Affirmed Networks launches ‘Mobile Network as Service’ offering on Amazon Web Services Tema di grande discussione ma un segno: core network mobili offerte “as a service” su cloud pubblici, fino a qualche anno fa impossibile da pensare

Affirmed Networks announced that its virtualized Evolved Packet Core (vEPC) is now available to mobile operators on Amazon Web Services (AWS). The company calls it the first “Mobile Network as a Service” solution that enables service providers to quickly and economically deliver both 4G and 5G services over a scalable cloud infrastructure without requiring a lot of capital investments. 2

Transatel, a long-time customer of Affirmed Networks, is using the solution to embrace a new breed of business models to serve enterprise and consumers globally. Transatel is a European Mobile Virtual Network Enabler/Aggregator that launched more than 150 MVNOs and built up a M2M connectivity business before entering the IoT space. The vendor says that with vEPC, operators can deliver differentiated services—such as IoT/M2M services, enterprise data services, MVNO wholesale services, 4G and 5G—without costly data center or network infrastructure investments. The cloud offering accelerates an operator’s ability to deliver new services, thereby reducing overall time to market and enabling faster onboarding of subscribers. With AWS’ global reach, that means operators can serve geographies they might not otherwise reach with their own networks. Affirmed Networks, which was named one of FierceTelecom’s top disruptors of 2018, has been one of the leading vendors for NFV and got into the game before NFV was an industry buzzword. Customers include AT&T, Vodafone and SoftBank and its vEPC is used by some 80 customers worldwide. “We were looking to create a disruptive technology for how service providers run their networks in terms of virtualization of the physical functions,” Tiwari told FierceWirelessTech. “We set out to actually do automation.” https://www.fiercewireless.com/wireless/affirmed-networks-launches-mobile-network-as-service- Source: offering-amazon-web-services

Telefonica to test 5G fixed-wireless service in Germany with Samsung Samsung è il convitato di pietra tra i fornitori di rete 5G, ma sta vincendo clienti importanti Telefonica Deutschland announced plans to test a 5G fixed-wireless broadband service in Germany, using equipment from Samsung. Up to 20 households in Hamburg will test the gigabit technology from November over a period of three months. Samsung is supplying equipment using the 26 GHz band, similar to the service just launched by the company with Verizon in the US. The company said the system can enable speeds of "several gigabits per second" over the last mile. Samsung is providing a virtual core and 5G radio access unit as well as 5G outdoor units and indoor routers for the Telefonica customers. Telefonica said the system offers "an attractive alternative to current technologies in Germany". The aim of the trial is to show that households and businesses can be supplied with high-quality gigabit connections for an optimal customer experience without the need for laying fibre-optic cables. To date, Telefonica Deutschland has not entered the fibre market in Germany. The company relies on wholesale access to Deutsche Telekom's VDSL network to provide fixed broadband services. However, amid a shrinking fixed customer base, Telefonica has increasingly focused on the mobile market since its merger with E-Plus in 2014. KT to invest 20B$ in 5G, other services in next five years; 5G, Strand Consult ‘Nella Ue gap di 150 miliardi di euro per le nuove reti’ C’è chi non è costretto a spendere tutto in licenze South Korean operator KT Group has unveiled a plan to invest a total of KRW 23 trillion (approximately USD 20.4 billion) over the next five years in 5G and other innovative technologies. KT has also recently inaugurated the 5G Open Lab at its Research and Development (R&D) center in Seoul, which will promote industrial collaborations with both local and global business partners. The lab is aimed at developing new services using 5G wireless technology. Cloud, IoT, AI, Cybersec Machines to Handle Half of Work Tasks by 2025, Davos Group Says The "Fourth Industrial Revolution" could create 133 million jobs globally, while 75 million workers may be displaced. Machines and automated software will be handling fully half of all workplace tasks within seven years, a new report from the World Economic Forum forecasts. But the group said technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and precision medicine, could create more jobs than they threaten. In a study of executives and specialists across 12 industries, published on Sept. 17, the WEF concluded that this so-called "Fourth Industrial Revolution" could create 133 million jobs globally, while 75 million workers may be displaced. Saadia Zahidi, head of the WEF’s Center for the New Economy and Society, said companies had "a moral and economic imperative" to invest in retraining and continuing education for their employees. "Without proactive approaches, businesses and workers may lose out," she said. The report is the latest in a series of efforts by academics, consultancies and governments to assess the impact of new technologies on employment. Previous studies, including an earlier one by the WEF, have generally forecast automation will destroy more jobs than it creates. The scale of projected displacement varies enormously between research groups, however. A Bank of England study in 2015 produced some of the bleakest figures, forecasting that as many as 80 million jobs in the U.S. and 15 million in the U.K. could be lost by 2035. A McKinsey report in December produced one of the rosier assessments, forecasting jobs lost and created by new technology might be about equal by 2030. In its latest analysis, the WEF said the effects of automation may vary substantially across industries, and predicted job losses to be heaviest in mining, consumer, and information technology companies, and less within professional services firms. Many new jobs may be less secure than in the past, as businesses are increasingly turning to contractors and freelancers, the Swiss foundation said. It warned there’s a significant gap between the skills workers currently have and those that may be required for future new roles. It estimates more than half of employees at large companies would need significant retraining in order to take advantage of new opportunities created by digital technology. But it said half of all companies plan to retrain only for "key roles," and only one-third say they plan any retraining for at-risk workers. Best known for throwing an annual summit of business and government leaders in the Swiss ski resort of Davos, the WEF said it based its forecast on a survey of senior executives, strategy officers and human resource specialists at 300 global companies, spanning 20 different countries. It said these companies represented more than 15 million employees and their economies represented 70% of global GDP. https://www.industryweek.com/technology-and-iiot/machines-handle-half-work-tasks-2025-davos- Source:

Renault-Nissan adopts Android for car infotainment system Sostanzialmente Renault e Nissan accettano un accordo con Google, diversamente da BMW, Mercedes, e passeranno indirettamente i dati dei passeggeri a Google stesso The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi carmaking alliance said on Tuesday it will adopt Alphabet’s Google Android operating system, handing a victory to the US tech giant as it pushes for a bigger share of the infotainment market. Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi, with combined sales of 10.6 million vehicles last year, said future models will “integrate Google applications and services” including Maps and the voice-commanded Google Assistant. The move, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, leans more heavily on Big Tech than large or luxury rival carmakers have hitherto been willing to do. Many fear losing control of customer relationships, data and potentially significant future revenue from connected services. Some smaller manufacturers such as Volvo Cars have decided to embed Android Auto in their vehicles. But the scale of the shift by Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi may cause a broader rethink of costly standalone tech strategies. “Major carmakers earlier were reluctant to do business with Google, but this has now changed,” said Jauke de Jong, a research analyst at AFS Group in Amsterdam. “More carmakers could follow suit and partner with Google.” Until now, carmakers have largely chosen Linux, Microsoft or QNX software to power infotainment. That yields clunkier platforms they can control, but which offer little scope to add new apps or functionality. While many volume carmakers offer infotainment “mirroring” to pair with Apple iPhones or Android , premium rivals such as BMW and Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz are investing heavily in their own operating systems, vocal assistants and connected services. 6

Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi said the new infotainment systems would also be integrated with remote vehicle diagnostics and over-the-air upgrade capabilities, offered via the alliance’s own cloud-based service. Tags: Connected car

Voice technology is useful, in demand, and not moving fast enough Il futuro son le interfacce vocali … ed è un dominio dei soliti 4 Google, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft Innovations in voice technology will drive fundamental changes in consumer behavior in the next three years or less, a new study by AppDynamics reveals. After all, consumers DO want voice technology — even in the bathroom — and businesses need to closely monitor how trends in this sector are driving awareness and demand for voice-driven functionality just to keep up. The report cites a recent ComScore survey that predicts that all web searches will be controlled by voice by 2020. The thinking is that brand experiences, like the custom skills and functionality being pushed hard by companies such as Amazon, Google, and Walmart are pushing voice experiences into everyday activities like shopping and banking that were formerly either web or app-based experiences or even (gasp!) interactions with a real, live person. Despite those errors, nearly half (47 percent) of millennials say they don’t review their voice-to-text commands for accuracy, but when they do, they find errors 67 percent of the time. Listed reasons include taking the wrong route via GPS commands, ordering something they didn’t want, and calling an ex-partner. Tags: AI

Deutsche Telekom, Aricent launch open source mobile edge compute platform Seconda iniziativa di DT sul Edge dopo MobileEdgeX Share to FacebookShare to Twitter Share to Google+Share to LinkedInShare to PrintShare to Email Deutsche Telekom and engineering firm Aricent have taken the wraps off an open source mobile edge compute platform designed to help operators rapidly develop and launch 5G applications and services. According to the companies, the global edge computing market is expected to be worth $3 billion by 2025. In addition to the latency benefits of hosting applications and services at the edge of the network, edge computing – and in particular open source edge computing – lends operators much greater agility and allows them to monetise new 5G services from the outset, they said. "We believe that edge computing will be a critical success factor to achieve the full benefits of 5G for our customers," said Tomasz Gerszberg, SVP Edge Computing, Deutsche Telekom. "And we believe in joining forces with our ecosystem partners to accelerate innovation and the adoption of new technology." "Edge computing will provide value as it will deliver engaging and worthwhile subscriber experiences, and operators need the capabilities to bring that to fruition," said Walid Negm, CTO of Aricent. "We are very excited to be partnering with Deutsche Telekom on this open source initiative. Our innovative solution enables forward looking operators to leverage their network and collaborate with application developers to leapfrog the competition and gain a competitive edge - at the edge." 8

Deutsche Telekom is pushing hard on edge computing, which as well as making services more responsive, promises to make devices lighter and less power- hungry because processing and storage are hosted on the network. At Mobile World Congress this year, the telco launched a new subsidiary, MobiledgeX, which is tasked with providing developers with the tools they need to come up with new applications and services that make the most of edge computing.
