November 3, 2017 Mr. Rob Manfred Commissioner, Major League Baseball 245 Park Avenue, 31st Floor New York, NY 10167 Dear Commissioner Manfred: As Chair of the California Asian Pacific Islander (API) Legislative Caucus, I am writing to express my anger and disappointment about the way Major League Baseball (MLB) addressed the racist gesture and insult Yuli Gurriel of the Houston Astros made toward Yu Darvish, who is Iranian-Japanese, of the Los Angeles Dodgers during Game 3 of the World Series. After hitting a home run off of Darvish, Gurriel pulled at the corner of his eyes to stretch them into “slanted eyes”. Gurriel also called Darvish “Chinito,” a Spanish word widely-regarded as offensive and insulting to Asian Americans. This behavior was caught on camera and seen by millions of television viewers worldwide, including impressionable children who look up to their teams and sports heroes. In spite of public outrage, the MLB made the decision to allow Gurriel to continue playing in the World Series and delay imposition of disciplinary action until the 2018 regular season—a full five months into the distant future—when he would be suspended for five games. The lack of immediate consequences and accountability shows that the MLB does not take racial insensitivity seriously and that offenses like this can be repeated without severe repercussions. In rendering its decision, the MLB purported to take into account the negative impact that an immediate suspension would likely have on Gurriel’s teammates. But the MLB did not take into consideration the deep hurt this patently offensive act inflicted on Asian Americans and others throughout the nation.

Relevant Rhetoric, Vol. 12 (2021): How Scansis Functions How Scansis Functions: Lessons from the Houston Astros Sign-Stealing Crisis Karen L. Hartman LeAnne W. Woods Associate Professor Graduate Student Idaho State University Idaho State University [email protected] [email protected] Relevant Rhetoric, Vol. 12 (2021): How Scansis Functions On January 13, 2020 Major League Baseball (MLB) Commissioner, Robert D. Manfred Jr., released investigation findings confirming that the Houston Astros illegally used a video camera system to electronically steal signs during the 2017 regular season and postseason, in which they won the World Series, and early in the 2018 regular season. The findings exposed what has been referred to as “one of the biggest scandals in Major League Baseball history.”1 MLB eventually fined the organization $5 million and the Astros were forced to forfeit their first and second round draft picks in 2020 and 2021. The team’s owner, Jim Crane, also fired the general manager, Jeff Luhnow, and manager, A. J. Hinch. In this paper we analyze Major League Baseball’s Houston Astros organizational rhetoric and crisis response efforts after the organization was found guilty of cheating. Analysis spans from the beginning of the crisis on November 12, 2019 through March 12, 2020 and items analyzed include two Houston Astro press conferences and news stories published across 20 media outlets. By viewing the crisis as a “scansis,” a unique type of crisis and scandal characterized by moral outrage, the authors hope to further the

Summary: The purpose of this paper is to highlight the importance of the Spanish language and the remarkable contribution to Major League Baseball by Spanish- American players. Keywords: baseball, sports, Major League Baseball, Spanish, Latinos Introduction The purpose of this paper is to highlight the remarkable contribution made to Major League Baseball (MLB) by players from Spanish America both in terms of © Clara González Tosat Hispanic Digital Newspapers in the United States Informes del Observatorio / Observatorio Reports. 016-12/2015EN ISSN: 2373-874X (online) doi: 10.15427/OR016-12/2015EN Instituto Cervantes at FAS - Harvard University © Instituto Cervantes at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences of Harvard University quantity and quality.1 The central idea is that the significant and valuable Spanish-American presence in the sports arena has a very positive impact on the collective psyche of the immigrant community to which these athletes belong. Moreover, this impact extends beyond the limited context of sport since, in addition to the obvious economic benefits for many families, it enhances the image of the Spanish-speaking community in the United States. At the level of language, contact allows English to influence Spanish, especially in the area of vocabulary, which Spanish assimilates and adapts according to its own peculiar structures. Baseball, which was invented in the United States during the first half of the nineteenth century, was introduced into Spanish America about thirty or forty years later.

October 28, 2017 For Immediate Release: Contact: Jerome Parra, (916) 319-2018, [email protected] CA Asian and Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus Condemns Racist Gesture Made During World Series Game and MLB punishment Sacramento – Assemblymember Rob Bonta, Chair of the California Asian Pacific Islander (API) Legislative Caucus, issued the following statement in response to Major League Baseball’s decision to delay punishing Houston Astros’ first baseman Yuli Gurriel for making a racist gesture during Game 3 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. “During Game 3 of the World Series, Houston Astros player Yuli Gurriel pulled at the corner of his eyes to stretch them into ‘slanted eyes’ after hitting a home run off of Los Angeles Pitcher Yu Darvish, a player of Iranian-Japanese descent. This offensive gesture was seen by millions of people and has no place in sports or in society at large. It was particularly hurtful to Asian American communities who are the targets of these racist acts. We fully condemn this act and expect better sportsmanship from professional athletes. “We are also deeply disappointed in Major League Baseball’s decision to delay the 5-game suspension until next season. This minimizes the punishment and raises the question of whether MLB takes this offense seriously. Suspending Gurriel during the World Series would leave no doubt that this behavior carries serious consequences and will not be tolerated.” The California Asian Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus represents and advocates for the interests of the diverse API communities throughout California. It seeks to increase Asian Pacific Islander participation and representation in all levels of government.
