Gillet Taylor, descendant, married Julia Cooper. After their marriage they lived with Susannah at her house and shop in Wisbech Road. He was employed by Thomas Peacock, a local farmer, whose son, Thomas, founded Hope Brothers factory in Littleport. His next place of employment was for Mr. Arthur Bell, Farmer of Camel Road. Whilst working here, Gillet and Julia found their first house at City Road. He is remembered whilst working for Mr. Bell, as being in charge of an Entire horse. These magnificent animals were taken to farms for stud purposes. Led by the groom, they were regularly seen going through the streets of Littleport, their coats gleamed like silk, mane, tail and feet were brushed and combed to perfection, this was no simple or easy task to produce an animal in this condition. Neither was it easy to manage the entire horse, being of pure pedigree, they were very spirited and dangerous animals. Later the family moved to Head Fen Farm, Pymoor, where Gillet was employed as Farm Foreman, to a Mr. Frank Coy who also farmed St. John's farm, Ely and Church Farm, Chettisham. He also owned Threshing Tackles, which were taken from farm to farm to thresh the corn for the farmers, which 6 The "Taylors " of Littleport, Isle of Ely, Cambs in those days was put into stacks. Working on Mr. Coy's farm was truly unbelievable, food was plentiful, eggs, butter and even a barrel of beer each week. But all good things must come to an end, the farm was sold to a Mr. Tabez Martin, the food and beer stopped and in Gillet's words "It was like moving from heaven to hell". He worked at this farm until moving to Willow Farm, also owned by Mr. Martin who he worked for until he retired at the age of 64. After he retired, they moved to New Barns Road, Ely. Their last move was to Back Lane, Ely, where Gillet died.

Julia, daughter of James Cooper, Basket Maker of Stuntney, and Hannah Crick of Southery (who were married at Ely Holy Trinity Church on November 6th 1861) was born on October 20th 1869 and baptized October 15th 1871, Julia and Gillet's first child, Ethel, was born whilst they lived with Susannah at Wisbech Road, Littleport. Their next home at City Road was where their son, Jack, was born. They had a large family, 9 in all, losing Emma Louise in infancy. They moved to Back Lane. This house was small, consisting of 2 bedrooms, 2 rooms downstairs and a lean-to washouse. The bedrooms were shared the best they could. At one time, Dorothy, Mabel and Jack were ill with Diptheria and William with Scarlet Fever, Dr. Evans, the local practitioner, was able to tend all four at the same time. Julia took in washing for Dr. Henly, Reverend Eagle Rogers, and Mr. Davies, Clockmaker and Jeweller. The children's duties were to collect and deliver the washing when finished, under strict orders to keep it wrapped, neat and folded. Another source of income was the sewing of shirt collars and buttonholes for Hope Brothers Factory, a job which many women in Littleport did to supplement their income which was not very large. Housing conditions improved after Julia was approached by her landlord and asked if she would have any objection to 2 new houses being built on her garden to which she replied "No, providing her family could occupy one of them". This was agreed. After a while living here, the family moved to Pymoor, while working for Tabez Martin, at Willow Farm, Julia made butter and delivered it by horse and cart to Ethelreda House, Ely, the home of Mr. and Mrs. Martin. Tending to the poultry was another of her tasks. On her husband's retirement they moved to Ely and after his death, she
7 The "Taylors " of Littleport, Isle of Ely, Cambs spent the remaining years of her life in the Almshouses, St. Mary St. Ely. Proud and independent to the end, she called her children to her and gave them their legacy, two pounds to each of them. The amount she gave them was of no importance, it was the love she had for her children. To have saved the amount she did must have deprived her of some of the pleasures of life but she was determined they should each have their inheritance. She also informed them that she had the gown and stockings in which she wished to be buried. Also the money for her funeral expenses. A truly remarkable lady.

Jack Taylor (descendant). Backhouse Boy, Smallholder, Higgler, Coal Merchant and Farmer. As a child his first job was as Backhouse Boy to the Martins in Littleport, Farmers. This was in the morning before he attended school. His duties consisted of cleaning the boots and shoes of the family, the cutlery, and the fetching of coal into the house for the fires. Many years have passed since that first employment and he still talks with great affection for the Martins. During the 1914-18 World War, when the men were away fighting, he drove a Threshing Tackle, whilst the family were working for Mr. Coy of Pymoor, threshing several stacks some of which were placed in 2 rows, enabling the tackle to complete the two before moving. While working on a farm he was injured by a potato spinner, cutting his leg badly. He was taken to the Doctor by Julia by horse and cart. He first saw Caroline Golding while at school in Pymoor and when a young man, he fell in love with and married her. A little house in Oxlode was their first home, this house was leased by Caroline's Father, Albert Golding. It was as they remarked a one storey house, consisting of 1 bedroom, 1 livingroom, a kitchen and dairy combined. After a year, they hired a smallholding at Straight Furlong, Pymoor, from Sidney Webb (Caroline's Grandfather) consisting of a house and 4 acres of land. It was here that Norman, Pearl and Betty were born. Purchasing off cuts of wood from the Railway, Jack started making chicken coops, shafts for carts, painting carts and dealing in general. Here started the career of the Higgler, which were some of the happiest days of his life. Caroline visited the local stores Bargo's and bought 4 cups, the newspaper they were wrapped in was their reading material, having no daily newspaper.
Reading these papers, they noticed an advertisement from a Mr. J. Taylor of Leicester, requiring mangolds. Having set one of the 4 acres on his
14 The "Taylors " of Littleport, Isle of Ely, Cambs smallholding with mangolds, he wrote to Mr. Taylor and a sale was concluded at 11/- per ton (55p.). Top of their list of requirements was a horse and they strove hard to get one but failed the first year. However, the next year saw the arrival of Jockey their first horse, costing the princely sum of 20 pounds, a great deal of money. Chickens were also reared and fattened. Indians, wearing hats not turbans as is customary now, would call at the farms and buy the fattest, which they would immediately bleed to death as was their custom. Drinking water was kept in tanks and during the hot summer months, when there was a shortage of water, Jack would cycle to Pymoor to the water pump, equipped with a pair of yokes and 2 pails, arriving home with some, if not all, the water he started with. To call a doctor one had to walk or cycle to Ely along the droves, and the doctor would call on his rounds. In the winter of 1935, the family moved to the "Woodlands", Pymoor Siding. He took a Coal Merchants business, also selling meal and corn for pigs and chickens as practically every household had a pig and a few chickens. Cobbler and Barber were two more of his accomplishments. At one time, he extracted a tooth for a neighbour. This was one job he wasn't called upon to repeat. Anthony, June, Mary, Trevor and Basil were all born at the Woodlands where Jack and Caroline live to this present day (1981). It is hard to imagine any person seeing more changes in one lifetime than Jack has seen. Five Monarchs have reigned, air travel was in its infancy, since then man has flown to the moon, landed and walked on it, then returned to earth. The railways reached their peak with steam and have declined. Two World Wars. But perhaps the biggest change was seen in his own profession, farming.Potatoes were planted by gangs of women carrying cobs (baskets) full of potatoes. They would set them in ridges, drawn out by a man and his horse, manure was thrown over the land by men with baths tied to hang in front of them and 2 saucers to distribute the manure as they walked down the field. They were picked by gangs of women. Now potato setters are machines, one man with tractor and setter is able to set 15 acres per day on his own. Harvesting the potatoes is also done by machines. Corn, when ripe, was mowed by man and scythe, tied with ropes made of straw, stacked in the field to dry, then carted to the stacks to await threshing. Now machines do the work in two operations. All the work with sugar beet is done by machine, women were to be seen singling and hoeing beet after the men had chcopped it out. Now space drilling and spraying eliminate all the labour. One would never have believed that all this could have been possible in

Jack's lifetime. Since his start as Backhouse Boy, progressing to Farmer, Jack Taylor has added a stout branch to the Family Tree. The preceding pages have dealt with his childhood, his work and career. To conclude, as a husband and father, he has since his marriage devoted every moment of his life to his wife and family. As a husband and father, he is as loved by his wife and children as they are by him. No higher accolade could be asked or given.

On March 21st 1908 Caroline, daughter of Albert and Alice Golding (nee Webb) was born at 100 Foot Bank, Oxlode. When still a small child, the family moved to a house, later called Powers house . This consisted of two bedrooms and two small lean-to sloping rooms, two rooms downstairs and a small kitchen. This house was at one period the home of 2 families, how they managed in these cramped conditions, one cannot imagine. This house, incidently, was the first home of her daughter, BettyCleveland, and her husband. While Caroline was still at school her parents took Phoenix Farm, now a derelict shell, this house was at one time a lovely residence, consisting of five bedrooms, a large landing with a turning staircase with a mahogany banister, dining room, sitting room, kitchen, schoolroom and washouse with a well and pump. The toilet was very unique. It was situated in a large brick outbuilding, the walls were covered by wallpaper, with a skirting board but by far the most unusual feature was that it contained three seats varying in size from large to small in one row. A maid was employed but on leaving school Caroline helped in the house so the maid was dismissed, her sister, Allwyn, and her brothers, Claude, Gordon and Sidney, were all born at Phoenix, also living with the family was Richard Golding, Grandfather. Caroline, a very beautiful girl, was always well dressed, her clothes were from Harveys of Ely. Always keen to keep abreast of fashion, this was first noted when the 'bob' was introduced. This was to re-style the hair from long to short. Her cousin, Hetty, was the pioneer of this fashion at Pymoor. Caroline asked her parents for permission to follow suit but it was refused, but persistent badgering by her Father, resulted in her getting her hair cut much quicker than she thought. Albert her Father, turned barber and cut it himself with the family scissors. Peace and tranquility returned to the house
16 The "Taylors " of Littleport, Isle of Ely, Cambs and Caroline kept in fashion. After her marriage, she helped Jack on the smallholding. Motor cycle riding was one of Caroline's accomplishments, getting assistance to start the machine she would proceed to Ely to get the family shopping. Keeping the engine running, she would hand her list to the staff of the shops, await their fulfillment, then return home. Being ambitious she attempted to ride Mr Steven's motor cycle, which was much more powerful then the one she was used to. The result was a crash into the railway siding bridge, injuring herself and ending the motor cycle episode rather abruptly. One often wonders if she recalls these days when she sees and hears her children and grandchildren on and in their machines. Of her kin, the most like her in motor cycle riding and tomboyishness is Mandy, her granddaughter. Caroline has always taken great pleasure in her home and garden, and is never happier than with her husband and children. She has always been an excellent cook, imparting this knowledge to her daughters, with the exception of her cream horns and trifle which, try as they may, they cannot equal. Now aged 74 in the year 1981 and not able to move as freely now owing to arthritis, her looks still belie her years. A loving, hardworking wife and mother, who is loved and cherished by her husband and family.

Most of the information up to the mid-nineteen eighties was researched and written by my cousin Betty ( nee Taylor ) and Ron Cleveland ( her husband ) and is published by them in another seperate book. The Cleveland book on the Taylor History should be read by all who are "Taylor " oriented and are interested in the very many intricate details that they found. I have included a considerable number of further Taylor names which have been supplied to me by other offshoots of the Taylor family. Susan Hanah Taylor, my mother, was born of Gillet Taylor ( 1867-- 1944 ) and Julia Cooper (1869 --1961 ) in 1905 and was a sister to Dorothy Emma , Phyllis, William, Ethel Julia, Florence Maud, George Gillet, Mabel and Jack. James Martin Wilkin was born on Primrose Hill Farm,Pymore, on July 31st 1890 and died in Little Downham on April 24th 1979. He married Susan Hannah Taylor on Dec 27th 1922 and they had three children, Martin John Wilkin, Roger James Wilkin and Mary Kathleen Wilkin. Susan Hannah died in Little Downham on April 16th 1981. James Martin Wilkin was always called Martin. He was born on Primrose Hill Farm and as he grew he worked on the farm together with his father and brother Albert Henry.He was very mechanically inclined and spent a great deal of his time in the farm workshop making equipment and repairing that used every day on the farm. Martin was very interested in getting into Mechanical Engineering type work and leave the farming to his brother Albert Henry but unfortunately Albert died and Martin was the only male remaining to take over the farm. Martin was very interested in cycle racing and was one of the first in the area to own a Motorcycle. He became very reliable in maintaining the engines on motorcycles and when the first war was in progress he enlisted in the Huntingtonshire Motor Cyclists Battalion and took along his "Indian" motor cycle. He was very quickly given the task of repairing and maintaining all the bikes in the Battalion and was respected by all. A transfer from motorcycles to Tanks took Martin to France where he was involved in several battles with the Germans and he was wounded and gassed. While he was in France his brother Albert died of "consumption" After the armistice he returned to Primrose Hill Farm and assisted his dad James Cockle Wilkin with the farm.In 1922 Martin together with his dad purchased the farm from a Miss. Preston and associates who lived in Haddenham. In 1922 Martin married my mother Susan Hannah Taylor and I was born in 1927.I quote from the newspaper when we left in 1938 to give an indication of what Mum and Dad had been involved in .
"With hearty good wishes from a host of friends Mr & Mrs J M Wilkin together with their family last week left Primrose Hill Farm,Oxlode to take up their new residence near Clacton on Sea. Both exceedingly popular, not only in Little Downham, but throughout the surrounding district, Mr & Mrs Wilkin will be greatly missed.In the parish Mr Wilkin held numerous important positions. He was a school manager for Pymore and St Owens School, vice chairman of the Parish Council, chairman of the local branch of the British Legion, President of the Memorial Hall, a member of the Downham Feoffees, President of the Downham Cricket Club, the Swifts Football Club and the Pymore and Oxlode Cricket Club. Of all the clubs he was a generous supporter. Mrs Wilkin also took a prominent part in the social activities of the parish. For several years she was the popular president of the women's section at the Memorial Hall and for some years held the position of hon. treasurer to their Share Out Club. Before leaving she was presented with a

An article about the Little Downham Cricket Club notes " Martin Wilkin ,whose generosity and sportsmanship was of the highest order" and also notes that Martin Wilkin had given them a new pavilion.
I dont remember my grandfather James Cockle Wilkin who died when I was one year old. I do vaguely remember my grandmother Sarah Ann Pearce who died when I was six. My mother used to tell me that my grandfather allways came out after his midday meal dressed up with shiny boots and a clean suit.This tradition was not followed by my father who spent 90% of his time in the workshop. When we moved to Clacton on Sea in 1938, Martin had gone into partnership with his cousin Bertrand Martin Harris(son of Maria) in purchasing Cooks Green Farm in Little Clacton. The farmhouse was rented out as a guesthouse so dad and mum lived in Clacton on Sea and dad traveled about five miles every day to farm Cooks Green. Bertrand Harris did not take part in running the farm. In 1939 Constance Louise Porter,a relative through William Cockle, the brother of Gr Grandmother Elizabeth, died and left Martin a substantial amount of land and a home called "Highfield House" in Hillrow, Nr. Haddenham. Because the war with Germany was making life uncomfortable along the coast Martin decided to move the family to Highfield House, Hillrow that year. Cooks Green Farm was rented to a Mr Johnson and Martin farmed the land left to him by Miss Porter together with the land in Aldreth known as Frog Hall which had previously belonged to his Uncle Harry. This carried on until 1945 when dad sold the land in Aldreth to a Mr Haylock from Sutton and also some of the Hillrow property. Martin and family then moved back to Clacton on Sea. Back in Clacton on Sea there was no farm available because Mr Johnson would not give up his lease on Cooks Green until 1957. My brother Roger was interested in farming so Martin had purchased a few pieces of land in the general area and in 1951-52 they moved from Albany Gardens to a property called "Lazylands" in Tendring. Roger kept a few pigs and farmed a few acres around Lazylands, Tendring and then in 1957 Martin and son Roger went into partnership and farmed Cooks Green. Martin bought out the share of the farm owned by Bertrand Harris and in about 1960 Roger James Wilkin bought the Cooks Green Farm from James Martin Wilkin and continues to farm that land today (1997) . In about 1968-69 Mum and Dad sold Lazylands in Tendring and moved back to Cannon St in Little Downham to be with some of the people they had

MARTIN JOHN WILKIN (1927- )
The writer of this Family History is myself Martin John Wilkin (called John),son of James Martin and Susan Hannah Wilkin and I was born on Dec 30th 1927 at Primrose Hill Farm, Pymoor, Near Ely, Cambs, England. I was born in a small Bungalow built by my father on Primrose Hill Farm and lived there for a few years until the large farmhouse was demolished and a new home constructed and we all moved into the new house. In 1938 Primrose Hill Farm farm was sold to Mr Claud Starling and we moved to Clacton on Sea where my father purchased Cooks Green Farm in Little Clacton in partnership with his cousin Bertrand Harris.Bertrand did not partake in the actual farming and Dad did farm the land untill 1940 when the farm was leased to a Mr Johnson and the family moved back to Haddenham where Dad farmed Frog Hall Farm in Aldreth and also some land in Hillrow , Haddenham which had been left to him by Constance Louisa Porter together with the house we lived in called "Highfield House". In 1945 at the end of the war in Europe we moved back to Clacton on Sea. I attended school in Pymore for five years, the Pathfields School in Clacton on Sea for two years and The Kings' School in Ely at the Cathedral for five years until 1945. In 1945 I attended the Loughborough College of Engineering for three years and graduated in Civil Engineering in 1948. Then I served my National Service in the Royal Engineers until 1950 when I started my working career. I started off my career in Ampthill where I met my wife Doreen.Subsequently I worked for various contractors in Aylsham in Norfolk, Cheltenham in Gloucestershire, Bath in Somerset, Banbury in Oxfordshire and Colchester in Essex. In 1955 I emigrated to Canada and was in Leamington Ontario initially and then moved to Windsor where I still live. In Canada I was initially a supervising Engineer for the Department of

Highways of Ontario constructing major expressway roads between Toronto and Windsor. In 1959 I worked again for Contractors on road and sewer type works and then in 1969 I became the Director of Operations for the Public Works Department in the City of Windsor and retired from that position in 1992 I married Doreen Margaret Sharpe in Leamington, Ontario on December 1st 1956 and we have three daughters Julia Margaret (born 1959), Vicki Carilyn ( born1960 ), and Alison Jane ( born 1964 )

My husband, Martin John Wilkin, has done extensive research to prepare family trees of his family (Wilkin and Taylor) and my family (Sharpe and Crosley). During the research on my side certain events seemed of particular interest to me and I decided to put these into print.. I had always known that my Mother, Hester Margaret, was born in India but now find from further research that my Grandmother, Ella Blanche, was also born in India. Her Father was William Gordon Lynch Cotton. He was a Water Engineer with the Public Works Department in India (see Photographs #1, 2, & 3) . It appears that my Grandmother was sent to England for her education (see Photograph #4 - Prospectus of a boarding school for children whose parents were in India). My Grandfather, Herbert Charles Crosley, was born in England and attended Dulwich College, London (see photograph # 6.of him age 15 when a pupil there). He went to India about 1885. He opened up the Okayti Tea Estate (See Photo #13, 14 &15) in 1889, the same year he married my Grandmother, Ella Cotton. They started off married life in a tent but later photographs show the bungalow (Photograph #17)) also the dining room (Photograph #18 and 19) ) As manager of the Tea Estate my Grandfather was able to give his family a good life My Mother, Hester Margaret, and her two sisters, Ivy and Eileen, and two brothers, were all born at Okayti, Darjeeling. My Grandfather died in 1905 (see Photograph # 26....) and my Grandmother and three daughters returned to England to live at Sandhurst Villas, Ampthill, Bedfordshire, for a short time. I believe, with the death of my Grandfather, finances were low. My Mother was, I think, given secretarial

My Aunt Ivy was quite an accomplished pianist and was encouraged in her music studies by Uncle Jack who provided a piano for her at some stage. She went to a convent school in Belgium, possibly because of her musical interest. She came back from Belgium by a somewhat adventurous route at the beginning of World War I and rejoined her family who were then living in Ealing. She worked at the Bank of England sorting out and dealing with 'dud' bank notes. Aunt Eileen went to a boarding school, St. Annes near Redhill, on the strength of a nomination by the Duchess of Bedford (the "Flying Duchess") who was an old friend of her Mother. Later she went to a domestic training college near Birmingham and then worked as a governess. A tape made in 1976 by Aunt Eileen for her grandsons, Stephen and Robin, is especially interesting and worth listening to as it gives a great insight to the lives of the three sisters in India, especially at Christmastime. The family tree shows that my Mother, Hester Margaret, also had 2 brothers but little is mentioned of them - we believe one died as a baby and the other at the age of two. Most of the photographs of the family in India were probably taken by my Grandmother's brother, Hugh Gordon Cotton, who was the Manager of the Ghatia Tea Estate, Jalpaiguri, Bengal. My Mother must have returned to Ampthill because she met and married my Father, Clement Richard Sharpe, in 1915.

ROGER JAMES WILKIN (1931- )
Roger James Wilkin,son of Martin and Susan,was born on Oct 9th 1931 at Primrose Hill Farm. He subsequently lived in Clacton on Sea,Haddenham and then back to the Clacton on Sea area. He now owns and farms Cooks Green Farm,Little Clacton which is the same one farmed by our father in 1937-1940. Roger married Pamela Barton in 1958 and they have one son named David Roger who works with his father and will eventually take over the farm.In 1989 Roger and David built a new house, Meadow House, on the farm and David now lives in it with his family. David Roger (1959- )married Zoe Elizabeta Elliott on 24th June 1989 and now in 1998 they have two sons, Adam David and Thomas and they are the only males at the moment to carry on the Wilkin name into the future.
