ASHMANSWORTH is a long scattered village on the North Downs, 8 nriles W. by S. of , and S. by W. of Newbury, and has in its parish 239 souls and 1740 acres of bj]]y land. The Earl of Carnarvon is lord of the manor, but a great part of the soil belongs to the Earl of Portsmouth, the Bishop of , Mrs. Etwall, and a few copyholders. The CHURCH is a smallancientfabric, and the benefice is a curacy annexed to East Woodhay rectory, to which this parish is a chapelry. The tithes were commuted, in 1841, for £371. 3s. 4d. per annum. CRUX-EASTON is a scattered village on the southern side of the North Downs, 7 miles W. by S. of Kjngsclere, and 8 miles S. by W. of Newbury. Its parish contajns 105 souls, and 1072 acres of bj]]y land. William the Conquemr gave it to Oroch, the huntsman, from whom it is supposed to have had the name Oroch or Crux Easton. (See page 37.) Edward Lisle, Esq., who died here in 1722, had twenty children, and published a work entitled, " Observations upon Agriculture." Nine of his daughters constructed here a curious Grotto, which was visited aJJd praised by the poetry of Pope and other writers. One of his sons, Dr. Thos. Lisle, was author of Porsenna, King of Russia, and died rector of Burghcler~, in 1766. :ZH
