THE TEST VALLEY SCHOOL (A Specialist School in Maths and Computing) KEY STAGE 4 PUPIL CHOICES BOOKLET 2011 – 2013 2 YEAR NINE CURRICULUM CHOICES 2011 Introduction by Headteacher Test Valley School has a well established and deserved reputation for achieving academic success for all pupils. This success is an indication of the strength of the partnership between staff, parents and pupils. Even so, we are not complacent. We aim to increase the numbers of pupils leaving school with five or more GCSE grades at A* - C as well as providing a number of different curriculum pathways for pupils to follow in order for them to exceed expectations at the end of Year 11 and beyond. Year 9 pupils will make choices over the next few weeks that will inform the curriculum they follow in Years 10 and 11. During this half term parents and pupils will have a number of opportunities to discuss possible choices with subject teachers. We want to ensure pupils are able to make the choices that are right for them, having been given as much support and guidance as possible. It is a period of change and a time when pupils have an opportunity to choose a personal direction as they have some freedom to choose a curriculum pathway to meet their future needs. Pupils are able to select from both academic and vocational subjects, whilst still acquiring a core of general learning and experience that is considered essential to later personal learning and employment. All pupils will continue to follow a broad and balanced curriculum that will lead to nationally recognised qualifications. At the same time they will have some specialist choice by being able to express a preference for what they want to study for the next two years. This booklet has been prepared to help pupils and their parents to explore the practical implications of the courses available. It is to help both parents and pupils think about the future, not only the next two years, but also for later life. There is now an ever-increasing need for pupils to gain skills and qualifications that will prepare them for their future. In an ever-changing world, pupils will need to be able to show great flexibility. Traditional jobs and professions have to adapt to new technologies and skills, while brand new industries are being created at the ‘blink of an eye’. This means that pupils need to be prepared to adapt to these changing situations in what is both a daunting yet exciting time. They will therefore need to be prepared to learn new skills and be prepared to adapt to the changing technologies that will be added to the work place during their lifetime. Pupils will follow the National Curriculum Programmes of Study in: (A) i) COMPULSORY GENERAL EDUCATION FOR ALL PUPILS LEADING TO A NATIONALLY RECOGNISED QUALIFICATION • ENGLISH • MATHEMATICS • SCIENCE • INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY ii) OTHER COMPULSORY SUBJECTS FOR WHICH NO EXAMINATION WILL BE REQUIRED • PHYSICAL EDUCATION • RELIGIOUS EDUCATION • CAREERS AND ENTERPRISE EDUCATION • PERSONAL, SOCIAL AND HEALTH EDUCATION • WORK RELATED LEARNING • CITIZENSHIP 6 (B) ENTITLEMENT SUBJECTS THAT CAN BE SELECTED All pupils will be entitled to select up to 4 subjects from: • A DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY subject • A MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGE • A HUMANITIES subject • An EXPRESSIVE ARTS, PRACTICAL or VOCATIONAL subject SUBJECT CHOICES FROM MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGE HUMANITIES FRENCH CLASSICAL CIVILISATION GERMAN GEOGRAPHY HISTORY RELIGIOUS EDUCATION DESIGN TECHNOLOGY EXPRESSIVE ARTS/PRACTICAL/VOCATIONAL DESIGN TECHNOLOGY - ELECTRONIC PRODUCTS ART and DESIGN DESIGN TECHNOLOGY - FOOD TECHNOLOGY CERTIFICATE IN DIGITAL APPLICATIONS DESIGN TECHNOLOGY - RESISTANT MATERIALS DRAMA TECHNOLOGY ENVIRONMENTAL AND LAND BASED SCIENCE DESIGN TECHNOLOGY - GRAPHIC PRODUCTS HOME ECONOMICS – CHILD DEVELOPMENT DESIGN TECHNOLOGY - TEXTILES TECHNOLOGY FOUNDATION LEVEL COURSES DESIGN TECHNOLOGY - CONSTRUCTION MUSIC PHYSICAL EDUCATION (GCSE) (C) VOCATIONAL CURRICULUM Some pupils will be selected for: • A COURSE AT ANDOVER COLLEGE, SPARSHOLT COLLEGE • A WORK TRAINING PLACEMENT WITH A LOCAL EMPLOYER • A COURSE AT ANOTHER SCHOOL IN ANDOVER It is expected that this opportunity for a vocational pathway will offer our pupils some further choice and coherence as well as a quality of education that will help them to improve their motivation and achievements. The vocational curriculum has been designed to be flexible so enabling some pupils to start vocational subjects earlier should they wish to do so. VOCATIONAL CURRICULUM/ WORK RELATED For pupils who want to select a more vocational curriculum full details of what this involves can be found on pages 51 - 56 of the booklet. Final application forms for college courses at Andover and Sparsholt Colleges or Work Training Placements are available from Mrs T. Briggs. Some pupils will also be taking other nationally recognised qualifications via a College or Andover school course. Public examinations are used by many employers as entry qualifications to a wide range of occupations. Many Colleges require certain examination grades to gain entry onto some courses. The GCSE examinations provide great flexibility in the way that pupils are taught and assessed. However, an organised approach to both classwork and homework is required if pupils are to achieve their best.

    Key Stage 4 Courses 2012-14 January 2012

Key Stage 4 Courses 2012-14 January 2012 Dear Parents and Students This booklet details courses we hope to make available to Year 10 students in September 2012. At the back is a subject options choice form which must be returned to school by Monday 20th February. Between now and then, students will need to consider their choices carefully, gathering as much information as possible through their PD lessons, from their subject teachers, at the Year 9 Parents’ Surgery on Tuesday 17th January and, importantly, at the Year 9 Options Information Evening on Thursday 12th January. They should aim to finalise their choices with their form tutor on the Review Day on Thursday 9th February. In common with all state schools, much of the content of the curriculum is determined by law and the National Curriculum. Consequently, there is a compulsory element (60% of taught time) for all students, which involves the study of English, Mathematics, Science, Religious Education, Physical Education, Information Technology, and Personal Development (Citizenship, Careers, and Personal Social and Health Education). The remaining 40% of the Key Stage 4 curriculum is based on student choice, and is the main thrust of this booklet. We aim to provide choices to ensure that all of our students’ individual needs and strengths are catered for. For this reason we use a Pathway approach, which is explained fully on pages 1 and 2. All courses are certificated by one of the following awarding bodies: AQA (Assessment and Qualifications Alliance) EDEXCEL (Educational Excellence) or OCR (Oxford, Cambridge and RSA). Where possible, each subject description in the booklet is accompanied by information regarding the chosen examination board and specification.
