(The number of entries in the 75th Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race) and five not-for-sale author copies. Edition number of Signed by Richard Bennett Date RICHARD BENNETT OAM 1 PROLOGUE People often tell me how lucky I am to have made a living doing something I love so much. I agree with them. I do love my work. But neither my profession, nor my career, has anything to do with luck. My life, and my mindset, changed forever the day, as a boy, I was taken out to Hartz Mountain. From the summit, I saw a magical landscape that most Tasmanians didn’t know existed. For me, that moment started an obsession with wild places, and a desire to capture the drama they evoke on film. To the west, the magnificent jagged silhouette of Federation Peak dominated the skyline, and to the south, Precipitous Bluff rose sheer for 4000 feet out of the valley. Beyond that lay the south-west coast. I started bushwalking regularly after that, and bought my first camera. In 1965, I attended mountaineering school at Mount Cook on the Tasman Glacier, and in 1969, I was selected to travel to Peru as a member of Australia’s first Andean Expedition. The hardships and successes of the Andean Expedition taught me that I could achieve anything that I wanted.

This year Prescott’s son Lachlan can join the crew. He just missed the cut last year, turning 18 in January – a month too late. The Tasmanian is on his 29th Hobart, and before buying this Farr 40, last raced to Hobart on Shogun in 2012. This boat is Martin and Lisa Hill’s ex ‘Estate Master’, which he purchased in 2018, stiffening it up for offshore and IRC racing. Prescott renamed the boat ‘2 Unlimited’, in deference to his successful Melges 32 and SB20 one-design boats of the same name. • 2015 Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race
2015 ROLEX SYDNEY TO HOBART YACHT RACE REMARKS BY HER EXCELLENCY PROFESSOR THE HONOURABLE KATE WARNER AM GOVERNOR OF TASMANIA HOTEL GRAND CHANCELLOR, FRIDAY 1 JANUARY 2016 Thank you for inviting my husband, Dick, and me to present the trophies for the 2015 Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht race. I was interested to find when researching the topic that the Sydney to Hobart race began in a rather off-the-cuff fashion. During 1945 three members of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia —Jack Earl, Peter Luke and Bert Walker— planned a cruise to Hobart in their respective yachts after Christmas. One evening Captain John Illingworth RN gave a talk to the club members, and afterwards Peter Luke suggested Illingworth might like to join the cruise. Illingworth’s reply was ‘I will, if you make a race of it’.1 Now internationally recognised as one of the three classic blue-water ocean races - the others being the Fastnet Race in the UK and Bermuda Race along the east coast of the US – the Sydney to Hobart never fails to surprise. This year the start was difficult for all involved. The official start boat had to pull out after taking on water and as a result, a hooter rather than the traditional cannon started the fleet on what was to be a tumultuous first day for the race.2 After the chaotic start a southerly buster pummelled the fleet on the first night, forcing many damaged yachts to retire. Almost a quarter of the fleet were affected, including line-honours favourite Wild Oats XI.

  • 2017 Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race
2017 ROLEX SYDNEY TO HOBART YACHT RACE REMARKS BY HER EXCELLENCY PROFESSOR THE HONOURABLE KATE WARNER AC GOVERNOR OF TASMANIA HOTEL GRAND CHANCELLOR, SUNDAY 31 DECEMBER 2017 Thank you for inviting my husband, Dick, and me to the presentation of trophies for the 2017 Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht race. May I begin by paying my respects to the Mouhaneener People, their community, and elders past, present and future, as the original and continuing custodians of the land on which we meet. This is the fourth year that I have attended this ceremony and I must say it is a great privilege. Like so many others, we follow the race with great interest every year from the always spectacular Boxing Day start to the end of the race here in Hobart. The race has changed dramatically since that first cruise which turned into a race between four yachts in 1945. Now, with the 72nd race in 2017, it has for some time been internationally recognised as one of the three classic blue-water ocean races — the others being the Rolex Fastnet Race in the UK and the Newport Bermuda Race along the east coast of the US. And yet, ours remains an egalitarian event at least in the sense that it attracts yachts as small as the 30 footers, such as Maluka and as big as the 100 footers. As usual, on Boxing Day, we watched the always spectacular start on television to see who would be first out of the Heads. This year it was it was Black Jack but behind her it was the manoeuvering between LDV Comanche and Wild Oats XI that caused Comanche to put up the red protest flag.
