“ONE OF THESE DAYS I’M GOING TO GET ORGANIZ-IZED”: INSOMNIA AS THE ARRHYTHMIC EXPERIENCE OF MODERNITY CRAIG MEADOWS A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN SOCIAL AND POLITICAL THOUGHT YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO October 2019 © Craig Meadows, 2019 Abstract The proliferation of insomnia and related discourses since the 1970s has produced an expanding moral economy of sleep. The discursive field of sleep has been defined by the production of biological assumptions of the nature of sleep in the sleep sciences, their distribution through clinical modes of hygienic and pharmacological intervention into disturbed sleep, and their popularization in media discourses of risk, suffering and management. My research begins by identifying the situation of sleep as a discursive object in the sleep sciences, which I contrast with experiential representations of insomnia in the film Withnail and I (1987). The purpose is to dislodge insomnia pathology and instead to understand it as an arrhythmic modality. What emerges in this discourse, however, is a romanticized notion of the discordant body unable to integrate to the rhythms of capital. I then examine the role of sleeplessness in the production of white masculine suffering in neoliberal capitalism through Taxi Driver (1976) and Fight Club (1999). In contrast to this privileged form of androcentric insomnia, I then turn to biographical accounts of insomnia by Gayle Greene and Patricia Morrisoe, who narrate the effects of sleeplessness and their gendered movements through consumer culture and clinical spaces in their attempts to restore what they understand to be natural sleep. -

As discussed more fully in the auditor’s report that begins on page 57 of the enclosed agency financial report, we found • the financial statements of SEC and its IPF as of and for the fiscal years ended September 30, 2017, and 2016, are presented fairly, in all material respects, in accordance with U.S. generally accepted accounting principles; • SEC maintained, in all material respects, effective internal control over financial reporting for SEC and for IPF as of September 30, 2017; and • no reportable noncompliance for fiscal year 2017 with provisions of applicable laws, regulations, contracts, and grant agreements we tested. Name ________________________________________ Period _______ Macbeth Informational Text: The Real Story It is interesting to note that Shakespeare‘s play Macbeth was based loosely on true stories about real people. In fact, it is believed that Shakespeare wrote the play for King James I and VI, who was king of both England and Scotland at the time. Allegedly using the Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland (1587) by Raphael Holinshed as his source of information, Shakespeare set out to create a realistic fictional drama based on a true story. The real King Duncan I (Donnchad mac Crínáin), nicknamed ―the sick‖ was the King of Scotland (called Alba) from 1034 to 1040. He was the grandson of Malcolm II, who was killed in battle in 1034. Duncan had two sons, Malcolm III, and Donald III. According to records, Duncan was young and weak and was seen as a terrible and ineffective leader. His ascension to the throne at age 17 caused turmoil in the family, as the kingship was to have alternated between the two branches of the royal line. Many believed his cousin, Macbeth (Mac Bethad mac Findlaích), should have had claim to the throne through his mother. This caused strife in the family, which would continue for hundreds of years. After Duncan was killed in battle by Macbeth in 1040, Macbeth took the throne and became King of Scotland. Macbeth reigned successfully for 17 years, and he was said to be a powerful and strong leader. However, Duncan‘s son Malcolm wanted revenge against Macbeth, and felt that he should have inherited the throne after his father‘s death. -

The Historical Context of Macbeth EXPLORING Shakespeare, 2003 Shakespeare wrote Macbeth sometime between 1605 and 1606, shortly after the ascension of King James of Scotland to the English throne. The new monarch brought Scotland—previously known to the English only as a mysterious, conquered neighbor—into the public limelight. The period of James' reign was further marked by political and religious conflict, much of which focused the kingdom's attention on the danger of regicide. Events in History at the Time of the Play Sources Following the process used in the creation of many of his plays, Shakespeare drew the plot for Macbeth from historical sources—particularly Raphael Holinshed's Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland (1577), the authoritative historical text of the period. Although Holinshed contains the story of Macbeth and Duncan, Shakespeare did not rely on this only; rather, he combined different stories and different versions of the same story to create his drama. The Chronicles include an account of King Malcolm II (reigned 1005-34), whose throne passed first to Duncan I (reigned 1034-40) and then to Macbeth (reigned 1040-57), both of whom were his grandsons. For his portrayal of the murder through which Macbeth took Duncan's throne, Shakespeare mined another vein of the Chronicles—King Duff's death at the hands of one of his retainers, Donwald. In combining the two events, Shakespeare crafted a specific tone for the tale of regicide. When King Malcolm II of Scotland died in 1034, his last command was that the throne should pass to his oldest grandson, Duncan. -

Stephen Kosmin Year called 2011 [email protected] Stephen Kosmin’s practice extends across financial services law, commercial law, construction law and public law. Stephen has extensive trial and appellate court experience. Recently, Stephen has appeared in the Supreme Court in R (Bancoult) v Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (No 3) acting for the claimant, and in Cox v Ministry of Justice acting for the Government. Stephen is very experienced in financial regulation and financial services law. In particular: Stephen’s expertise encompasses tax avoidance schemes and collective investment schemes, financial product mis-selling, insurance contracts, and jurisdictional issues concerning regulators. Stephen has successfully represented the Financial Ombudsman Service in judicial review proceedings, both substantive and at the permission stage, including in R (Chancery (UK) LLP) v FOS [2015] (the leading case on the jurisdictional limits of the Financial Ombudsman Service), and R (Full Circle) v FOS [2016] (the leading case on the relationship between the FCA and the Financial Ombudsman Service). Stephen has advised the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, including in relation to jurisdiction, quantum, and issues relating to judicial review. Stephen has advised the Bank of England in respect of regulatory investigations and judicial review proceedings. Stephen has both acted for the Serious Fraud Office and for a party under investigation by the Serious Fraud Office. In his commercial and construction law practice, Stephen appears regularly in the High Court both by himself and as junior counsel. In May 2018, Stephen appeared as junior counsel in Seadrill Ghana Operations Ltd v Tullow Ghana Limited, a month-long Commercial Court trial concerning the construction of a force majeure clause in an oil and gas contract upon a suspension of drilling in disputed waters between Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire.
