore received an extension of the Nurse Faculty Loan Program grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (DHHS) for the 2016-2017 academic year. The amount available for distribution to qualified students in the MSN and DNP programs is $850,000.

Outreach

HPBSONAH admitted its third cohort of Florham students to the BSN Program and has begun offering the MSN Program at the Florham campus. In addition, the onsite programs for the RN to BSN and MSN programs continue to be offered for its educational partners: Atlantic Health Systems (Morristown Hospital and Overlook Hospital), Holy Name Medical Center, Hackensack University Medical Center, Englewood Hospital Medical Center and Greystone Psychiatric Hospital.

Center For Dyslexia Studies

The Orton Gillingham Dyslexia Specialist Training course offered by the Center was re-accredited this year by the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Professional Council (IMSLEC). The Center’s program is one of only 24 university programs accredited by the International Dyslexia Association as meeting its Knowledge and Practice Standards for Teachers of Reading.

A total of 301 teachers were enrolled in the program this academic year. The Center offered its nationally accredited program Orton Gillingham Teacher Certificate Program in the Children’s Dyslexia Centers sponsored by the Masons in Burlington, Hasbrouck Heights, Northfield, Scotch Plains and Tenafly. The program was also offered on the Metropolitan campus and in 21 school districts. Talks are underway with several additional school districts for possible implementation next year.

Gail Lavalee Walsh, an adjunct instructor for the Center for Dyslexia Studies, received the award for Outstanding Multisensory Structured Language Education Professional from IMSLEC at their annual meeting in November, 2016.

Several of the Center adjunct faculty provided presentations at the annual meeting of the New Jersey Chapter of the International Dyslexia Association in October 2016.
