  • Cantilena and Antiphon: Music for Marian Services in Late Medieval England
Cantilena and Antiphon: Music for Marian Services in Late Medieval England By Peter M. Lefferts One of the most important contributions to studies of medieval music in recent years was made by Ernest Sanders as editor of volume two of English Music for Mass and Offices (volume XVII in the series Polyphonic Music of the Fourteenth Century).1 Sanders was particularly responsible for the editions of a large proportion of the surviving repertoire of poly phonic cantilenas, a major genre in terms of numbers of pieces and inherent musical value that heretofore has received little attention in the musicological literature, aside from Sanders's own contributions.2 The cantilena holds a place in the fourteeth-century English polyphonic repertoire roughly equivalent to that of the votive antiphon in the fifteenth century, though it is a much less familiar and less widely traveled genre. Stylistically, cantilenas form a complex category of works, but one that has nonetheless a clearly defined core. The archetypal cantilena is a three-voice piece freely composed in three or four large sections, setting regularly versified, double-versicle texts of uniform stanzaic structure in a 1 Editions de L'Oiseau-Lyre has published four volumes of English music in its series Polyphonic Music of the Fourteenth Century (hereinafter "PMFC"). They are as follows: English Music of the Thirteenth and Early Fourteenth Centuries, ed. Ernest H. Sanders, PMFC XIV (Paris and Monaco: Editions de L'Oiseau-Lyre, 1979); Motets of English Provenance, ed. Frank Ll. Harrison, PMFC XV (Paris and Monaco: Editions de L'Oiseau-Lyre, 1980); English Music for Mass and Offices, 2 vols., ed.

Procurator General 7.VII.2004 Introduction When your Procurator General came to Rome more than six years ago, he had to take over the jobs of Procurator General and of Archivist from two confreres, Fr. Modesto Lo´pez of Spain and Fr. Thomas Davitt of Ireland, respectively. The first year was lonely, hard, and challenging because he had to adjust to a new environment, learn three languages at the age of 58, and decode the mysteries of computers and information technology. Thanks to God’s grace and the very supportive and helpful Superior General and the other members of the Curia, he survived those difficult years and was able to serve the provinces, confreres and the Vincentian Family in dozens of small ways.

Brethren, be ye followers of God, as most dear children; and walk to in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath delivered Himself for us, an oblation and a sacrifice to God, for an odor of sweetness. But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not so much as be named among you, as becometh saints; nor obscenity, nor foolish talking, nor scurrility, which is Sunday, to no purpose; but rather giving of thanks: for know ye this, and understand, that no fornicator, nor March 22, unclean, nor covetous person, which is a serving of idols, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

ENGLISH CHANT Resources for Singing the Propers and Ordinary of the Roman Rite Mass in English Presentation by Steven W. Medicis, Director of Music, Saint James Church, Syracuse, New York The Role of Chant in the Roman Rite Liturgy According to the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy (Sacrosanctum Concilium), one of the constitutions of the Second Vatican Council solemnly promulgated by His Holiness Pope Paul VI on December 4, 1963, • 116. The Church acknowledges Gregorian chant as spypecially suited to the Roman liturgy: therefore, other things being equal, it should be given pride of place in liturgical services. But other kinds of sacred music, especially polyphony, are by no means excluded from liturgical celebrations, so long as they accord with the spirit of the liturgical action... • 117. The typical edition of the books of Gregorian chant is to be completed; and a more critical edition is to be prepared of those books already published since the restoration by St. Pius X. It is desirable also that an edition be prepared containing simpler melodies, for use in small churches. The Roman Gradual • The “typical edition” specified in Article 117 is the Roman Gradual (Graduale Romanum), available in hardcopy form from several Catholic publishers of sacred music including CanticaNOVA Publications, GIA Publications, and OCP. • The Roman Gradual is the primary official book of liturgical music for the Roman Rite. • First published in 1908 at the request of Pope Saint Pius X by the Benedictine monks of Abbaye Saint‐Pierre de Solesmes in France and revised in 1974 following the issuance of the Roman Missal (Missale Romanum) of 1970.
