Shaw + Smith
We are pleased and proud to announce that Shaw + Smith will be our feature winery this month!
The larger than life legends of the Adelaide Hills, producers of modern classics, and creators of the famed Sauvignon Blanc (that may as well have turned the words “Sauvignon Blanc” to “Shaw + Smith”).
Shaw + Smith was established in 1989 by cousins Michael Hill Smith MW and Martin Shaw. They make wines exclusively from the Adelaide Hills, from varieties that suit the cooler climate: Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz.
Shaw + Smith own two vineyards, in Lenswood and Balhannah, where “It’s higher, it’s colder, it’s wetter” - this is what really makes these specific areas of the Adelaide Hills stand out.
It is here, in the vineyards, that the initial magic happens. Un-certified organic, the Shaw + Smith approach is geared towards growing the best possible grapes, managing vineyards sustainably, valuing vine health, soil health, and low yields. In the pursuit of quality, all grapes continue to be hand-picked, and the wines are fermented, aged and bottled on site at Balhannah. The wines are vibrant, medium bodied expressions of their varieties that intrinsically reflect their sites and region.

Hailing from Mendoza Argentina, his love for wine brought him here, and love for a woman kept him here; they celebrate their 10 years of Mordrelle & marriage this year! This label (and all of Mordrelle’s wine labels) are created from artworks by Martin’s father, Jose Luis Moran, as an opportunity to celebrate his incredible artistic talent as well as a loving dedication to his memory.

2016 Willi Schaefer Graacher Riesling Feinherb - Mosel, Germany 16 72 If you’re new to all this, there’s a reason these wines are so beloved. Part of it is they’re so scarce; the estate is all of 4.2 hectares with no desire to grow. Part of is the wines themselves; they’re silly delicious. This is a more fruit-driven style of Riesling. Ripe apple and pear dominate initially, but give way to soft meringue-like lime and lemon. It finishes with a poised mineral element that leaves you with a fresh and dry finish, ready for the next sip.

2016 Domaine Comte Abbatucci ‘Gris Imperial’ Rosé 72 - Corsica, France
Wine from Corsica?! Where even is that?! It’s a tiny island in the Mediterranean, classified as one of the 18 regions of France. It once had bountiful vines, all native and unique, then they got wiped out through neglect and abandonment. Almost.
Vigneron Jean-Charles Abbatucci brought Corsica’s indigenous grape varieties back from the brink of extinction. The Domaine Comte Abbatucci Collection wines all come from a single parcel planted by Antoine Abbatucci in the early 1960’s.
At the time, Antoine (Jean-Charles’ father) was president of the Chamber of Agriculture in Corsica, and noticed that the subsistence farming lifestyle of the mountain villages was rapidly disappearing as the villagers left the countryside for the coastal towns. Villages that farmed old vines of indigenous varietals were left abandoned as the population left.
To save these varietals from extinction, Abbatucci took cuttings of each threatened vineyard he came across and planted the cuttings on his estate near Ajaccio, in a single plot of granite soil. By 1962, eighteen different varieties had been planted and Abbatucci saved the day.

2019 CRFT ‘The Schmidt Vineyard’ Mencia - Barossa Valley, SA 16 72 Mencia (pronounced MEN-cee-ah or MEN-thee-ah) is a spicy, earthy grape variety originating from the northwestern corner of Spain, but this wine tells us that it has made a new spiritual home in the heart of Barossa Valley. Medium bodied and deep in colour. Lifted with dark flavours of blackcurrant and pomegranate, loaded with spice of black cardomon and anise.
