Priest Sabbatical - What? Why? When?

A priest's sabbatical might sound like a vacation. But ac- cording to diocesan and the priests who partici- pate, the period of travel, study and reflection involves a great deal more than a break from routine. And parishion- ers benefit, too, they said. Unlike vacation, sick leave and assigned or special stud- ies, sabbaticals are educational or spiritual experienc- es designed to help priests maintain their effective- ness and expertise in ministry. Much like college and university professors who take time off for research and study, priests may choose to step away from parish and diocesan duties to rejuvenate emotionally, spiritually, physically and intellectually. Sabbatical programs are available all over the world and offer resources in spiritual and personal growth and theo- logical knowledge and understanding. Priests choose where to visit based on their interests and the purpose of the sabbatical, but the bishop gives final approval. Priests are required to find coverage for Masses and hearing Con- fessions at their parish while they are away. Sabbaticals provide the opportunity for the priest to step back from the busy activities of his life to focus on what he's doing and why he's doing it and to provide a chance for uninterrupted study and develop either new skills or some new awareness that can enrich his ministry. Each diocese determines the amount of time a sabbatical can be. It is usually based on years of service. In the Rockford Diocese after 15 years of ordination, a 3 month Please advise us as soon as possible if you are planning sabbatical is offered. to travel with us. Deposit $500 due ASAP.
