The amount of energy received in a certain amount of time is called power. ‣ The electric field is measured in V/m (volts per meter), the power contained within it is proportional to the square of the electric field: 2 P ~ E ‣ The unit of power is the watt (W). For wireless work, the milliwatt (mW) is usually a more convenient unit. 3 Gain and Loss ‣ If the amplitude of an electromagnetic wave increases, its power increases. This increase in power is called a gain. ‣ If the amplitude decreases, its power decreases. This decrease in power is called a loss. ‣ When designing communication links, you try to maximize the gains while minimizing any losses. 4 Intro to dB ‣ Decibels are a relative measurement unit unlike the absolute measurement of milliwatts. ‣ The decibel (dB) is 10 times the decimal logarithm of the ratio between two values of a variable. The calculation of decibels uses a logarithm to allow very large or very small relations to be represented with a conveniently small number. ‣ On the logarithmic scale, the reference cannot be zero because the log of zero does not exist! 5 Why do we use dB? ‣ Power does not fade in a linear manner, but inversely as the square of the distance. -

Ribet Five fundamental operations This talk is about counting, and it’s about solving equations. Counting is a very familiar activity in mathematics. Many universities teach sophomore-level courses on discrete mathematics that turn out to be mostly about counting. For example, we ask our students to find the number of different ways of constituting a bag of a dozen lollipops if there are 5 different flavors. (The answer is 1820, I think.) Kenneth A. Ribet Five fundamental operations Solving equations is even more of a flagship activity for mathematicians. At a mathematics conference at Sundance, Robert Redford told a group of my colleagues “I hope you solve all your equations”! The kind of equations that I like to solve are Diophantine equations. Diophantus of Alexandria (third century AD) was Robert Redford’s kind of mathematician. This “father of algebra” focused on the solution to algebraic equations, especially in contexts where the solutions are constrained to be whole numbers or fractions. Kenneth A. In an algebra or high school class, we might graph this equation in the plane; there’s little challenge. But what if we ask for solutions in integers (i.e., whole numbers)? It is relatively easy to discover the solutions (0; ±1), (−1; 0) and (2; ±3), and Diophantus might have asked if there are any more. -

The fundamental theorem of finite abelian groups expresses any such group as a product of cyclic groups: Theorem. Suppose G is a finite abelian group. Then G is (in a unique way) a direct product of cyclic groups of order pk with p prime. Our first step will be a special case of Cauchy’s Theorem, which we will prove later for arbitrary groups: whenever p |G| then G has an element of order p. Theorem (Cauchy). If G is a finite group, and p |G| is a prime, then G has an element of order p (or, equivalently, a subgroup of order p). ∼ Proof when G is abelian. First note that if |G| is prime, then G = Zp and we are done. In general, we work by induction. If G has no nontrivial proper subgroups, it must be a prime cyclic group, the case we’ve already handled. So we can suppose there is a nontrivial subgroup H smaller than G. Either p |H| or p |G/H|. In the first case, by induction, H has an element of order p which is also order p in G so we’re done. In the second case, if ∼ g + H has order p in G/H then |g + H| |g|, so hgi = Zkp for some k, and then kg ∈ G has order p. Note that we write our abelian groups additively. Definition. Given a prime p, a p-group is a group in which every element has order pk for some k. -

This may result in inconsis- tencies between the descriptions provided by stakeholders. Viewpoints-based approaches have been proposed as a way to manage incomplete and inconsistent models gathered from multiple sources. In this thesis, we propose a category-theoretic framework for the analysis of fuzzy viewpoints. Informally, a fuzzy viewpoint is a graph in which the elements of a lattice are used to specify the amount of knowledge available about the details of nodes and edges. By defining an appropriate notion of morphism between fuzzy viewpoints, we construct categories of fuzzy viewpoints and prove that these categories are (finitely) cocomplete. We then show how colimits can be employed to merge the viewpoints and detect the inconsistencies that arise independent of any particular choice of viewpoint semantics. Taking advantage of the same category-theoretic techniques used in defining fuzzy viewpoints, we will also introduce a more general graph-based formalism that may find applications in other contexts. ii To my mother and father with love and gratitude. Janko’s Sporadic Simple Groups: a bit of history Algebra, Geometry and Computation CARMA, Workshop on Mathematics and Computation Terry Gagen and Don Taylor The University of Sydney 20 June 2015 Fifty years ago: the discovery In January 1965, a surprising announcement was communicated to the international mathematical community. Zvonimir Janko, working as a Research Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Study within the Australian National University had constructed a new sporadic simple group. Before 1965 only five sporadic simple groups were known. They had been discovered almost exactly one hundred years prior (1861 and 1873) by Émile Mathieu but the proof of their simplicity was only obtained in 1900 by G. A. Miller. Finite simple groups: earliest examples É The cyclic groups Zp of prime order and the alternating groups Alt(n) of even permutations of n 5 items were the earliest simple groups to be studied (Gauss,≥ Euler, Abel, etc.) É Evariste Galois knew about PSL(2,p) and wrote about them in his letter to Chevalier in 1832 on the night before the duel. É Camille Jordan (Traité des substitutions et des équations algébriques,1870) wrote about linear groups defined over finite fields of prime order and determined their composition factors. The ‘groupes abéliens’ of Jordan are now called symplectic groups and his ‘groupes hypoabéliens’ are orthogonal groups in characteristic 2. É Émile Mathieu introduced the five groups M11, M12, M22, M23 and M24 in 1861 and 1873. Operations with Algebraic Expressions: Addition and Subtraction of Monomials A monomial is an algebraic expression that consists of one term. Two or more monomials can be added or subtracted only if they are LIKE TERMS. Like terms are terms that have exactly the SAME variables and exponents on those variables. The coefficients on like terms may be different. Example: 7x2y5 and -2x2y5 These are like terms since both terms have the same variables and the same exponents on those variables. 7x2y5 and -2x3y5 These are NOT like terms since the exponents on x are different. Note: the order that the variables are written in does NOT matter. The different variables and the coefficient in a term are multiplied together and the order of multiplication does NOT matter (For example, 2 x 3 gives the same product as 3 x 2). Example: 8a3bc5 is the same term as 8c5a3b. To prove this, evaluate both terms when a = 2, b = 3 and c = 1. 8a3bc5 = 8(2)3(3)(1)5 = 8(8)(3)(1) = 192 8c5a3b = 8(1)5(2)3(3) = 8(1)(8)(3) = 192 As shown, both terms are equal to 192. To add two or more monomials that are like terms, add the coefficients; keep the variables and exponents on the variables the same. To subtract two or more monomials that are like terms, subtract the coefficients; keep the variables and exponents on the variables the same. Addition and Subtraction of Monomials Example 1: Add 9xy2 and −8xy2 9xy2 + (−8xy2) = [9 + (−8)] xy2 Add the coefficients. Keep the variables and exponents = 1xy2 on the variables the same. -

DIHEDRAL GROUPS II KEITH CONRAD We will characterize dihedral groups in terms of generators and relations, and describe the subgroups of Dn, including the normal subgroups. We will also introduce an infinite group that resembles the dihedral groups and has all of them as quotient groups. 1. Abstract characterization of Dn −1 −1 The group Dn has two generators r and s with orders n and 2 such that srs = r . We will show every group with a pair of generators having properties similar to r and s admits a homomorphism onto it from Dn, and is isomorphic to Dn if it has the same size as Dn. Theorem 1.1. Let G be generated by elements x and y where xn = 1 for some n ≥ 3, 2 −1 −1 y = 1, and yxy = x . There is a surjective homomorphism Dn ! G, and if G has order 2n then this homomorphism is an isomorphism. The hypotheses xn = 1 and y2 = 1 do not mean x has order n and y has order 2, but only that their orders divide n and divide 2. For instance, the trivial group has the form hx; yi where xn = 1, y2 = 1, and yxy−1 = x−1 (take x and y to be the identity). Proof. The equation yxy−1 = x−1 implies yxjy−1 = x−j for all j 2 Z (raise both sides to the jth power). Since y2 = 1, we have for all k 2 Z k ykxjy−k = x(−1) j by considering even and odd k separately. CS 70 Discrete Mathematics and Probability Theory Fall 2009 Satish Rao, David Tse Note 5 Modular Arithmetic One way to think of modular arithmetic is that it limits numbers to a predefined range f0;1;:::;N ¡ 1g, and wraps around whenever you try to leave this range — like the hand of a clock (where N = 12) or the days of the week (where N = 7). Example: Calculating the day of the week. Suppose that you have mapped the sequence of days of the week (Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday) to the sequence of numbers (0;1;2;3;4;5;6) so that Sunday is 0, Monday is 1, etc. Suppose that today is Thursday (=4), and you want to calculate what day of the week will be 10 days from now. Intuitively, the answer is the remainder of 4 + 10 = 14 when divided by 7, that is, 0 —Sunday. In fact, it makes little sense to add a number like 10 in this context, you should probably find its remainder modulo 7, namely 3, and then add this to 4, to find 7, which is 0. What if we want to continue this in 10 day jumps? After 5 such jumps, we would have day 4 + 3 ¢ 5 = 19; which gives 5 modulo 7 (Friday). This example shows that in certain circumstances it makes sense to do arithmetic within the confines of a particular number (7 in this example), that is, to do arithmetic by always finding the remainder of each number modulo 7, say, and repeating this for the results, and so on. -

COUNTABLE TORSION-FREE ABELIAN GROUPS By M. O'N. CAMPBELL [Received 27 January 1959.—Read 19 February 1959] Introduction IN this paper we present a new classification of the countable torsion-free abelian groups. Since any abelian group 0 may be regarded as an extension of a periodic group (namely the torsion part of G) by a torsion-free group, and since there exists the well-known complete classification of the count- able periodic abelian groups due to Ulm, it is clear that the classification problem studied here is of great interest. By a group we shall always mean an abelian group, and the additive notation will be employed throughout. It is well known that all the maximal linearly independent sets of elements of a given group are car- dinally equivalent; the corresponding cardinal number is the rank of the group. Derry (2) and Mal'cev (4) have studied the torsion-free groups of finite rank only, and have given classifications of these groups in terms of certain equivalence classes of systems of matrices with £>-adic elements. Szekeres (5) attempted to abolish the finiteness restriction on rank; he extracted certain invariants, but did not derive a complete classification. By a basis of a torsion-free group 0 we mean any maximal linearly independent subset of G. A subgroup generated by a basis of G will be called a basal subgroup or described as basal in G. Thus U is a basal sub- group of G if and only if (i) U is free abelian, and (ii) the factor group G/U is periodic. -

Is this feasible to compute ? If so, how do we compute this value ? 1 Modular arithmetic In mathematics, modular arithmetic is a system of arithmetic for integers, where numbers "wrap around" upon reaching a certain value - the modulus (plural moduli). The modern approach to modular arithmetic was developed by Carl Friedrich Gauss in his book Disquisitiones Arithmeticae, published in 1801. Modular arithmetic is a fascinating aspect of mathematics. The \modulo" operation is often called as the fifth arithmetic operation, and comes after + − ∗ and = . It has use in many practical situations, particu- larly in number theory and cryptology [1] [2]. If x and n are integers, n < x and n =6 0 , the operation \ x mod n " is the remainder we get when n divides x.
