Hazlett Most readers of American literature think of Malcolm Cowley's Exile's Return: A Literary Odyssey of the 1920s' as the standard insider's literary history of that small group of expatriates who left the American "waste- land" to live in Paris in the 19205. Fewer readers, however, are aware that the first edition, entitled Exile's Return: A Narrative of Ideas', was a good deal more than this; it was also an excellent autobiographical narrative that followed Cowley and his friends on their ideological odyssey from bohemianism to Marxism. Cowley himself is largely responsible for our current neglect of the first edition. In the Prologue to the revised book, he explained that the political opinions he held in 1934 had no place in "a narrative that dealt with the 1920s" (p. 12). But he went on, rather disingenuously, to point out that "while adding new episodes here and there, I have left most of the narrative untouched, out of a feeling that myself in 1934 had as good a right to be heard as myself today; when he went wrong I would rather have others correct him" (p. 12). The revised Prologue leaves the false impression that Cowley merely did away with a few rash political remarks ("There were not many in the book I wrote in 1934"-p. 12), and that the new episodes only expanded upon his original intentions. In fact, the ideological pilgrim- age of the younger Cowley was almost wholly effaced from the 1951 text. In retrospect, one can only assume that Cowley, like many other writers of his generation,' was embarrassed by his decade of Marxist enthusiasm, A candidatefor the degree of doctor of philosophy a1 the University of Iowa. The other notable example is Edmund Wilson, whose American Jitters (1932) was an attempt to combine contemporary national history and personal witness. Wilson's book, - 180 The South Atlantic Quarterlv and that this embarrassment, coupled with a national mood increasingly hostile to communism, had led him to perceive the view of history in Exile's Return as a literary flaw. His fellow-travelling days had already begun to be a Source of irritation in the late thirties when he first considered discarding his Marxist "illusions" (as he reluctantly called them in a letter to Edmund Wilson). In spite of his increasing skepticism, Cowley had defended Russia and Stalin in the pages of the New Republic throughout the thirties, accepting, for example, the Party's explanation of the Moscow Trials and the Spanish Civil War. But he finally broke with the Commu- nists, like many other fellow travellers, shortly after the signing of the Russo-German Pact in 1939. Disillusioned with the Soviet Union and harassed by the House Un- American Activities Committee over a government appointment in 1941, Cowley suffered from a pervasive sense of guilt and resolved to have nothing further to do with anything political. He recalled his mood after leaving Washington: "I felt politically amputated, emasculated, but then I had never been happy among politicians. Now, with a sense of release and opportunity, I could get back to my proper field of interest."?' That resolu- tion appears to have had much to do with the spirit in which he rewrote Exiles Return ten years later. The rationale offered by Cowley for his revisions reveals how political guilt led him to misperceive the real worth of his work. The 1934 edition was not solely about the twenties, as he claimed; it was also about the process by which the ideas and assumptions of the 1930s evolved out of the 1920s. By suppressing the self that had undergone that process and had emerged with a Marxist vision, Cowley seriously marred the coherence of the book. It was possible, of Course, to omit the overtly political conclu- sions to which the narrative led, and so to reduce his "narrative of ideas" to a "literary odyssey." But such editorial surgery, however acceptable it may have made the text for readers in 1951, ignored the very assumptions upon which the story's coherence depended. Moreover, in effacing his earlier political perspective, Cowley took from future readers the oppor- tunity to see how writers during the thirties thought about themselves and their immediate past. When he wrote the first edition, Cowley saw his conversion to Marxism as a representative act. "One man is always representative," Cowley has said. "when he gives honest testimony about what he has felt and observed.'" which was also reissued i.n the .1950s,is drastically altered in the updated The American Earlhquake (1957). and his earlier fellow~travellingself, like Cowley's. is silenced. 4. The Dream of the Colden Mountains: Remembering the 1930s Malcolm Cowlev's Exile's Return 181 Asa result, he created what might be termed a "collective autobiography," one in which the conventional "I" narrator is subordinated as much as possible to a collective "we." In the first edition, this collective narrator is, in fact, used ambiguously. At times, the "we" represented the generation of writers who came of age with Cowley during the twenties, and the story was the narrative of their "odyssey" through that decade; at other times, the "we" is used in a Marxist sense, as when Cowley says that his was the story of "a whole social class" (p. 13). During the twenties and thirties, many memoirists used one or the other of these notions of collective identity-the "generation" and the Marxist "class"<-to reconstruct their historical selves. One may speculate, as in fact most of these writers did themselves, why the collective self had such an appeal. In part, it seemed to express a rebellion against the previous generation's romanticization of the individual ego. It also provided an explanation of the effects of new technologies which were destroying regional identities and creating what historical philosophers such as Jose Ortega y Gasset called the "masses." Cowley himself suggested a number of reasons why members of his generation thought of themselves as a group with a distinct identity, foremost of which was their common dis- illusionment with their elders' rhetoric during the First World War. In Exile's Return, Cowley attempted to combine generationalist and Marxist ideas of identity to reconstruct the story of his representative "we" in spite of the fact that the assumptions of the former, as they were developed by European historians,' were largely incompatible with those of the latter. European generationalists, on the one hand, explained histori- cal change as the result of overlapping cohort groups, whose respective periods of dominance, which were calculated according to the biological rhythms of human reproduction and the stages of the life cycle, were relatively short. Marxists, on the other hand, regarded much longer periods of time, based on the rise and fall of economic systems, as the most important temporal units, and classes as the most crucial social groups. So, in fact, Cowley's ambiguous use of the collective "we" also included an ambiguous temporal framework within which that "we" developed. On the one hand, the narrative covered the fifteen-year period from 1915 to 1930when Cowley's generation came of age. On the other hand, when he stated that his was a story of "a whole social class, how it became aware of Itselfand how it went marching toward the end of an era" (p. 13)7,he was 6. The Great War had destroyed traditional models of heroism for twenties intellectuals such as Ernest Hemingway, Edmund Wilson, Malcolm Cowley, E. E. Cummings, Hart Crane, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and John Dos Passos, compelling them to create a new understanding of what I call the “heroic self.” Through a modernist, experience based, epistemology these writers deemed that the relationship between the heroic individual and the world consisted of a dialectical tension between irony and romance. The ironic interpretation, the view that the world is an antagonistic force out to suppress individual vitality, drove these intellectuals to adopt the Freudian conception of heroism as a revolt against social oppression. The Lost Generation rebelled against these pernicious forces which they believed existed in the forms of militarism, patriotism, progressivism, and absolutism. The

The works of Heming¬ way, Cummings, and others illustrate this, hut for Dos Passos the war became a preoccupation which lasted through most of his writing career. Like many other young novelists, Dos Passos sax^ the war as an ambulance driver. This gave him direct personal experience with war, which he later utilized in his novels. This study examines three xvorks, First Encounter, Three Soldiers, and U.S.A., to show how Dos Passos reworked the materials of (his personal experience each time for a different effect and to a different purpose. First Encounter is a generally direct rendering of Dos Passos’ life as an ambulance driver. The central character, Martin Howe, is a sensitive and thoughtful observer much like the young Dos Passos. He embarks for France and the ambulance corps in search of adventure. During his period at the front he undergoes an initiation experience of uncertain nature, which gives him a more mature view of war. The novel is an immature and unsuccessful work, important only for the introduction of motifs which appear in later Dos Passos novels. In Three Soldiers Dos Passos imposes some sort of form on his material.

    Frontiers: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Study Abroad The Baggage They Carry: Study Abroad and the Construction of “Europe” in the American Mind Michael Woolf CAPA International Education I. Introduction Western Europe has been constructed in the field of education abroad as a “traditional” location: in some sense or another that label is used to suggest that it has a kind of static or dormant significance. In reality, Western Europe is an enormously rich location for study abroad precisely because it is a fluid learning environment that contains and sustains multiple meanings and ambiguities. It is a location that has been represented and constructed by American culture in some key ways over time and what is represented is simultaneously true and untrue. Within that paradox resides a great learning opportunity. The object of this discussion is to explore some of the ways in which Europe has been created and recreated in the American mind and to relate those constructs to the limitations, opportunities and dynamics that may be explored in education abroad. Those constructs represent in part the baggage that students bring with them. In what follows, the structure will recreate the experience of students coming to Europe. The essay explores the baggage they carry; engagement with the European environment and, finally, the process of return. In that structure, which mirrors the experience of the study abroad student, a partial but suggestive set of perspectives emerge that go further than defending the traditional and, instead, present a cogent set of rich realities that collectively create the case for Europe. The contention underlying these arguments is not that students are necessarily aware of these antecedents (they are probably generally not) but rather that these versions of Europe are deeply embedded within the American mind in both popular and “high” culture.

I use the expatriate as a paradigmatic figure of modernism to scrutinize common perceptions of modernist expatriation as a dissociation with tradition and national politics. Instead, this project positions modernism as a movement deeply enmeshed in celebrity culture and the cooptation of foreign spaces. I employ a spatial mode of reading expatriate fiction through which the physical sites of expatriation become symbols of expatriate values and identity in conflict with local cultures. This methodology exposes the exploitation inherent in high modernist expatriation as a practice and challenges popular understandings of modernist expatriation as a liberatory movement.

Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway created some of the most enduring and captivating work to come out of that historical epoch. Even today, the lingering appeal of the “Lost Generation” and the ongoing draw of Fitzgerald and Hemingway solicit questions about the importance of the representations they constructed of American expatriates in their work. This paper presents an interdisciplinary historical critical perspective on the construal and consequence of American expatriation in two of Fitzgerald’s short stories, “The Swimmers” and “One Trip Abroad” and Hemingway’s novel, The Sun Also Rises, by exploring how these works intersect with two autobiographical accounts of the 1920s in Paris, Malcolm Cowley’s Exile’s Return: A Literary Odyssey of the 1920s and Morley Callaghan’s That Summer in Paris: Memories of Tangled Friendships with Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and Some Others. By overlapping these stories with the autobiographical accounts of Cowley and Callaghan, this paper finds that the tension faced by expatriate characters in these stories between the possibilities and perils offered to them through expatriation can be viewed as the outcome of displaced individuals seeking escape from their displacement by entering into an imagined world of expatriates that allows disconnection from reality.

I analyze in particular ‘American Books Abroad’, Cowley’s concluding chapter to Literary History of the United States (1948), and examine his role as guest editor and critic of the Autumn 1953 issue of Perspectives USA, a quarterly launched by James Laughlin of New Directions and funded by the Ford Foundation. The lat- ter aimed to correct a widespread European perception of American cul- ture as imperialist and steeped in mass entertainment, by demonstrating it was at least as highbrow and distinguished as the best of Europe – and an effective beacon of individual freedom against totalitarian communism.

The essay maintains that Burke was prepared to offer to the Communist Party and to all "left-leaning" writers a propaganda strategy, based on what he saw as the potential for cultural transvaluations through politically astute manipulations of artistic form. The essay analyzes Burke's propaganda strategy as an extension--and transformation--of the concept of "form." It also uses the concept as the basis for constructing an account of Burke's reception by the Congress, and ultimately suggests that Burke's speech signals a reconceptualization by Burke of the art of "rhetoric" itself, moving from a primary conceptualization of rhetoric as technique to a primary conceptualization of rhetoric as propaganda (which is itself preliminary to the move toward rhetoric as identification). The paper is in three sections: (1) a historical description of the purposes and nature of the Congress; (2) an exposition of Burke's strategy for revolutionary propaganda; and (3) an assessment of Burke's own strategy in speaking before the Congress and his reception by them in relation to the concepts of "form" and "rhetoric." In each of these novels [The 42nd Parallel and 1919], there are but five persons out of whose experiences the author has chosen to make up his representative picture…. And for the ten principals we are given a much more detailed and consecutive history than for any of the characters in Manhattan Transfer. The sections are in general much longer, and the doings of the character in question are followed from day to day, sometimes from year to year…. The dominant characteristic of all these people is that they are just ordinary Americans, and the prevailing tone of the whole narrative is that of ordinary American speech and feeling. In The 42nd Parallel two of the characters are young men who go from place to place engaging in every variety of unskilled labor. Another is a stenographer coming from an ordinary middle-class family. Her brother, Joe Williams, appears as a leading character in 1919. He is just a boy who can’t stand it at home and who, having deserted from the navy, drifts from job to job on merchant vessels. He has enough initiative and pull to get himself made a petty officer in the merchant marine; but otherwise he is a common sailor… Slightly higher in the social and cultural scale in Daughter, scatter-brained girl from Texas, who is looking for ‘life,’ and is finally killed in a crashing airplane with taking a ride with a drunken French aviator….

At times, Cowley handled the notoriously temperamental writer with all the grace and skill of one of Hemingway’s favorite matadors. Had he not been their target, the verbal feints and tactical blandishments in Cowley’s letters might have impressed the man they were attempting to lull. “Writing too is a dangerous sport like bullfighting,” Cowley once reminded a critic (474), and a letter written to Hemingway heightened that sense of danger. Each one put a strain on Cowley’s epistolary resources. He would later confess that maintaining the correspondence cost him a great deal of effort.
