10 Music concrete beat manifesto Pavement Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (Big Cat)

n Melody Maker last month Steve Malkmus (Pavement's main singer/writer) said, "I'd rather be in a dance club hearing what Kraftwerk predicted twenty years ago". He's hit the nail on the head, when Ithose such as Secret Knowledge and Orbital are putting forward such a strong case for the prohibition of the guitar in today's music. It's a terribly laboured cliche that the only exciting new music around is dance music, but it's hard not to think so with bands like The Voodoo Queens and Cornershop churning out the most skull- crushingly boring dirge of all time. Pavement woke the sleepy scene two years ago with 'Slanted and Enchanted', their strangely twisted songs and heavenly melodies causing many to see them as the most important American band since Sonic Youth or Pixies. Thankfully this album is not the country rock outing that many have talked about. Kicking off with the Van Halen rifting of 'Silence Kit', and Malkmus sounding not unlike Black Francis at times, there's no forgetting the fact that Pavement are a guitar band. His obscure lyrics remain (Malkmus has never been completely on this planet), but thankfully he just about makes sense - most of the time. Over to the second side and the pace lightens up for 'Range Life', all Neil Young circa 1972, but nobody ever said that was a bad thing. Although the album doesn't seem like anything special on first listening, the last two tracks nudge you into realising that you've got it all wrong and that it is, in fact, a gem. The wild guitar onslaught of 'Hit the Plane Down' and the endless swinging groove of 'Fillmore Jive' could find a place in anyone's heart. Next time your judgement becomes a mite obscured by a few bleeps, just slap this on and you'll realise there's nothing quite like the a six string. And hey, even Underworld have a guitarist.
