Brighton & Hove Sport and Physical Activity

Being physically active is a really important aspect of health and wellbeing. Active people report feelings of enhanced wellbeing, a sense of achievement, relaxation and release from daily stress; all as a result of moving more. The best way to keep active is to make changes to your lifestyle, finding activities you enjoy, whether it is enjoying a sport, fitness session, walking or travelling by bike.

By working with a wide range of local, regional and national partners, the council’s Sport and Physical Activity Team develop initiatives that support residents to become more active to improve health and wellbeing. We do everything we can to ensure that our initiatives meet the needs of the city’s diverse communities through the following programmes:

1

• Active Communities – Community programmes and events • Active Schools – School Games and school club links • Active Clubs – Supporting the development of local clubs • Information and Signposting – Includes our A-Z of Sports and Physical activity

Our initiatives include: Active For Life, Healthwalks, Skating initiatives and many more. We also deliver and support a huge range of events across the city and lead on initiatives like the inspirational TAKEPART Festival of Sport and Physical Activity...

3 Healthwalks

Healthwalks is a great way for people of all ages and abilities, including those who have health conditions, to get more active. The walks start at under a mile in length on the flat, to more challenging countryside walks of 3 miles plus. There are regular walks on every day of the week, and a calendar of special one-off walks on everything from hedgehog spotting, to free tours of our local museums and art walks. The award-winning scheme has been providing walks all over the city for over 12 years and has helped thousands of local people to make new friends and improve their physical and mental health. All the walks are led by trained Volunteer Healthwalk Leaders who know the route and help everyone get the best out of their walk. Brighton & Hove Healthwalks is accredited by the national Walking for Health initiative (www.walkingforhealth.org.uk).

Volunteer Healthwalk Leader Team If you’ve got some spare time and would like to get outdoors, get active and meet new people then why not become a Volunteer Healthwalk Leader? You’ll be helping others improve their health and wellbeing, and you’ll learn a lot about the fantastic places to walk in Brighton & Hove. Apply online by following the ‘Volunteer Healthwalk Leader Training’ link: www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/healthwalks or call 01273 292574.

Please note, the average person will walk 1 mile in 20 minutes so you can work out average walk times for each walk according to the mileage shown.

Frequently Asked Questions "Can I just turn up?" Yes, there's no need to book except on a couple of the one-off walks that include museum tours for example. Just introduce yourself to a Volunteer Healthwalk Leader (in green and white uniform) on arrival. "What paperwork do I need to do?" On your first walk aim to arrive ten minutes early and fill out a simple health questionnaire and an anonymous equal opportunities monitoring form. For all subsequent walks you will just need to add your name to the register. "What should I wear on a Healthwalk & do I need to bring anything?" Please wear comfortable shoes and clothing suitable to the weather. Some walk routes are exposed, so also ensure you have a drink and sunscreen with you. "Can I bring my dog?" Yes, well-behaved dogs on a lead are welcome except on the Cemeteries walk as dogs are not allowed in the city's extra-mural cemeteries.

4 How much physical activity should you be doing?

It’s surprisingly easy to get enough exercise to significantly benefit your health and wellbeing. The illustration below shows you what health experts recommend, but the most import thing is to build on what you are doing already and minimise the amount of time you spend sitting. Sedentary behaviour has a negative effect on health and research suggests you should break up bouts of sitting every 30 minutes by getting up and moving – even if it’s just to go and make a cup of tea or do a few stretches! Moderate level activity is any which raises your heartbeat, makes you breathe a bit faster, feel a bit warmer, but where you can still talk comfortably.

Age Amount Benefits 60 minutes Of moderate to • Healthy weight CHILDREN & YOUNG vigorous activity at least daily, and including exercise • Flexibility PEOPLE that strengthens bones and • Prevent diabetes & muscles. cancer 30 minutes 5 or more days a • Reduce stress ADULTS week of moderate intensity activity • Make new friends 30 minutes 5 or more days a • Halve risk of heart week of moderate intensity attack & stroke OLDER PEOPLE activity, including exercise • Improved energy that helps with balance and co-ordination.

Brighton & Hove School Games

The School Games initiative is a unique opportunity to motivate and inspire millions of young people across the country to take part in more competitive school sport. The School Games are made up of four levels of activity: competition in schools, between schools, and at a county/area level. Since January 2014 over 4,500 young people have participated in School Games Activity, with over 700 Sports Leaders involved in the running of the competitions.

24 Active for Life 10th Anniversary

2015 is a special year for Brighton & Hove City Council’s Active for Life team as it marks ten years since the project started delivering community sports development across the city. From a small scale pilot in Hollingdean in 2005 Active For Life has grown into a city-wide initiative which reaches out to thousands of Brighton & Hove residents every year. In 2014 5000 new people registered to the project and there were a total of 16,000 attendances. This year we will be recognising this success by running our Anniversary Challenge and giving out goodies at each of our community events.

Active For Life Anniversary Ambassadors As part of the anniversary celebrations Active for Life have appointed a team of ambassadors to champion the value of living an active lifestyle and to spread the word about the project.

• Tanya Burbidge – Active For Life Ambassador (Volunteer) Ten years ago Tanya started helping at Manor Road Gym as a volunteer; she then trained up as a Community Sports leader with Active for Life. She eventually became part of the management committee that operates the Gym; all on a voluntary basis! • Lewis Evans – Aged 16 When Lewis first started Streetgames cricket he was a shy boy but had a real passion for sport. He has since grown into a confident young person with a great attitude to life. He is on the Bevendean Youth Council and contributes to community projects; a great ambassador for Active For Life. .
