The project focuses on the effects in Scotland of the development of the new media of film and wireless. It addresses question as to what changes, over the first decades of the twentieth century, these two revolutionary forms of public technology effect on the established entertainment system in Scotland and on the Scottish experience of culture. The study presents a broad view of the cultural scene in Scotland over the period: discusses contemporary politics; considers established and new theatrical activity; examines the development of a film culture; and investigates the expansion of broadcast wireless and its influence on indigenous theatre. -

From his student days he had been an avid book collector. He formed relationships with antiquarian booksellers throughout the north of England. His interests were eclectic but focused on English literature of the 17th and 18th centuries. Several of my father’s books have survived in the present collection. During childhood I paid little attention to his books but in later years I too became a collector. During the war I was evacuated to the Lake District and my school in Keswick incorporated Greta Hall, where Coleridge lived with Robert Southey and his family. So from an early age the Lake Poets were a significant part of my life and a focus of my book collecting. -

T A new version of the Scots Confession, 1560 Ian Hazlett Introduction T In connection with the 450th anniversary of the inception of the public Reformation in Scotland in 1560, some events have taken place. Such occasions tend to be confined to musings on the ‘defining event’ or the iconic personalities, seen through the prism of centuries later. It is less easy to let the voices of the original participants be heard in a way comprehensible to modern ears. For that, one needs to dip into the Kirk’s theological attic, as it were, and bring out some of the original deeds and charters with which the founding fathers justified their beliefs, actions and policies. In 1560, the infant, reformed Church of Scotland was constituted by a trinity of documents on doctrine, church order and ministry, and liturgy – the Confession of Faith, the First Book of Discipline, and the Book of Common Order. These are the foundational documents of the Scottish Reformation as it took shape ecclesiastically. Particularly determinative was the Confession, as it was enshrined in an Act of Parliament (1560, not legitimized until 1567), becoming part of the Scottish constitution that envisaged a new, exclusively Protestant nation. This document will be zoomed in on here, in full, but in an updated linguistic adaptation. The Scottish reforming pioneers as part of a wider European movement must have fashioned something of value and durability, since their legacy still survives in one form or other. It was famously brought back to life by the Confessing Christians in the German Church struggle in the Nazi era.1 Some, however, might quickly point out that several features of the subsequent and modern Church (and Christianity) would be alien and even obnoxious to those Scots, whose ideas were avant-garde in their time. -

The land that gave birth to Burns may well claim the distinction of a separate Re- pository for the Ballads and Songs which belong to it. In this, the First Series, it has been the chief object of the Editor to gather together the older lyrical productions connected with the county, intermixed with a slight sprinkling of the more recent, by way of lightsome variation. The aim of the work is to collect those pieces, ancient and modern, which, scattered throughout various publications, are inaccessible to many readers ; and to glean from, oral recitation the floating relics of a former age that still exist in living remembrance, as well as to supply such in- formation respecting the subject or author as maybe deemed interesting. The songs of Burns—save, perhaps, a few of the more rare—having been already collected in numerous editions, and consequently well known, will form no part of the Repository. In distinguishing the Ballads and Songs of Ayrshire, the Editor has been, and will be, guided by the connec- tion they have with the district, either as to the author or subject ; and now that the First Series is before the public, he trusts that, whatever may be its defects, the credit at least will be given Jiim of aiming, how- ever feebly, at the construction of a lasting monument of the lyrical literature of Ayrshire. -

Newmilns & Greenholm Community Action Plan 2021-2026 Profile 1. Brief Description and History 1.1 Early History Evidence of early habitation can be found across The Valley, with the earliest sites dating from around 2000 BC. To the east of Loudoun Gowf Course, evidence has been found of the existence of a Neolithic stone circle and a Neolithic burial mound lies underneath the approach to the seventh green. A site in Henryton uncovered a Neolith barrow containing stone axes (c. 1500 BC) and a Bronze Age cairn dating from about 1000 BC (the cairn itself contains cists which are thought to have been made by bronze weapons or tools). Following this early period, from around AD 200 evidence exists of not only a Roman camp at Loudoun Hill, but also a Roman road running through The Valley to the coast at Ayr. The camp was uncovered through quarry work taking place south of Loudoun Hill but tragically much of this evidence has been lost. According to local workmen, many of the uncovered remains & artefacts were taken with the rest of the quarried materials to be used in road construction projects. Typically, little is known of The Valley's history during the Dark Ages, but it seems likely that an important battle was fought around AD 575 at the Glen Water. In addition, given the strong strategic importance of Newmilns' position as a suitable fording place and a bottleneck on one of Scotland's main east-west trade routes, it is not unlikely that other battles and skirmishes occurred during this period. -

Reformed Presbyterian Church History: The Commonwealth to the Westminster RPC Restoration of Charles II (1647-1661) September 13, 2009 Monarchy to Commonwealth to Monarchy 1643-1649 Westminster Assembly 1647 The CoS adopted the Westminster Confession of Faith 1648 The Engagement: Scottish nobles agreed to reestablish Charles I. In return, Charles I promised to support the covenants and establish Presbyterianism for 3 years. In July, The CoS General Assembly met to condemn the Engagement. 1648/1649 Charles I was condemned for treason and executed by Oliver Cromwell. Cromwell became the “Protector of the Commonwealth.” His reign between kings was called the Interrregnum. He was a military dictator. He was an independent, and he put an end to the Presbyterian church government in the Church of England. 1649 The “Act of Classes:” excluded “Engagers” from service in either the government or army. This was passed by the Parliament. They would not allow covenant breakers in the government. Scotland was a Christian and Reformed nation; therefore, this religious filter was necessary. Some thought that the Act of Classes was too harsh, and it began a division within the covenanting movement, which ultimately led to the failure of the covenanters. 1650 The “Protectorate:” • After the death of Charles II, Scottish nobles, such as the Marquis of Argyle and James Guthrie, attempted to make Charles II king. They made Charles II publicly renounce Popery and Prelacy, and He had to profess adherence to the Solemn League and Covenant. He lied to Scotland and agreed to these terms. • Oliver Cromwell invaded Scotland and defeated the Scottish army at the Battle of Dunbar. -

DEVELOPMENT DESCRIPTION 1.1 It is proposed to erect a statue of William Wallace commemorating the site’s importance in Scotland’s fight for freedom during the Wars of Independence. The William Wallace Path will allow access to the sculpture. The statue measures 4.75 metres high x 2.25 metres wide. The sculpture is a silhouette of William Wallace framed within a structure of decorative forged metal. 2. RECOMMENDATION 2.1 It is recommended that the application be approved. 3. CONCLUSIONS 3.1 As is indicated at paras 5.2 and 6.2 of the report there are no relevant policies within either the Ayr County Development Plan or the EALP relevant to the determination of this application. 3.2 As is noted in Section 3 of this report there are no adverse consultation responses to this proposal. 3.3 It is considered that the proposal is not detrimental to the surrounding area and contributes positively to the public’s historical awareness of the site. CONTRARY DECISION NOTE Should the Committee agree that the application be refused contrary to the recommendation of the Head of Planning and Building Control, the application will not require to be referred to the Development Services Committee for consideration as it would not be a significant departure from policy. Page 1 of 5 Original Research Calvin and the confessions of the Reformation Author: This article discusses the complicated question of the connection between Calvin and the 1,2 Alasdair I.C. Heron confessions of the Presbyterian Reformed tradition. Firstly, a contrast is drawn to the question Affiliations: of the connection between Luther and the Lutheran confessions. It is noted that here a closed 1Reformed Theology, canon of Lutheran confessions exists, and Luther himself wrote three of the documents. On University of Erlangen- the other hand, there is no closed canon of Reformed confessions. However, there is a broad Nuremberg, Germany consensus concerning which Reformed confessions from the 16th century are classical. In this 2Department of Systematic article a synopsis is provided of this list, and it is discovered that Calvin himself only wrote Theology and Christian one of the classical Reformed confessional documents, although he influenced some others. Ethics, University of Pretoria, South Africa The article then continues to discuss Calvin’s own contribution, his Catechism of 1542/1545. The historical context of writing in which this Catechism is sketched, its use in Geneva is Note: described, and the outline of the Catechism is mentioned. The article continues to discuss why Prof. Dr Alasdair Heron is Professor Emeritus at the Calvin thought there was a need for a catechism, and why he wrote it in Latin and sent it to University of Erlangen- East Friesland. In conclusion the author explains why he has discussed Calvin’s Catechism, Nuremberg, Germany. He instead of focusing on the English Confession of 1556. -
