Wikipedia's Economic Value
WIKIPEDIA’S ECONOMIC VALUE Jonathan Band and Jonathan Gerafi policybandwidth In the copyright policy debate, proponents of strong copyright protection tend to be dismissive of the quality of freely available content. In response to counter- examples such as open access scholarly publications and advertising-supported business models (e.g., newspaper websites and the over-the-air television broadcasts viewed by 50 million Americans), the strong copyright proponents center their attack on amateur content. In this narrative, YouTube is for cat videos and Wikipedia is a wildly unreliable source of information. Recent studies, however, indicate that the volunteer-written and -edited Wikipedia is no less reliable than professionally edited encyclopedias such as the Encyclopedia Britannica.1 Moreover, Wikipedia has far broader coverage. Britannica, which discontinued its print edition in 2012 and now appears only online, contains 120,000 articles, all in English. Wikipedia, by contrast, has 4.3 million articles in English and a total of 22 million articles in 285 languages. Wikipedia attracts more than 470 million unique visitors a month who view over 19 billion pages.2 According to Alexa, it is the sixth most visited website in the world.3 Wikipedia, therefore, is a shining example of valuable content created by non- professionals. Is there a way to measure the economic value of this content? Because Wikipedia is created by volunteers, is administered by a non-profit foundation, and is distributed for free, the normal means of measuring value— such as revenue, market capitalization, and book value—do not directly apply. Nonetheless, there are a variety of methods for estimating its value in terms of its market value, its replacement cost, and the value it creates for its users. -
Chapter 4 the Right-Wing Media Enablers of Anti-Islam Propaganda
Chapter 4 The right-wing media enablers of anti-Islam propaganda Spreading anti-Muslim hate in America depends on a well-developed right-wing media echo chamber to amplify a few marginal voices. The think tank misinforma- tion experts and grassroots and religious-right organizations profiled in this report boast a symbiotic relationship with a loosely aligned, ideologically-akin group of right-wing blogs, magazines, radio stations, newspapers, and television news shows to spread their anti-Islam messages and myths. The media outlets, in turn, give members of this network the exposure needed to amplify their message, reach larger audiences, drive fundraising numbers, and grow their membership base. Some well-established conservative media outlets are a key part of this echo cham- ber, mixing coverage of alarmist threats posed by the mere existence of Muslims in America with other news stories. Chief among the media partners are the Fox News empire,1 the influential conservative magazine National Review and its website,2 a host of right-wing radio hosts, The Washington Times newspaper and website,3 and the Christian Broadcasting Network and website.4 They tout Frank Gaffney, David Yerushalmi, Daniel Pipes, Robert Spencer, Steven Emerson, and others as experts, and invite supposedly moderate Muslim and Arabs to endorse bigoted views. In so doing, these media organizations amplify harm- ful, anti-Muslim views to wide audiences. (See box on page 86) In this chapter we profile some of the right-wing media enablers, beginning with the websites, then hate radio, then the television outlets. The websites A network of right-wing websites and blogs are frequently the primary movers of anti-Muslim messages and myths. -

Apple Goldman Sachs Credit Card Future of Branch Banking
Goldman Sachs' partnership with Apple could move it a step closer to being 'a bank branch in your pocket' Dakin Campbell 24h Apple CEO Tim Cook is teaming up with Goldman Sachs. AP AAPL Apple TECH FINANCE POLITICS STRATEGY LIFE ALL 173.90 -0.02 (0.00 %) Disclaimer Get real-time AAPL charts here » Apple and Goldman Sachs are preparing to launch a co-branded credit card later this year, The Wall Street Journal reported last week. The card will be tied to new iPhone features, the newspaper said, leading experts to surmise that this is the computer giant's most aggressive move yet into financial services. By designing the credit card with Goldman Sachs from the ground up, Apple can ensure that the card works as seamlessly as possible within its digital wallet, the experts said. Business Insider spoke with five experts in credit cards, mobile banking, and payments to find out what it would take to make the partnership succeed. Goldman Sachs can't redefine the credit card, but it can go along for the ride as Apple reimagines the digital wallet. That's the consensus of five experts across the spectrum of credit cards, mobile banking, and payments interviewed by Business Insider after The Wall Street Journal reported last week that the companies would this year launch a co-branded credit card designed to sync with an iPhone app. The experts gave informed speculation and said they didn't have any inside knowledge about the product. "There are only two things you can do with a card: spend your own money, and spend the bank's money," said David Robertson, who publishes the industry newsletter The Nilson Report. -
Social Media and the Unyielding Flow of Cable News in the Age of Trump
Social Media and the Unyielding Flow of Cable News in the Age of Trump Deborah L. Jaramillo, Boston University An early observation about television’s daily architecture warrants a reevaluation as new technologies and shifting viewing patterns call into question its relevance. For all the justified criticism, adaptation, and elaboration of Williams’ earliest description of flow, a return to the general concept helps us decode what is happening on cable news in the Trump era. The new routine on cable news generally revels in the sort of disruption instigated by political turmoil, scandal, a renewed investment in investigative reporting, and the decision of cable news producers to include and fixate on Trump’s Twitter feed. Information flow, Twitter flow, and programming flow live together now, sometimes uncomfortably. The key to flow on MSNBC, in particular, is the way that this new living arrangement moves not toward denouement and relaxation at the end of the programming day as broadcast flow does. The blow of each revelation snowballs so that flow is not just a sequence of possibly connected stories from dawn through midnight. I argue that the crux of flow on MSNBC is actually about memory and magnitude—not the resolution of but the accumulation of politically charged information, crises, and catastrophes across the day and, as we are seeing, across all days. Cable news has created a space where continuity, repetition, anticipation, and disruption commingle; the resulting atmosphere is ripe for continuous, live political catastrophe. Cable news relies on the relentless flow of time to frame its usefulness for viewers. -

The Donald Trump-Rupert Murdoch Relationship in the United States
The Donald Trump-Rupert Murdoch relationship in the United States When Donald Trump ran as a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, Rupert Murdoch was reported to be initially opposed to him, so the Wall Street Journal and the New York Post were too.1 However, Roger Ailes and Murdoch fell out because Ailes wanted to give more positive coverage to Trump on Fox News.2 Soon afterwards, however, Fox News turned more negative towards Trump.3 As Trump emerged as the inevitable winner of the race for the nomination, Murdoch’s attitude towards Trump appeared to shift, as did his US news outlets.4 Once Trump became the nominee, he and Rupert Murdoch effectively concluded an alliance of mutual benefit: Murdoch’s news outlets would help get Trump elected, and then Trump would use his powers as president in ways that supported Rupert Murdoch’s interests. An early signal of this coming together was Trump’s public attacks on the AT&T-Time Warner merger, 21st Century Fox having tried but failed to acquire Time Warner previously in 2014. Over the last year and a half, Fox News has been the major TV news supporter of Donald Trump. Its coverage has displayed extreme bias in his favour, offering fawning coverage of his actions and downplaying or rubbishing news stories damaging to him, while also leading attacks against Donald Trump’s opponent in the 2016 presidential election, Hillary Clinton. Ofcom itself ruled that several Sean Hannity programmes in August 2016 were so biased in favour of Donald Trump and against Hillary Clinton that they breached UK impartiality rules.5 During this period, Rupert Murdoch has been CEO of Fox News, in which position he is also 1 See e.g. -
