September/October 2014 at BFI Southbank Al Pacino in Conversation with Salome & Wilde Salome, Jim Jarmusch and Friends, Peter Lorre, Night Will Fall, The Wednesday Play at 50 and Fela Kuti Al Pacino’s Salomé and Wilde Salomé based on Oscar Wilde’s play, will screen at BFI Southbank on Sunday 21 September and followed by a Q&A with Academy Award winner Al Pacino and Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain that will be broadcast live via satellite to cinemas across the UK and Ireland. This unique event will be hosted by Stephen Fry. Jim Jarmusch was one of the key filmmakers involved in the US indie scene that flourished from the mid-70s to the late 90s. He has succeeded in remaining true to the spirit of independence, with films such as Stranger Than Paradise (1984), Dead Man (1995) and, most recently, Only Lovers Left Alive (2013). With the re-release of Down By Law (1986) as a centrepiece for the season, we will also look at films that have inspired Jarmusch A Century of Chinese Cinema: New Directions will celebrate the sexy, provocative and daring work by acclaimed contemporary filmmakers such as Wong Kar-wai, Jia Zhangke, Wang Xiaoshuai and Tsai Ming-liang. These directors built on the innovations of the New Wave era and sparked a renewed global interest in Chinese cinema into the new millennium André Singer’s powerful new documentary Night Will Fall (2014) reveals for the first time the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps and the efforts made by army and newsreel cameramen to document the almost unbelievable scenes encountered there.

An Education Directed by Lone Scherfig Screenplay by Nick Hornby (Based on a memoir by Lynn Barber) Principal Actors: Carey Mulligan + Peter Sarsgaard & Olivia Williams Lone Scherfig’s terrific new film An Education opens in a classroom in an English suburb in the early 60s. The subject under discussion is Charlotte Brontë’s novel Jane Eyre. Written over one hundred years before scene one, Jane Eyre still maintains its curious hold on the female imagination. Must we be forever reminded that Mr. Rochester, “the hero,” locks his first wife up in an attic? A con artist named David (Peter Sarsgaard) seduces an impressionable teenager named Jenny (Carey Mulligan), but after a few semesters in his “University of Life,” Jenny returns to her teacher, Miss Stubbs (Olivia Williams), and Miss Stubbs is the one who provides the final boost required to launch Jenny from her time into our own. Carey Mulligan as “Jenny.” Pen’s Points: ½½ Lone Scherfig’s terrific new film An Education opens in a classroom. The place and time are very specific: we’re in an English suburb in the early 60s. Born right after World War II, these teenage schoolgirls have all grown up with post-Blitz austerity. They don’t know what we know—if they can just hang on, The Beatles, Twiggy, Carnaby Street, and “Swinging London” are all right around the corner. But in the meantime, the most liberated role model on offer is Jane Eyre, a heroine created by novelist Charlotte Brontë over one hundred years before scene one. Jane Eyre is, in fact, the subject under discussion when we first meet “Jenny” (Carey Mulligan) and her severely bespectacled teacher “Miss Stubbs” (Olivia Williams).

Shared Leadership in a Filmmaking Company By Jesper Strandgaard December 2011 Page 1 of 47 Creative Encounters Working Paper # 68 Abstract How can organizations innovate and break with conventions without losing their legitimacy? Organizing for legitimacy (serving tradition and convention) often contrasts organizing for innovation and is often perceived a choice between two evils. This paper suggests that leaders can reconcile the legitimacy-innovation tension by combining and addressing them as two complimentary processes. An ethnographic case study depicts how shared leadership in a highly successful filmmaking company, confronts the legitimacy-innovation tension and, based on a combination of ‘out-of-fashion’ and contra-intuitive actions, their search for new solutions makes them balance between being a rebel or an outlaw. Catrin (Gemma Arterton) is scurrying home through the blitzed streets at dusk. Without warning, she is sideswiped by a bomb blast. Blinking grit from her eyes, she stumbles into a pile of broken bodies. Her initial horror tips into laughter when she realises that they are shop mannequins. Then she notices that one of them is bleeding – a salesgirl lies amid the wreckage of the window display. While the dust and death is still clearing from the air, Catrin vomits from shock, silhouetted in a yawning archway. The scene elegantly combines twin themes in this bracing second world war romance from Lone Scherfig. It captures the savage uncertainty of life during wartime; and, in a nod to the film’s movie industry backdrop, it deftly peels back layers of reality and artifice. Arterton brings a grace and dignity to the role, which suggests reserves of courage in her character that the screenplay only hints at. Catrin left her home in the Welsh valleys for love. Her artist husband Ellis (Jack Huston) specialises in self-important daubs depicting industrial blight. His canvases are a tough sell. Which is why, when Catrin is offered a job at the Ministry of Information’s film division, she jumps at the chance. Swiftly graduating from Mr Cholmondley-Warner-style informationals, she finds herself chipping in with the female angle on a propaganda film about twin girls who filched their father’s boat to help with the evacuation of Dunkirk.
