6 The Bishop of St Albans’ Harvest Appeal 2015 Building Hope

The Bishop’s Harvest Appeal for 2015 will help people across and Bedfordshire to connect with the needs of children with disabilities. The project will help the Anglican Church in Uganda to break new ground as it supports the work of the Diocese of Rukungiri to transform attitudes and provision for disabled chil - dren in Uganda, where having a disability is a serious disadvantage.

Such children are often viewed as “without use” as sometimes they cannot assist their family with work in the fields or look after younger siblings at home. In addition to providing classrooms for the disabled, there is also a need to provide accommodation as the population is spread widely across the countryside. As a result, children’s homes are many miles away from a school on dirt tracks with no public transport available for them to get to school each day.

Collection for the Appeal in Great Gaddesden

There will be a Red Bucket Collection for the Bishop’s Appeal after the church serv - ice on four Sundays starting on Sunday 13th September and ending after our Harvest Festival Service on Sunday 4th October .

Synergy Dacorum: Your Local Advice Services Working Together to Support You A project funded by Big Lottery has brought together 20 local agencies to support all Dacorum resi - dents with specialist advice and support services.

Known as Synergy Dacorum, this integrated service is coordinated by the Dacorum District Citizens Advice Bureau. The project simply means that local residents can get better access to help and advice on a wide range of areas, for example about benefit entitlements, debt advice, housing issues, neighbor disputes, mental health and relationship or addiction problems to name but a few.

Since it was launched at the end of 2013, over 500 local people have been guided through to get the specialist advice and support they need more effectively and quickly and without simply being ‘sign - posted’ and having to repeat their story over again to the different services.

Along with the Dacorum Citizens Advice Bureau the 19 Synergy Dacorum partners are: Carers in Hertfordshire; Dacorum Community Trust; DENS; Volunteer Centre Dacorum; Relate Dacorum, Watford and Three Rivers; Dacorum Family Services; Druglink; Age UK Dacorum; Community Action Dacorum; Mediation Hertfordshire; Herts Mind Network Ltd; Dacorum Borough Council; Dacorum MENCAP; The Salvation Army The Centre in the Park; 4-AM For Arts and Music; Turning Point Housing Link Dacorum; Home-Start Dacorum; and The South Hill Centre.

The Synergy Dacorum project has also had the effect of bringing all of these organisations closer together, raising awareness and strengthening advisers’ knowledge of the excellent range of expertise and support available for people in the local area. Further information and the contact details for each of the organisations participaring in Synergy Dacorum can be found on the website www.syn - ergydacorum.org.uk

All of these organisations are working together to make it easier for people to get good advice when they need it so that people will experience easier access to advice and information;local advice providers working in partnership; getting the right information and advice first time; and a stream - lined, efficient, high quality service.

The Dacorum District Citizens Advice Bureau has offices in Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted. Walk-in sessions and appointments are available at both sites. Evening appointments are available in Hemel Hempstead.

Like all Citizens Advice Bureaux, Dacorum CAB is a registered charity in its own right, working within the policies and the standards of advice provision that are set by the established national Citizens Advice organisation. The Bureau is staffed mainly by volunteers and provides high quality, impartial, independent and confidential advice free of charge to people throughout Dacorum. We respond to each individual’s needs and circumstances regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, race or ethnicity.

The Bureau’s open door ‘drop in’ service where anyone can get tailored face-to-face advice from a trained adviser is a fundamental part of the service. ‘Drop in’ advice is available 4 days a week in either the Hemel Hempstead or Berkhamsted offices. These sessions offer advice on a huge variety of issues – from questions about in- and out-of-work benefits entitlements and managing debt to housing matters, consumer complaints or relationship difficulties, employment issues and discrimi - nation advice. For more information and the contact details for Dacorum CAB see the website www.dacorumcab.org.uk

My ambition is to format the electronic version of the newsletter, which goes to the printers, in a way that can be published on the web - perhaps on the Parish Council’s site (with their agreement) or that of the Friends of the Church. This will enable some of the colour used in the newsletter to be seen and afford backup on those occasions when you can’t find the newsletter anywhere! I don’t know when my plans may come to fruition but this is the first step.

27 Citizens Advice in Hertfordshire: Disability Benefits Project – help for people who may be eligible to claim disability benefits, including home visits

If people have care needs or they have problems getting around, they may be able to claim disability benefits. Under the Disability Benefits Project, the 10 Hertfordshire CABs, supported by Hertfordshire County Council, are providing a special service to help anyone who lives in the County to make sure they do not miss out on the financial support available through these benefits, which include:

• Personal Independence Payments (PIP);

• Disability Living Allowance (DLA);

• Attendance Allowance (AA); and

• Employment Support Allowance (ESA).

The Disabilty Benefits Project also provides help to complete the necessary forms.

This is a free service and, according to the individual’s needs, the appointments can be arranged either in the client’s local bureau or as a home visit, or the advice can be offered over the phone.

For a home visit in Hitchin, Dacorum, Hertsmere, St Albans, Watford, Three Rivers or Welwyn Hatfield, people should call 01707 269255 or email: benefits.hatfieldcab@cab - net.org.uk

For a home visit in North Herts, East Herts, Broxbourne Borough or Stevenage, call 07733 416292 or email: [email protected]

Further information on the Disability Benefits Project can be found on the Hertfordshire Citizens Advice Bureau website www.hertfordshirecab.org.uk Information about the project is also available on the website in Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish and Urdu.
