WORKING PARTY ‘In order to save on expensive cleaning and maintenance, we hold a monthly working party on a Saturday morning starting at 09.30. Together we clean and tidy the church, do a bit of necessary DIY or gardening, have a coffee and often some home-made goodies – and finish by about 11.30. We are enormously grateful to the few loyal helpers who turn up month after month – but we desperately need a few more. Please consider putting the dates into your diary and coming along. All are welcome – if you can do basic DIY please let us know in advance so that the churchwardens can plan jobs in advance. Working party is almost always on the second Saturday of each month… NOTE the next one will be on 12 August at 9.30. See you there, Sue

Good food, good company and an evening of good entertainment with members of Christ Church and friends organised by David Williams

Christ Church Milton-Next-Gravesend Page 12 August 2017 Christ Church Milton-Next-Gravesend Page 13 August 2017 CORNERKIDS Peter’s Story

Jesus had told Peter to take care of his friends. And he did. Peter took care of Jesus’ special friends and his new friends, too. They were making more friends for Jesus every day in the city of Jerusalem! It was very exciting. They were like one big happy family. They had meals together. They said prayers together. And they learned all about Jesus. The ones who were rich helped the ones who were poor. They shared everything they had. And God’s Special Helper was with them all. It was like having Jesus always there, just as he’d promised.

Jesus’ enemies wanted to stop Peter talking about him. But Peter wouldn’t stop. He just went on telling people about Jesus. So they put him in prison.

But in the night, God sent an angel to set Peter free. His friends were so surprised to see him! They asked God to help them all be brave and go on telling people about Jesus. And God did make them brave. He wanted them to tell everyone in the world. At first Peter thought God meant his own people – the Jews. God had to send him a special dream, to show that he really meant everyone. That same day, three men came to the door: Knock! Knock! “Captain Cornelius says, please will you come to his house,” the men said. Captain Cornelius was a soldier from Rome. But he loved God. And God had told him to invite Peter home. God wanted Peter to tell Captain Cornelius and all his friends about Jesus. So Peter told them everything, from the beginning right up to the dreadful day when Jesus died on a cross.

“But God brought Jesus back to life,” Peter said joyfully. “So now, you can be his friends too, just like us, if you want.”

And right away, God sent his Special Helper to be with these new friends. Just to show that he really does love everyone in the world.

PEACE CANDLE IN REMEMBRANCE OF THOSE THAT WENT BEFORE

You may well have seen the ‘Peace Candle’ that was used at the WW1 commemoration service on 4th• August, 2014 now in the sanctuary.• The candle will remain in place throughout the 4 years of commemoration and will be lit at each Sunday and Wednesday service, as a reminder to us all to pray for peace in the many areas of conflict throughout the world.• When you see the candle, please remember to pray for those caught up in conflict.

The sign near to the candle records the areas of conflict most in our prayers at any given time (though there are other ‘hidden’ conflicts that rarely appear on our televisions).

If you would like an area of the world added to the list, please speak to Revs Sue or Jacqueline.
