The 1978 23-11 field was named in honor of Ferriss upon his retirement on June 18, 1988. 1979 22-10 1980 17-3 Delta State’s all-time record at Ferriss Field is 992-287-4, and the Statesmen have posted an 452-93 mark 1981 21-6-1 under current head coach Mike Kinnison at the facility. The early renovations still provided the Statesmen fans with 1988 32-8 the comfort, convenience and true baseball atmosphere that Ferriss had envisioned during his coaching 1989 13-5 tenure. Prior to the 1999 season the bleachers were renovated and a new press box was built. 1990 16-5 1991 20-5 Following the 1999 season Kinnison and his staff painted a yellow home run line on the top of the outfield 1992 15-7 fence and a red-brick backstop with netting was added in January of 2000. THE FERRISS LEGACY l Dave “Boo” Ferriss, a member of the Boston Red Sox and Mississippi Sports Halls of Fame, is the patriarch of the Statesman baseball program. During his 26 years as head coach, Ferriss establishbed a lasting legacy of success on the field, in the classroom, and within the community.

The Shaw, Mississippi, native spent 46 years in baseball on the collegiate and professional levels, including 26 seasons at Delta State. A legend in national collegiate baseball coaching circles, Ferriss was inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1988 after compiling a 639-387-8 record at Delta State. At the time, his coaching record ranked among the all-time national leaders at the NCAA Division II level for victories.

When Ferriss took over the baseball program in 1960, he literally had to begin in the dirt. The Statesmen played many of their games off campus due to a lack of a quality facility and Ferriss coached without the benefit of an assistant. Over the next three decades, Ferriss turned the meager program into a national power – directing the Statesmen to the NCAA Division II playoffs in eight of his last 12 years, including three trips to the NCAA Division II championships, where they finished third, second and third respectively in 1977, 1978 and 1982.

Gulf South Conference championships came in 1978, 1979, 1985 and 1988, with the Statesmen finishing second in 1981 and third in 1982. Forty-nine of his players earned All-Gulf South Conference honors and academics were always at the forefront of his teaching style, as 95% of his players went on to earn their degrees.
