• Course Code : GEL1011 • CRN : 18285 (Semester 2, 2019/20) • Department : IE (International Education) • Credit Points : 3 cps For year 1 students, this is a Experiential Learning Course For Year 2 students or onwards, this is a Free Elective Course • Medium of Instruction: EMI • Contact Hours: 9 hours for pre-trip meetings in Semester 2, 2019/20 + 10 days overseas tour excluding flying time (05/6/2020 – 16/6/2020) + 3 hours (25/6/2020) post-trip group presentation and evaluation in Summer 2020. • Target students: All UGC and non UGC undergraduates except the final year students. TEACHING AND LEARNING APPROACHES • Students will prepare themselves for the study tour in the following four themes: A. Cultural heritage and national identity B. Oppressors and oppressed - Hitler’s Germany and the Holocaust; C. Armed and ideological conflicts -the Cold War experience and its aftermath and D. Moving forward (building a peaceful society) - reunification for a new European Germany.

• The class will be divided into 4 (colour) groups, each group is responsible to post photo journals of their responsible sessions onto facebook page of this course. This group should work with other groups in related themes that fall into the ‘coloured session’ for necessary information. Other students should comment or share thoughts and observations in the facebook posts when appropriate (see assessment tasks below). The group will need to make appointments with the teacher-in-charge in preparing their proposals, interview questions, debriefing and group presentation. ASSESSMENT

Assessment Tasks Weighting (%)

A. Proposal (hand in by group leader after the second pre-trip meeting before the third one) 20% Students will be divided into four groups. Each group will be responsible for developing a proposal and the following tasks: collect and organize information and present (at the pre-trip sessions) the proposal. This proposal will help them lead briefing and debriefing sessions during the trip on the group-based theme selected. The proposal should include what they might do in two modalities of experiential learning: a. Identified museum or site visits b. Interview with 1-5 local people B. Experience (5/6/2020 – 16/6/2020) in Germany) 40% a. Group based experience (20%). Each group should organize five posts in their theme-based visual journal with captions during the study tour (on their blog or on the study tour Facebook page). b. Individual experience (20%). Each student should comment, add or reflect on the posts mentioned above five times, covering all four themes.

C. Reflection (with multi-media sources) 40% Group (10%) (on 25/6/2020) Group presentation or panel exhibition after the trip on their evaluation and reflection on how far their proposal was completed. Individual (30%) not less than 1200 words, deadline of submission: 27/6/2020 reflection on a. the connections among the historical lessons learned in four themes by the case country and present local and global issues b. share evidence(s) to show how he/she has changed in being a group member in the group and the trip. COURSE REGISTRATION • 12 to 15 October 2019 • Students need to register for this course in October 2019, during the online registration for Semester 2, 2019/20. • The course will have Formal meetings in Semester 2, 2019/20 and will officially starts in Summer 2020. • Student cannot drop this course after enrollment. • The University will pre-assign students to this course in Summer 2020 once they register in Semester 2, 2019/20. (To avoid class overlapping, strongly recommend students not to take other summer courses which will start in June) STUDY TOUR FEE • HK$20,000 (eligible for applying GLEF, max subsidy is HK$10,000) • Students shall pay the tour fee by 5pm 18 October 2019. • The tour fee is non-refundable. • Student needs to pay the tour fee and send the payslip copy to IE General Office Mr Benjamin So ([email protected]) by 5pm, 18 October 2019, otherwise, your will be dropped from this course and your place will be given to the student on the waitlist.
