The papers of Joseph M. Snyder were deposited with the Labor History Archives in Feb. 14, 19 68 by Mr. Snyder.

Joseph M. Snyder was born on March 18, 1915 at Barberton, Ohio. He graduated from the Wilbur Wright High School, Detroit, . Upon his graduation from High School, Snyder continued to broaden his knowledge by taking such courses as chemistry, physics and accounting. He worked first as a mechanic for the Gray Marine Motor Company and later as claims manager for J. T. Doyle.

In 19 42 J. Snyder married Rita Kauthak and is the father of two sons and a daughter.

Before his election in 1960 to the office of Constitutional Delegate from Macomb County, Michigan, J. Snyder worked twelve years as the UAW International Representative of St. Clair Shores District, Michigan; in the capacity of an auditor - eight years, and four years as a negotiator.

Snyder's keen interest in the life of his community and that of the State of Michigan is best shown by the offices he held. They were: Councilman of St. Clair Shores, Macomb County Supervisor, Chairman of the St. Clair Shores Planning Commission, Director Macomb Chapter of the Michigan Society for Mental Health, Chairman of the St. Clair Shores Public Safety Committee, and a Representative to the Michigan House of Representatives for three consecutive terms, in 1962, 1964 and 1966. His position as vice chairman of the conservation committee consummates a long interest in the field. In April, 1967, Snyder was elected chairman of the House Democratic Caucus.

The Joseph M. Snyder Collection covers the period from 19 58 to mid- 1968.

Important subjects are: Michigan Constitutional Convention of 1961-1962. Local Election Campaigns Between the Years 1958 and 1968. 2

He worked first as a mechanic for the Gray Marine Motor Company and later as claims manager for J. T. Doyle.

In 1942 J.

Clair Shores Public Safety Committee, and a Representative to the Michigan House of Representatives for three consecutive terms, in 1962, 1964, and 1966. His position as vice chairman of the conservation committee consummates a long interest in the field. In April, 1967, Snyder was elected chairman of the House Democratic Caucus.
